I'm not giving up 😂 even if I'm old. My chicken / duck run caved in from the snow/ice storm here in Kentucky. So I'll be working on fixing that when winter is over! I'm grateful no one was injured ❤ Love what you do💯

We put in a chicken garden on the outside edge of our veggie garden. I grow all sorts of greens, peas, herbs, comfrey, raspberries, and the hens can reach through the fence all during the growing season and pick til they are content. I dry a lot of oregano, and thyme to use during the winter. I also grow garlic for us as well as them. Grow pumpkins, butternut squash, jerusalem artichokes for us and them as well. To save money I started my own meal worm farm for them. I dehydrate them. Egg shells all get washed and baked and crushed and fed back to them. We set up a compost ring in there run to add kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings , wood chips which they love to dig around in it looking for bugs. It creates an amazing compost for us to use in the garden beds.

@@rainbowconnected I also heavily toss in some oats, wheat seeds into the pen run at end of fall to be able to grow in the spring. Have to rake into the soil over tho, cause if I forget and let them out on a sunny day, they will find and eat all the sprouts!

I have noticed the only time that I hear a sneeze, it's because that hen was woofing down some feed ! Sometimes the feed is dustier in that area of the bag, NOT MOLDIER, just settled dust. Lucky them, they do get a room thourghly cleaned out. I do sprinkle some diatomaceous earth in the outdoor pen, when they are not there, just to freshen up the soils. Keeps unwanted pests at bay too.

Love your videos! Thank you for sharing the highs and the lows, ….just the reality of chicken keeping 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m in the UK and last year’s weather extremes brought challenges here too. Garlic, oregano, thyme is my go to for a sneezy chicken, seems to do the trick and was put to the test a number of times last year with my tiny flock of hybrid hens. Leafy greens 🥬 needed here at the minute too, cold snap and snow limits their access to weeds and grass etc. always something to think about and remember to keep our lovely ladies happy and healthy. Thank you for your expertise Dahlia 🙏🏻

About ROOST HEIGHTS. I've heard/read that having the roost height too high can contribute to foot injury or even bumblefoot. If you don't have enough of a distance FROM your roosts to the wall (in another words, let them fly farther and not drop down steeply) it can exacerbate the problem. Some heavier breeds even do better NOT having roosts. And a hug to you, Dahlia. We ALL feel like that sometimes. It's easy to let ourselves get distracted and drift away from our good intentions. It's normal. Just start again when you can. As best you can at the time. It's how we all have to do "life". :)

Yes and too high a roosts could also injure their keels. My ladders are high, 5 ft on top, but they literally hop the ladder and want to be on top, so my man made them so they have to hop down the ladder and not fly off. Of course my big, square body hens barely fly so lol 😂.

Thank you for the advice. About the red mites...I read that First Saturday Lime can be made into a white wash. Since it is supposed to help get rid of mites, do you know if the whitewash would coat the coop enough to stop red mites? I don't have red mites, but I have wondered if washing and then painting the coop would seal all the places mites could hide and thus eliminate them?
@rainbowconnected
@rainbowconnected 8 сағат бұрын
I've heard that white washing can make it harder for mites to take up residence. I think it needs to be refreshed yearly. It would definitely make it easier to spot the little buggers. First Saturday lime is great, but you can buy much cheaper hydrated lime (slaked lime) to make the limewash with.

When we moved into our current home we had the water tested. We were told the water from our well is high in calcium. We have evidence of it in our bathroom on the shower door. Do we still need to be adding calcium just as a precaution, or are there there things we should look out for to determine whether to give extra calcium or not? Also,hello from eastern Washington😊

@@frostrangerofthefrozenrelmI agree! It’s inexpensive, and easy to just keep offering oyster shells anyway. The chickens will only eat what they need (they are not at risk of overdosing on calcium if you just set it out free-choice).

I feed my flock of 7 kalmbach flock raiser pellets and they've been doing great! I personally prefer th3 flock raiser as it has more protein and there's no need to switch if I have mixed ages or birds that take a break from laying. You just need to make sure to provide oyster shell on the side for calcium for birds who are laying
