Really liking the channel! I have been a tech since 1998 and I love fixing problems! One suggestion I have though is try your best to get people to ditch the old, slow, unreliable buckets of rust and get a solid state drive! THE SINGLE BEST purchase to make a system run faster than new! SSDs are getting to be dirt cheap and some even have 5 year warranties! Just a suggestion

To summarize, do not defrag an SSD The answer is short and simple - do not defrag a solid state drive. At best it won't do anything, at worst it does nothing for your performance and you will use up write cycles. If you have done it a few times, it isn't going to cause you much trouble or harm your SSD

hello, I appreciate the time and effort you've taken to create this clip. I'd add, that a defrag on an older platter style disc is the last thing you should do in the workflow process, after apps, including the helpful ones have been removed for optimization. Moreover there are defragment programs that will allow the most commonly used programs to be placed on the outer edge of the platter disc, speeding up the seek and access times. Giving a faster performance on enterprise used pc, where time is money. One free version example used to be provided by 0&0 Defrag. My understanding is that there is a newer edition for SSD but the use for cell ware, on a modern hard drives, is questionable. Thank you for free advice helping to protect and teach others.

Actually it is recommended to not defrag SSD drives. The seek Time to get to the next chunk of data in a file is not dependent on how "far apart" the chunks of data are, as is the case with a spinning drive. Also writing data to an ssd is what eventually causes the drive to fail

In your opinion how does such a paid subscription software compare to the free software like Avast that you recommend in your videos? Last I used ccleaner for many years and it was a great tool to clean the pc. I heard that with modern windows systems (I use Win11) it is not required. What is your opinion on that?

Correct. Never defrag an SSD. I use Avast free and MalwareBytes Pro and have zero issues. MalwareBytes is definitely worth the money IMO. CCleaner is a useful tool to regularly clean out temp files, but Windows cleanup just a fair job as well, so CCleaner isn't necessary 👍

Fragmentation is NOT number of files fragmented. A few large files likely have many fragments while many more smaller ones likely have none. % fragmentation is ((number of fragments/number of files) -1) *100. The steps should not be run simultaneously on a SLOW PC. Installing a program while defragging the disc will install that program into the sectors freed by CCleaner. Defraggler is a single pass defragger that can't move some files in use. Running multiple disc access programs simultaneously will slow all of them . Manually clean, malware sweep, then defragment, then install. btw, AYCG should explain why he did this all manually and then recommend TRON which will do all but the manual cleaning and anti-malware installation automatically.

Glad you said it - I didn't want to be "That" guy!!! Also... if you have an active internet link... plenty of Live scans for free available from the likes of Kaspersky etc. Use them to establish a bass line, a build from there. If the problem persists pop the drive out and slave it to another PC - now run your scans. And I'm sorry but I am a "Nuke it, its quicker" tech. Yes, I have all the knowledge and experience to do the job properly... but usually... I just wipe and reinstall. Yes, lazy - but 40 years of watching a blue line move will do that to you. Linux for disaster recovery, Fresh install of Windoze for pretty much everything else. Couple of comments below banging on about AVG.... I have used AVG on and off for over 20 years... Honestly - and I'm serious - I don't trust them. Maybe they've changed (I think I read somewhere they were bought out?) But... nah - I've only had problems with them. The only reason I use Avast is because its so easy to switch off (I use lots of... erm... self-sourced.... software that AV systems tend not to like....) Honestly if Windows Defender had a simple "off" switch I use that. I did try programming one... erm... yeah, that was a re-install. I ain't a programmer. Nuh-uh.

G620...2011 to 2013 so 10 years old. Odds are, drive is a rusticle and not an SSD. It is maybe 10 years old as well. With anything that old, I open Computer Management, can check hardware installed, and check logs, especially hardware errors. A 10 year old motherboard may also have bad caps... dried or leaking, a quick look inside for either puffed up capacitors or that whitish sandy stuff on the top of them is a dead giveaway. You may hear the fans going full tilt with the computer just sitting there at the desktop, if the caps are bad, because Intel Speed Step won't work with bad caps not able to regulate the power on the rails so the processor is going full tilt doing nothing. Then you try and run a program and there is no more go juice left because the processor is already full tilt at idle... You can improve the software side, for sure, as it has only 4 gigs ram anything you can stop that doesn't need to be running is a plus, but it's an uphill battle on old hardware.

That is true. Avast has become an up sell nightmare with pop ups and serious privacy concerns. CCleaner is unnecessary junkware as Windows does defragmentation on standard spinning drives just fine without 3rd party software, and is harmful to SSDs. In addition, "registry cleaning" is not only useless when it comes to performance, it is also dangerous. As much as the professional side of our industry has generally panned CCleaner I am surprised this guy is recommending this.

