Acrylic paint is quite simple to use once you know how, it dries quickly and you can achieve top quality results by polishing. But you must be warned it is outdated technology these days, it is still a good option for people spraying at home without a spray booth, but I do highly recommend hiring a spray booth if possible and doing it in 2k polyurethane because it is far superior and will not lead to big problems down the track when you do want it done properly.
I will take you right through the entire process from prep to primer, application, gun setup and polishing.
I am not highly experienced in the use of acrylic paint because by the year 2000 when I started my apprenticeship it was well and truly gone from most panel shops but I did have some training at trade school so kick back and see how I succeed in the use of acrylic paint.
Learn how to Spray Paint like a Pro by following this step by step guide to Automotive Refinishing.

A few coats of white Acrylic, taped Candy apple acrylic stripes, then aztec gold acrylic stripes. Worked the body real fine before all that, lol. Then fogged/ light misted a product I just remember as DAU/ Catalyzed Urethane mixed with some gold pearl over the gold stripes, and and then mixed a silver pearl into the DAU for a coat over the entire car. Got out the air brush and high lighted curved edges of the stripes with the silver pearl, OMgoodness. Then Shot 3 coats of catalyzed urethane over the whole of it. Thank you for the time you spend making your amazingly informative, non-caustic videos of the one trade i wish i had spent more of my life doing. Love Your parting comment , its motivational. The 2 part catalyzed clear has protected the base for over 20 years, until a 7.o earth quake sent her nose first into a garage wall. Tiz a small nose bop, but its time to touch that up. thanks again.

I'm a old school painter that started my trade back in the late eighties and your video brings back memories as I haven't done it for over 20 years. WE use to paint mainly 2k but did a lot of jobs in acrylic. I been looking at getting back into the trade but it seems no one wants give me a chance (I can understand why) but watching your video's gets me more excited about it because of how much you enjoy it, Keep up the good work and thanks for the great video's.

Acrylic can be as good as 2 pak with finish but its a long process . We used to put 4 coats on let dry face back then flow coat with 4 more coats not as heavy as it gets a glob look . Acrylic goes on better with suction feed not gravity its atomisation to heavy and you loose gloss 6 weeks down the track . Enjoyed the video good for new to painting.

I paint High end automobiles - Classic's, Muscle cars, antique cars, etc. and I only use Laquer paint and clear coat. The only vehicles I would use 2k on is collision work because it's production work you're on the clock. It's not Laquer isn't as durable as enamels, urethanes, etc. It's how you apply Laquer. 2k and the other paints are very thick and they honestly look like shit but people have the tendency of saying they're more durable because of the thickness. There's cars I've painted 20 years ago that looks like I painted it today. I'll point on a few tips on the correct way to paint Laquer. Take the vehicle down to bare metal and NEVER USE A ORBITAL SANDER! There's none in my shop. Use aircraft remover then remove the remaining paint by hand using a block wet sanding. Any sander penetrates down to the metal surface and into the pores of the metal. These electric Sanders and pneumatic Sanders put marks in the metal and it pulls when thinner hits it or a reducer. Once to bare metal let it cure for a couple of days to release gases. Any light rust sand off, blow off, acetone, blow off, prep sol, blow off, tack rag entire panel or vehicle and primer. I only use red oxide. Put on 6 - 8 coats of primer because you're going to block sand by hand wet sanding the entire car. I let your primer set for 2 weeks before wet sanding. I then repeat this process repriming and let it sit for 1 month then I wet sand with a block and 800 grit paper. The first time on primer I use 600 grit. After the 800 I go over the car again with 1200 grit block wet sanding. I wipe it down, wash it by hand numerous times and I don't start applying paint for another 30 days. I only use 3M imperial sandpaper and get rid of them HVLP paint guns. There's only 1 gun to use when applying Laquer paint and especially doing $25,000.00 - $60,000.00 paint job. Get you a Sharpe 75 model paint gun with a Sharpe 6610 paint cup. If you want to know how I apply the paint, clear and finishing it out. I guarantee a painter can't apply 2k and make it look half as good as my Laquer paint jobs. I paint Laquer to were it looks like it has panels down in the paint ( staged ) and the depth is unbelievable. Always looks very wet and you won't find a blemish nowhere. I've been doing this for 35 years and I know how good I can paint. I've had paint jobs win numerous National awards and I believe in myself as being the elite when it comes to Laquer ( Exquisite Show quality painting .) Sincerely, JES SIMPLY THE BEST CUSTOM PAINTING.

