When you described the movements of chickens, you jogged a memory. Some time ago, I read that when Elsa Lanchester was getting into character as the Bride of Frankenstein, she modeled her head movements on that of a chicken. I recently saw a clip from the movie, and it was so obvious to me! They are precious little monsters, all of them.

One of these past, hot summer days, I was checking on my chickens making sure they had enough cool water and whatnot. I see my favorite Easter egger, penny, shaking her head and seemed “off.” Sure enough, I go to pick her up and poor thing has a foxtail in her eye! Like, sharp side of the foxtail in her poor eyeball! Luckily my husband was able to pluck it out and she was totally fine but if I hadn’t checked on her, I’m sure it would have lead to an infection and also just looked downright painful! I really feel she has been extra affectionate towards me since then, like she knows we helped her ❤🥰

This is the first video of yours I have seen but I think it's very well made. No rambling on and on about irrelevant nonsense. No kids running around screaming. You didn't make any mistakes and laugh and say "sorry, I'll have to edit that out" and then not edit it out! None of the things I find extremely annoying in most youtubers. Informative and to the point. A+++

Great tips!! 🐔 Not always the case but most of the time I have found, purple comb is more dehydration (possibly from not enough drinking water or diarrhea) and pale comb is most likely nutrient loss possibly from not eating enough or parasites so try dewormer (I put DE on their pellet food first of each month), and or mites giving them dry flaky skin.

Thanks so much Dahlia, your videos and book have helped more than you know! I had a scare with my girl Fiona this past weekend, she collapsed from the heat.. completely freaked me out! I have 3 hens, we’re in Georgia and the temp was around 100 degrees. They were in shade, had a shallow bin with water to cool their feet and ice in the water feeder, gave them cold watermelon hoping to keep them hydrated but I found my poor girl laying on her side with her mouth open. Thankfully I got to her in time, brought her inside to cool down and I’ve been keeping a fan blowing in the run. She’s a little more plump than the others, don’t know if maybe that’s why it happened to her? Her comb and waddle are looking a little pale too so I’m keeping a close eye on my girls. Can’t thank you enough for sharing your chicken wisdom Madam President, you’re the best!!

Clotilde, our Paduana is currently in sick bay because of bright green poop... and molting. We suspect Salmonella, so she has a special diet, thyme, ACV, probiotics, etc. This is the first time we have had this in over three years, so it is trial and error Having chickens you have to recognize their habits, personality, looks, etc. Morning time with them is perfect to just look at them and pinpoint if anything is wrong. Great video.

Thank you. I lost two baby chicks from the hatchery a day apart. They were smaller and less active. I used your slurry last night and the chicky died over night 😞 A week ago dogs in the neighborhood were let loose and killed 3 of my female free range chickens. The sister of one has not been the same since. She is pretending to lay eggs and does not. She hides in the corner of the coop and does not roost. She looks fine and is not droopy. She appears to be depressed.

I'm so sorry you lost so many feathered friends. That is really hard. Pretending to lay eggs seems a bit strange and worth keeping an eye on just in case there is a health condition. Though I absolutely believe she could be mourning. Chickens definitely feel strongly about their friends. There is another flower essence called trauma free by Jackson Galaxy that could be helpful. He has lots of different ones for various behavioral things. Hawthorn berry tea could be good too, it helps hearts that are hurting from loss. Holy Basil and Chamomile might be good options as well. And of course, snuggles and pats, if she likes those.

Thank you, Dalia! I started watching my pullets more closely and noticed that my leghorn, Road Runner, isn’t being picked on but she’s being pushed away from food and treats. I’m giving her a pile away from everyone else, which she does run to, hoping she will gain some size and push back. They were all getting along nicely until the two chicks I promised to a friend went to their forever home. They were leghorns, too. The others are a Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rock, and three Columbia’s Wyandotte. RR isn’t a sweet girl like the others and she defends herself - except at the feeder.

It’s sad that I don’t want anymore animals. Tired of sickness and death. Even dogs and cats, they destroy stuff, and there’s no joy in that. Can ya tell I’ve had enough of what’s going on in the world? I need to get over my hurt from either sick animals or destructive pain in the rear ones.

It sounds like you have endured quite a bit and for that it is ok to be where you are right now- feelings and all. It. Is. Ok. You don’t need to explain anything to anyone. You are certainly not a bad person simply because you may need a short break from animals or even an extended or indefinite break! Just feel. Allow yourself to feel and deal with what you feel as healthily as possible. You are not bad/wrong and neither are the animals. It’s just time for a break (no matter how long).

I started with four beautiful red leghorns. Now in only three years, I’ve lost two of them. I take excellent care of my birds, but when something goes south, I’ve learned the hard way, you’re just gonna lose a chicken. My last bird I lost just a couple of months ago. I had been watching her for a day or two. She was the biggest strongest bird of the three remaining girls. I picked her up to examine her and she immediately began to projectile vomit. All over me and everything else. It would not stop. There was no odor so I ruled out sour crop. After she stopped vomiting, she has a slight gasp to her breathing so I knew she had inhaled her vomit. I didn’t know what to do. She passed within the hour. I’m simply sick of working so hard to keep my girls healthy and then losing them to something I can’t do anything about.

You could try taking her for a long car ride or two. That will usually snap them out of it! Otherwise, if you can put her in a safe place such as a wire-bottom hutch with no nesting material, it may cool her off enough to snap her out of it. Give her food and water and keep her there for a few days. ❤️

I'm a new chicken mom and I lost one of my hens a few weeks ago. She seemed fine the day before but when I came out the next morning to check on them it look like her intestines were coming out her vent and it was bloody. Two other hens were pecking at it and I snatched her up quickly and washed the area off but she died within five minutes in my arms. I cried over that chicken! I'm guessing she had prolapsed vent.😢

He is the only rooster and he is the top leader of our flock. I don't ever see anyone picking on him. I did check his vent area for bugs and did not see anything. I did notice some small raw/bloody areas on his bottom though! Help! I love my Rudy so much and want to help him! Thanks in advance!