CCleaner was purchased by Avast Antivirus. Chris Titus says that it can "hurt" the registry, but I disagree. I've used it 10,000+ times, never once has it prevented a PC from booting. Ideally, it's best to use for temp cleanup, and yes, disk cleanup does the job just as well

@@AskYourComputerGuy First of all, Avast is a **** company. Worst antivirus out there. Can't tell you how many pc's I've found completely compromised by a host of viruses/malware - and about 88% - had Avast pre-installed, telling them their pc was "safe." Malwarebytes is the way to go - just pay for their pro version/antivirus. Small price to pay to be safe. And...Um.....you seem to be completely unaware of the great Ccleaner scandal. Pro's don't use it anymore. It's lost the trust of the general public. Ccleaner's name = mud. From the wiki: "After Piriform was acquired by Avast, in September 2017, CCleaner 5.33 was compromised by the incorporation into the distributed program of the Floxif trojan horse that could install a backdoor, enabling remote access to 2.27 million[30] machines which had installed CCleaner to be infected.[31][32] Avast insisted that the malware was already in CCleaner version 5.33, prior to the purchase of Piriform. Forty of the infected machines received a second-stage payload that appears to have targeted technology companies Samsung, Sony, Asus, Intel, VMWare, O2, Singtel, Gauselmann, Dyn, Chunghwa and Fujitsu.[33][34] On 13 September, Piriform released CCleaner 5.34 and CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191, without the malicious code.[35] On 21 October 2019, Avast disclosed a second security breach during which attackers tried again to insert malware inside CCleaner releases. That attempt was unsuccessful.[36] " In a nutshell - they took Ccleaner, turned it into spyware/malware - and blamed it on others. (And tried to do it again!)

The 4GB and HDD definitely are the biggest contributors to system speed, no doubt. You can't make a Pinto into a Ferrari, so you have to have realistic expectations. The machine will only go so fast, even with a fresh Windows install on it. Knowing what the end user "used to have" vs what it's currently doing is the biggest difference. Sometimes, even a 10-20% increase is enough for them to be happy. Always helps to know and set realistic expectations

I'm confused as to how this customer's disk got so fragmented, when Windows 7, 10, 11 by default run a defrag every Wed at 1:00am? Did someone disable the Wed defrag job on this system? I'd be very curious as to what it says... if one were to (on this customer system): 1) type "disk defrag" in the Search box 2) run the app which pops up and 3) see what is says under the "Current Status" column for the "Windows (C):" drive. The machines I've checked all say "OK (4% fragmented)". Also, do you ever run a benchmark program (to exercise the CPU or disk I/O) before and after speeding up a customer computer? If so, which benchmark program do you recommend? (I'm looking for one). Thanks in advance.

No idea why auto defrag didn't work. It certainly shouldn't have let it get this bad. I don't normally benchmark my local clients, I just know when it's fixed vs something is still "off". Sometimes I use Cinebench, but mostly when doing reviews, less on determining repair. Clients don't care about numbers, they just want it to work "like it used to" :)

For an average user that just uses a PC for the same 5-6 things and that's it, I would install Avast free AV (Windows Defender is decent as well, and included in Windows). I would also install MalwareBytes Pro (Free version is ok but has to be updated manually). I would probably go ahead and install open office to have a free office utility. Additionally, I would create a Windows USB flash drive for emergency recovery. And some type of cloud back up. I recommend Carbonite. I have a special link for my viewers to Carbonite, if you’re interested. Other than that, whatever else you put on there is really going to be dependent on the type of things that you need the PC for

to my knowledge, TronScript does NOT check for bad sectors. It does run a chkdsk /f which can sometimes indicate hard drive failure, especially if that particular scan takes longer than normal. I have an old system that runs as well as it ever did (well, if it isn't one of the 3-4 times per day that Avast decides to thrash the C drive for 2-3 minutes, and assuming that Opera hasn't eaten up every single last byte of available memory, causing a 5-10 minute disk thrashing session), except for the fact that it's now relative slow to boot, and slow to shutdown. When booting, it loads to the Windows logon screen, but continues to thrash the system drive for an additional 3-4 minutes. When the activity light finally stops flashing, I logon, it loads the desktop and there's an additional 2-3 minutes of disk activity. When shutting down, there's a minute or so of disk activity, then the drive goes silent, although the disk activity light is still lit, but not flashing. It doesn't appear to actually be doing anything. After 30-60 seconds of nothing, there's another flurry of disk activity, and then the power shuts off. Scans don't show any infections, Ccleaner mostly only found outdated references to programs I've run on an external drive, which are no longer there (it missed all the left over registry entries for the 2-3 dozen small Unity games that I ran years ago though). I've tried killing all tasks before shutting down, but it doesn't make any difference. As far as I can tell from Task Manager and Process Explorer, there's nothing strange running in the background. It just goes off into limbo while shutting down. I hate installing anything that requires a reboot because it takes so damn long.