Thank you for the video! Currently working at a museum restoring a 1960 Morris J2 camper van. Going to be spraying it in acrylic/cellulose so this helped a lot! The camper will spend 95% of its life in a heated museum the other 5% will be travelling to local shows so durability isn't a major problem. Just got to finish all the prep work first which is very time consuming and harder than you make it look. Probably got about 30 hours easily into it from mainly rushing it initially and making mistakes! Love the videos!

I used to work as a painter in panel shops in the 1980's when Acrylic was the only thing anyone ever used, and it was piss easy. It was fast, it was cheap, and it was very forgiving. Cars were painted out in the open in rows where they were parked in the paint shop and I can't recall ever painting a car in a booth in those days. In fact a lot of places I worked at didn't even have a booth. It was a very easy refinishing system to use but it had one massive drawback in that because it was colour sanded and buffed to get the high gloss finish it was difficult to match the peely finish on a lot of Euro stuff like Audi's, BMW's and Benz's. A lot of people used to flowcoat the finish which involved knocking back the clear with 1200 and then putting a couple of extra coats over the top that you then buffed when it dried, and while that helped it still wasn't perfect. However once I spent some time working with this old time Italian painter who was a bit of an arrogant prick but *shit* could he paint. He had this unique way to match the finish of any Euro car with Acrylic by wet sanding the primer with 1200 and then applying the colour and clear which was then buffed off the gun which gave a brilliant gloss with a high level of peel that matched the factory finish perfectly. When I first saw him doing it I thought he was a complete dickhead but the end result was the best matched finish I had ever seen and everyone resorted to doing it that way from that time on. Not only did it give an outstanding finish that was better than flowcoating, but it actually saved time as you didn't have to wait for your clear to dry before knocking it back to flowcoat it and then wait for that to dry before you could buff it. Moral of the story is that there is always more than one way to skin a cat, and as stupid as something may initially seem don't knock it until you see the end result :)

You wouldn't know would ya if etch coat can be used as a primer for an acrylic base coat? Or do you need to go over the etch coat with an acrylic primer before the base coat?
@Wardengineering

I always used primer over etch primer, as etch was only ever a bonding agent between bare steel and regular primer.

When all said and done it was still even used in the 70's on Australian Classic's in the factories, but then I am a probably lot older then many posting here I suppose. In those days all we had was spaying enamel for industrial jobs like tractors and acrylic on cars and they survived many years. Everyone talks up 2k but I still see a lot of modern cars with clear breaking down at 12-15 years in the Aussie sun. A good video !

AE paints is what was out when we started painting we added the clear in last coat in the gun it worked well (only solid colors not metallic's) ahhhh the good ole days of A/E., no gravity guns back then all Devilbiss,mix ratio was always 8-4-1 paint/thinner/hardener.and we mix both paint and clear with there own hardeners... then mix equal parts together... basically a single stage mix on last coat. it worked well and looked like clear was painted over base when in fact it wasn't ,owner of shop would charge for full clear coat jobs even tho we didn't do it but most ppl would never know they just liked the shinny paint on their car. no peel with the siphon guns with extended flash times..(45 mins to an hour or more) and slow/med hardeners took longer but saved on buffing . paint was straight out of gun.

Your video was far more informative than most "airbrush" tutorials. I came here for the smaller scale guns, ironically. However, the paint process and application was the same, with some really good explanations as to why things are done the way they are. Like with the wet hand-buffing process; I have sadly ruined a beautiful "galaxy" themed paint job that I did on my Scuf remote, due to dry-buffing an oil paint that took poorly to the top coat. I should have considered wet-buffing when I saw it starting to peel a bit. Your take however, has given me a good set of techniques and ideas for my next coat! Thank you 1000x!!

You are right that you can't use heavy coats with acrylic, light coats with enough time for the reducer to come out between coats or it comes back to bite you later, for a really good finish you can block and build the clear up. I've seen many coats on some of the 'show' car finishes in the 70/80's, blending colour and flake into the first few coats gives you plenty of depth. As you said it's easy to polish, but it also marks and chips just as easily and is bloody near impossible to polish without leaving marks, and yes 'muggins' had a HT ute in the 80's with Black Metal Flake with 26 coats of clear (2 gal. in the old measure), just washing it was a nightmare as you can imagine. The price thing is a bit of a trap, acrylic needs more coats and hides nothing, so where you'd use a couple of litres of 2 pack to do a job, you'll use at least double the amount of acrylic paint (and thinners etc..) it takes 3 times as long to prep to a high enough standard and then paint, and the finish is nowhere near as durable. Unfortunately a restoration is not 'propper' if the paint's not right in some situations, so there is no choice (other than telling them to f_ck off).

