How to spot manipulated video | The Fact Checker

The Internet is increasingly populated with false and misleading videos - spread by politicians, advocacy groups and others - viewed by millions. The Fact Checker set out to develop a universal language to label misleading online video and hold creators and sharers of this misinformation accountable. Some video is taken out of context; other content is deceptively edited or, in the worst instances, deliberately altered. The first category is missing context. The video is unaltered but it is presented in a way that lacks or misstates the context in which events occurred. Misrepresentation is using incorrect framing of a video that misleads the viewer. Isolation is sharing a brief clip from a longer video, creating a false narrative. The second category is a deceptive edit. This means the video has been edited or re-arranged. Omission is editing out large portions of a video to skew reality. Splicing is editing together different videos to fundamentally change a story. The third category is a malicious transformation. The video has been manipulated to transform the footage itself. Doctoring is altering the frames of a video - cropping, changing speed, using Photoshop, dubbing audio, or adding or deleting visual information to deceive the viewer. Fabrication is using artificial intelligence to make high-quality fake images.
This guide is intended to help all of us navigate this new information landscape and start a necessary conversation. By labeling these types of video, we hope to create an awareness that not all video shared online can be taken as fact. We expect the list will grow as new categories of false video emerge. Online users should show more skepticism before believing that viral video online really happened. On youtube, video clips are posted by some named person or thing, but are obviously videos from legitimate news sources. You have to train yourself to check the name of the submitter before clicking it. Many MSNBC videos may or may not have been altered, but if there was no reason to post it independently of MSNBC, why bother? Whoever posted it had a reason, and that reason does not smack of honesty. So just avoid them. If you see a legitimate video posted by someone else, go to the original site of the legitimate video and look for the video clip there. The internet is extremely helpful most of the time, but we're learning, every day, that it is also a vehicle for the ID of humanity - and the ID is ugly. There are so many dishonest people that they outweigh the ones who just use the web as intended. That's why I've never used social media. It is why I NEVER contract any financial stuff online. It is why ALL my private information is kept on PAPER, not on my PC. Even with all that, and with a good firewall and anti-malware programs, I have been heavily hacked. Everyone's computer has files put on the HD, by the hundreds every few days. There is no way to prevent malicious stuff from being put in your registry, or anywhere else. The only safety from malicious people is to never go online. Or to have two computers, one of which is used online, and the other NEVER. There isn't anything that is beneficial to people which is free from malicious people. There is NOTHING that can make your computer safe from malware. NOTHING. Online, if it seems suspicious, it probably is.

If someone went on Bill Maher or The View on the topic of gun control and said of Parkland "Just because some kid did something at a school..." ,, you think they would be ok with that phrasing, or do you think the guests and audience would go off on them?