@@AskYourComputerGuy Unfortunately, I can't run SFC because it almost immediately asks me to insert my Windows CD, which I don't have. I bought this computer refurbished and I never got a Windows CD with it. And since every version of Windows has about 50 different editions, I have no idea what one it's looking for. It has Windows XP, Pro, SP3 installed, patched up to the last update that MS put out, and I've tried putting in an XP Pro disc, but it didn't accept that. Granted, it was a modified one, since I've never been able to find anywhere to download a 100% original, unmodified copy, and attempting to buy a copy online is like flipping a coin whether you'll get a legitimate copy or a bootleg. Even then, I'd be buying a copy without even knowing if that one would satisfy SFC. I haven't run chkdsk fully, because I'm somewhat lazy and haven't devoted the time to letting it finish. After running in just check mode, it's at about 3% after like 10-15 minutes. I can be one of those people who will deal with a small inconvenience rather than spending time to try and fix the problem. I'll run it in the near future though.

@@AskYourComputerGuy I ran chkdsk /r today. The first time I tried was right before I went out. It said it would schedule it for next boot, I rebooted, it came up, I took my eyes off it for a couple seconds and the next thing I know, it booted normally. I had to go, so I just shut it down. When I got home, I booted up, ran it, it said it needed to schedule it for next boot, so I rebooted. It took about two hours and when it finished, it said that Windows had made corrections to the drive. Not much has changed though. I restarted just to see if it would shut down any quicker. I guess it was marginally faster. There was a flurry of disk activity, then it went silent with no audible activity, but the light was on solid for 45-60 seconds, then it instantly rebooted without a second flurry of activity, so I guess that's a sort of progress. I noticed that while it was verifying file data (step 4), it would do the same thing: All disk activity seemed to stop for fairly long periods of time, although the activity light would stay on. Note that I'm judging this by the sounds that I can hear the drive making. When I load a program or copy something to/from the drive, I can hear it working. Also, sometimes I'll be doing something like watching a video, or typing a message, and I'll hear the drive start to chatter. 99% of this this is due to Avast. I know this because I'll run Process Monitor and it will just be hundreds of entries of programs from the Avast suite running and accessing various files.
@craigmacdonald4987

I've had muliple systems do exactly this. It seems to be that Avast works fine for 1-3 years, then goes crazy just thrashing disk drives to 100% usage for long periods of time. I tried every remedy. Only thing that worked - every time - has been to delete Avast. This requires going into Safe Mode upon restart, something once easy but now quite hard to do, then you can delete it. I don't like deleting good programs, but Avast seems to have an installation time limit and this fixes the problem.

That's unusual. I've used CCleaner on just about every machine I touch (to be fair, just to clean temo/cache files and tidy up the registry). I've never had any issues with it. Do I trust any of the "extra" features? Nope! But those two features seem to work well for me. Sorry you've had these issues

All that I can say is that I tripled my computer speed by UPGRADING it to Windows 7. I also have AVG antivirus and use "SPYBOT search and destroy" on the computer. I have now had the computer running like this for a few years and no problems. I love that my computer is much much faster than when Windows 10 was on it. I case you don't know I am an A+ certified computer tech.

I trust it to perform disk cleanup, file deletion etc. I don't trust it much beyond that, not because it's spyware, but because it's an "all-in-one" cleaner. They usually aren't worth a hoot in that capacity

There a tool that your can run to cut out 3 or 4 diagnostic tools, called Adware cleaner made Malwarebytes. Also I would to see if had it has SSD if it did not I would upgrade SSD with mirror image from original drive. With the price of SSD and the amount of hours you have to spend working with spinning hard drive. It always come out cheaper on labor and the bill will be lower. Tron would taken 1 or 2 hours to run instead of the 12 hours. The only reason I would keep the spinning drive in that is unit would being converted to Chromebook Flex and drive is less than 5 years old. Different techs do it different way coming up with the same results I like to finish this type of cleanup in less than 2 hours. Microsoft does not change their stance on the qualifications for windows 11 by the year 2025. Microsoft will consider this unit obsolete and unsupported so Chromebook flex will be the only way to keep running after that date, and from the looks of the system, this will be a very good option for that user.

I've used Avast free for years and it also finds and removes malware and viruses off of client systems that run McAfee, Defender, Norton. If it didn't, I'd find a different solution. And CCleaner, regardless of what the other pros say, does do a good job of removing temporary files and folders...all the places that malware likes to hide. I remove it after the cleanup is done.

Assuming you were able to connect to it before, sounds like perhaps some Windows corruption. Run sfc /scannow from a command prompt and see if there is any Windows corruption. After that, research the DISM command to further repair. If that doesn't work, I'd recommend a Windows reset to restore a complete and functional copy of Windows. That will take care of the network wifi issue 👍

if were talking bout slowness - I first make sure all drivers are up to date ... then go on to the next steps.
@AskYourComputerGuy
@AskYourComputerGuy 11 ай бұрын
Always a good idea to update drivers, but I've never found drivers to be the primary suspect for slow computers. Not noticeably anyway. My focus is to always figure out the thing that is causing the biggest speed hurdle and tackle that first, so the repair process doesn't take forever. Then whittle down all the other things (drivers, fragmentation, startup items, etc), until the machine is running right again. There's no set order, but it just makes sense to avoid the bus before avoiding the pedestrian ;)