Acrylic is suited for my cheap and cheerful situation. I know you don't like to use it but as you said, for someone without much PPE and no room/booth to spray in it's really my only option and will get me by until my next vehicle. Thanks again for all your vids and they're good to watch to see the whole process of a job, start to finish. I started off using acrylic but shops couldn't match the paint, they told me its hard to color match in acrylic, then I went to 2 pack and wow what a difference, people say 2 pack is difficult to spray, 2 pack is easier and the finish is like wow and the color is a perfect match, 2 pack is not expensive when you are buying quality paint.

Great video bro. I greatly agree with you on the Acrylic Clear Coat (Track 22:25). Although I think Acrylic paint for base then a 2K Urethane (Anzahl brand) clear coat on top works wonderfully. I had painted my cousins' car using the technique and strategy, and the car still looks as "Ferrari-Red (Color Number 888)" as it is after almost 3 years now, and still glossy, thanks to 2k Urethane (Anzahl brand) Clear on top of Acrylic base. Although I made sure that the Galvacoat (Zinc-Chromate), Base-Primer and the Base paint under the clear dried totally for almost 3-days before I topped-it with 2k Urethane Clear.

I used to use acrylic lacquer exclusively. Dupont Lucite Acrylic Lacquer. 1970's. We used to use a glaze instead of wax. A popular one was called Ebony Black. It did a great job, but it was also used because I believe Dupont instructions said not to wax for a period of time, I think 30 days. Here in USA terminology, lacquer is cut with "thinner", while enamel is cut with "reducer". Another memory I have is using a Dupont product called something like "Final Finish". That isn't the name but it is close. lol It was a mist coat when you are all done and it melts the surface for a finish that will require less sanding. It would also destroy an entire job if you used to much or were just unlucky. It could shock all the layers below the paint and cause "crazing" (wrinkling). Another memory is that we used different speed thinners depending on what the situation was. Also, a retarder was added sometimes. Again, anything that slowed down dry times was dangerous. The temptation was always present to try and lay down and enamel like glossy flow-out to avoid as much sanding, but that was the devil working on us. lol You got into trouble every time you tried to cheat to avoid sanding acrylic lacquer. Lacquer turned out like a polished jewel but it did not hold up well particularly if you clear coated. Clear coat acrylic lacquer would shrink and crack quickly if put on thick. The modern 2k clears are much better in that regard. I have no yearning to paint another lacquer car. However, I do need to prove to myself that I can paint a car with single-stage metallic acrylic enamel and hardener. It haunts me. lol I must do it as a bucket-list item. I even bough a new old-stock Binks 7. Problem is the authentic acrylic enamel like Dupont Centuri is off the market and those formulas are illegal here do to environmental regulations. The new acrylic enamels spray differently from what I am told. But, that will be how I roll. Thank you for listening to my story, bartender! lol

Thanks for the vid Gun...........but acrylic paint is all I use.........your first coat was way to heavy, this can cause the colour to bleed........best to put a "seal" coat down first. I have painted both of my cars in acrylic clear with a shitty $20 gun! I found it's best to use a 1.5mm needle. The results are the same as your panel...........I found a quick 600 of the panel then 800 to 1200 then finish with 2000 soft back sponge to reduce polishing time. My cars are now 3 to 7 years old and all they require is a quick wash and polish (wax by hand).............I've never had problems with acrylic paint. To bad I can't attach pics. Appreciate your time.

+Andrew Moultrie If you want an easy to buff finish, after you finish the 1200 cut. Wipe spotlessly clean. I get a bit of the mixed paint left in the bottom (about 25 mm from the bottom) of the gun then add acrylic retarder thinners to it till the pots about 3 quarter full. (assuming the old style litre pot). reduce your air pressure to 35/40 on an old style conventional gun then
@clivem6606
@clivem6606 8 жыл бұрын
+Clive M... lay one coat over the entire surface. Comes up nice, even in solid colours. I believe it's more durable than the just cut and buff as the retarder re-wets the surface without creating much orange peel. We used to call it a flow coat on the old duco jobs. Works just the same on acrylic. You don't have to buff your arms off to get a shine back.
@AndrewBitza
@AndrewBitza 8 жыл бұрын
+Clive M Thanks for the tip..........I guess my next question is how do you "blend" acrylic paint into the panel? I used to clear a section then use a thinners coat to blend, but this always gave me a "white" line once polished, have always cleared the total panel.
@clivem6606
@clivem6606 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Moultrie Depends on what you are painting. Where I could I used to try and finish edge to edge but then I had access to tinters. Before they started with the clear coats we just used to paint and buff the metallic. When clears started to come out we used to use blending clear over the next panel then lightly spray out the top coat thinning out as you go if it looked okay then finish with the topcoat clear. For solid colours assuming the match was pretty good just blend it into the next panel wet it out a bit then buff. The problems with the metallics always used to be trying to get the metallic to lay right, you had to fool around with mixing ratios, distance off the job and pressure. Thinned out and low pressure will get you a silvery look the reverse will get you the opposite. The white line you're getting. Was it cold when you were applying, How good was the quality of the thinner. A little retarder in your final coat can make all the difference stops blushing or blooming. The Gunman is right if you want a long lasting durable finish and you can afford it, go with the 2 pack.

I'm a DIY guy........after many years of spraying acrylic clear I have now got it to the point where I can lay 3 full coats (on a hot day) without the need to polish........the shine is still here today.......the white line on the clearcoat was with metallic paint......in the end I just blended to a smaller part of the panel, with regular waxing it could not be seen.......agreed.......I would love to paint my car in 2 Pack..........hey gun, can you put 2 pack clear over an acrylic base?.......some of my friends have done this with success.......as you can put enamel over acrylic but not the other way around.......Love your work!

Ok im a new subscriber and i will have to say you do great videos and i thankyou for all of your teachings please keep them coming we love them. its mesmerizing watching you spray. Love it. But you didn't do this vid and paint justice. I have watched heaps of your vids and finally found one on "acrylic" and thought great thats what im painting my ute in this should be good. Only to find you painting only acrylic clear.... saying that acrylic paint is hard to get..... i went do to the local paint place store and bought acrylic paint the colour i wanted, out of his range of acrylics and he also had the clear for it too..??. So im asking you to do this vid again please but use only acrylic paint, base and clear, like old school. A light coat followed by 2 medium wet coats, let it dry give it a light sand and lay up 2 coats of clear with colour 25-50% 50/50 first coat 25/75 2nd. Than could you do something like that poormans candy 2-3 coats and add an extra 2-3 coats of clear... Sanding between each lay up with 1200 wet always wet... let that dry hard... cut it and buff it and than you find out why you should be recommending it for DYI projects. It easy to use, yes to process is longer but for us guys that dont have a spray booth, it works... Try doing all of this out side in your back yard or in an open shed and compare it to 2pak... please use your super cheap auto compressor, and try spraying with a 1.6 or 1.8mm tip... it would be good to learn how you fix all the thing that can go wrong. Haha. Thanks for your vids sorry for the thumbs down

Im intrested in your paint ratio. Are you adding 50% colour to 50% clear on 1st coat then 25% colour to 75% clear. Thanks
@fionapillage601
@fionapillage601 5 жыл бұрын
@@mattbass_strait6030 yeah the first coat up to 50 50.. it depends on if you need an extra base coat to cover up any sand throughs. I've found the less colour you use and more clear, gives you a candy effect the more coats you give it. Always end with clear coats makes it pop

Thanks for numerous great videos, always something to be learned. I favor lacquer myself being a hobbyist for the obvious reasons, backyard work no booth. Found that after blocking back with 2000, a coat of straight thinners preferably premium as it dries more slowly than GP, will remove the scratches from the sanding so that you end up buffing a scratch free flat finish. Cut back with a foam pad always as mentioned in the video, hand polish and wax, results in a showroom finish. Would love to get into the finer arts of two pack and good guns, but we live within our means.

+Aaron James Sorry but your wrong. They offer Acrylic Enamel for automotive finishes.
@krampus4255
@krampus4255 6 жыл бұрын
+Aaron James You are misinformed. Acrylic simply means that it has a polymer resin. Nothing more. A lacquer dries but is still soluble with its original solvent. An enamel has a chemical reaction and becomes at least far far less soluble. As in the ceramics you refer to which have a chemical reaction at a high temperature, thus the term enamel. This confusion comes from shortening terms and from referring to broad and specific paint types as if they are both specific. It also comes from certain eras being dominated by a paint type so that ,for example Acrylic alkylid enamels became popularly known as enamel or chemically catalyzed acrylic urethane enamel became known as 2k. The funny thing here is guess what ...2k enamel is entirely correct though usually redundant since a catalyst is meant to cause a chemical reaction. In fact technically your modern common "2k" is an acrylic enamel, the specific acrylic being urethane. The Oil enamels you refer to are technically acrylic alkylid enamels which cross-link through oxidation from atmosphere. So again acrylic enamel is entirely correct. However an acrylic enamel can have any base as a carrier. mineral spirits ,water, or whatever just as long as it has a polymer that chemically reacts in some way when curing and doesnt just dry.

Looks good man I sprayed my mates lancer with acrylic clear in the driveway direct sunlight the panels were so hot I could barely touch them it was drying in literal seconds. Was a rolling billboard for dry spray. And we only had 3L for the whole car got 3 coats out of it. he's happy but I am shockingly disappointed!!! your only as good as your last job and I know I'm 100x better than that! If we had somewhere better to spray it. it would of helped alot! But I'm only ever going to use 2k from now on 1 bad experience. . . Never again!!!!

gunmen theres many restoration shops that only use acrylic enamel single stage with the hardener & that can be reduced, also you can put some clear over it, please make a video using " acrylic metallic single stage enamel" & block & prep it like a porsch, also even sanding between coats & baking from the acrylic enamel also with the clear just baking & i can assure you youll be amazed, its way different than plain acrylic using thinner with the hardener..

Thanks for the great nostalgia vid for us old guys. We called it cellulose. I remember this stuff with affection. 12 coats and a buffed shine i've never seen before or since. I understand it has no practical use now but for the ultimate show finish that will never see the light of day I don't think it can be beat. Not criticizing but what's the logic in using wax and grease remover on fresh primer that's just been sanded but not on the original panel that's come in from the world environment. Tx
@TheGunmanChannel
@TheGunmanChannel 8 жыл бұрын
Well I guess my logic is that even if you did get a small silicone hole in primer then its easily fixed with a scuff or dust coat but using Prepsol prior to paint also removes all the dust from the sanding scratches so makes for a clean panel prior to paint, it's how I've always done it and seems to work well. Yes the panel did just come in from outside but sanding into it exposes fresh untouched paint so usually clean enough for primer.

Acrylic Urethane is fairly common in the USA and is generally the most bang for your buck. Epoxy primer Single stage and clear all together average 300- 400 for a gallon of each with the activators,reducer etc. Summit racing eastwood speedkote all have good collors and coverage and decent lasting and protection. Most diyers use them because they look good and last. general Base clear setups generally just for clear and base coat about 5-700 dollars in Us for an equivalent quality and that doestn' include epoxy primer.

I don't mind the concept for a solid colour for a cheap job but found the metallics lacking, not sure how to describe it but they seem flat or dull compared to the lesonal metallic I normally use that really seem to pop out at you, if that makes sense lol. I do really like the concept 2k hs primer though i gave it a go after seeing you use it and it is good gear, never used their 1k primer and never will after seeing how it behaved for you. I think the 1k primer would only be good if you used it as a full acrylic system, primer, base and clear, thats only a guess though.

Love your vids. I still need convincing that I need to go 2k on my 60’s mini. 2k paint jobs don’t look original and too plastic looking to me. I don’t mind the extra polishing work and don’t fancy the cost of transport to and from the booth. Especially if I would be flatting and hand polishing and probably having to touch up in the future anyway? I’ve never hired a paint booth so could you perhaps do a video on the general deal on hiring paint booths, what is included, how long does it take to bake etc etc

Wet and dry a job over in 400 then then primer putty (1-2 coats) using a 2.5 gun, lightly apply a dark guide coat and then wet rub the job in 800, then apply your solid (4-6 coats) or base (2 coats) and top coat clear (4 coats) with a 1.7 wide fan. When dry the job will be wet rubbed back with 1200 then buff with heavy grade cutting compound and finishing with a burnishing cream, end of job. Old school.
