Heed what this man says! I've been a professional auto painter for 35 yrs, and I can tell you, flash time is one of the most important aspects of spraying clear coat. In warm conditions at least 15 min and in cooler temps 1/2 hour. Nice video Pro Spray!

Small tip like 0.8 will prevent you from receiving the proper film build. It will likely produce a dry finish with less gloss and no flow. Start with a 1.2 and move up to a larger tip based on the viscosity of clear you want to apply. Most gun manufacturers ask that you keep the fluid transfer wide open, you can turn in a turn or two if needed, Each tip prefers a different type of clear. Thats why a lot of painters use different tip size. Thin clear like smaller tip, heavy clears need a slightly larger tip. Its not all in the wrist, the gun suppose to apply the finish you want bye itself. Best is to speed up your arm speed keeping in close to the panel and layering or tightening your overlap. Years ago we were always told to make a pass at 50% overlap. You need to try 75% and treat like your layering. Keeping your overlap tighter and increasing your arm speed will lay the clear down flatter, and still produce the needed film build. With the proper tip size you will be in charge, to large and the guns controlling you, Also, move up to a slower activator, it will give you a better finish and gloss. you will receive a better finish without working so hard, or over applying. The minute you over apply, thats when orange peel and runs develope. Hope this helps you!

Hello janiam7, thanks for the shout out. In the video, we used a 1.3 fluid tip. A 1.4 could work as well for slightly warmer temperatures or large panels to paint. The key is, no matter which tip you prefer: 2 complete, closed coats must be applied. I full trigger from start of the panel to end of the panel generally letting off after I complete each pass.
@waynewilliams58023 жыл бұрын
1.4 is ok but warmer weather is better
@rainey23811 жыл бұрын
Greetings. Chris Rainey here. I'm a certified master painter. Loved the video! Great explaination of gun angle and distance. I did however have one concern about your spray technique. I understand that this is a small demonstration panel, but if you were on a real car, spraying from bottom to top in a downdraft booth would not be good. You want your spray to flow with the air circulation. This means start at the top and work your way down.
@mrmuskey52026 жыл бұрын
Flash times are critical, which means depending on the clear Tech sheet. You can’t just put them all into the same basket. Low VOC Clears have shorter flash times. The other non compliant clears may need a longer flash times, Hers a tip, Increase your overlap to 75%, increase your arm speed, the clear lays flatter, with a closer overlap you still receive the film build required, If you try this you will find a flatter surface with a lot less texture.Try to apply the second coat of clear just as the first just starts to tack up. Doing this will allow both coats to become one, they will release solvents better, providing a better finish. Air Flow, Cabin Temperature, Ramp time Tip size are all important. Every booth is different even if its the same make.

I appreciate this video. I was overlapping around 60% but I can see where 75% is better. I also have been about 10" to 12" but I do think I will try going a bit closer next time. I get more orange peel than I appreciate but If I wet it up more then I get runs. I use an Ampro 6025 paint gun and it came stock with a 1.5mm tip. I just ordered a 1.3mm tip and hope it helps a little bit with smoothing my clear. I know my paint gun is crap but it's what I have.
@ascensionmedia.agency6 жыл бұрын
if you get orange peel try wet sanding 1500-3000 ( if you feel you have enough material on there) and then polish it. Also try playing with the Air + or - air pressure plays a big role in a good coat.

So basecoat and clear coat how close to the vehicle should you be spraying at I saw Kevin Teitz on a older Eastwood video said 4 inches from vehicle I see now I have been painting to far from vehicle because I don't get the mirror finish on base clear and primer and after I already saw a video about the distance you should spray from vehicle too. I got to get used to spraying closer to the vehicle and other things like mixing the paint right only started painting since last year in June but not some months out of last year and some out of this year but wanna get a lot better.

@splash59746 жыл бұрын
Rock&Roll Use a good primer sealer... 1 medium wet coat over the entire vehicle. That will get you a good even ground coat to start applying your colour... Also make sure you're applying enough colour to hide anything under it. The sealer evens everything out, so you dont have this problem. I dont always use sealer, but im comfortable not using it, cause i know how much base coat to apply... Just be careful certain colours are worse for hiding. Yellows and greens tend to be very transparent.

sometimes, if it lays down nice and even without imperfections no, but if there is some orange peel or fish eyes.. yeah wetsand with 2000 grit, and if that does not cut it down, move down to 1500 or 1000 at the lowest. Then once it is even and cut, move back up to 2000-3000 and then buff with foam pads

Nice video. Can anyone please explain me the reason for flash of time between coats? What does flash of time affects if its not enough long or too short. I know the coats must chemicly react before they can be recoated itselve, so does it mean that if its too short the final clear might not reach desired hardness? Iam asking this because my sprayed clearcoats are not enough hard so I can even after month make some light marks by pushing the finger nail hard in. Thanks!
@Jzo12710 жыл бұрын
The flash times are required for the clear coat & paint to set. If you don't wait the required time and apply another coat, you will get runs in the paint from the 1st coat not flashing the required time. If your clear coat is not hard it's probably because your not using a 2k clear coat? If you're not using a 2k clear, you will need to apply more coats to build it up.
@cednik10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answer. I use 2k UHS urethane clear without any reducing. Its the most expensive clear from nearby paintshop. Iam sure its enough hard for vehicle paintjobs, but iam a bit confused about use of it on mountain bike frames which are used in rough conditions. When I compare my clearcoat to some of the original manufactured paintjobs theres big difference. Just got some NANO clear with addition of silicon for tryout, which is supposed to be ultra hard. Lets see.

Hi Barry, I'm a rookie sprayer so I'm sorry to all the advanced guys reading this.if it is a stupid question. _____ I have a small area on my vehicle where the CC has peeled off and I'd like to reseal it as best as possible without a major refinish. _____ With a bit of care, and masking during spraying (I was thinking a careful cut-out spaced say 10mm from the surface).and then spraying. _____ I'm wondering if that has a possibility of being to be successful if I light sand and polish after the spray? _____ I'm looking for OK, not "concours d'elegance" standard as it is an older (non-classic) car so I am prepared to have a go, on that basis. _____ It is ugly now and protected paint is better than unprotected - right? _____ If I have success neatly "replacing" the CC, would you then recommend a complete panel Clear Coat? _____ I can probably find out what was used in the repair shop to match product used as closely as possible. _____ I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts and I'm off to view a few more of your vids as I liked this one.

I have an Anest Iwata LPH400 that I have dedicated to clear coat only. I bought the 3M PPS series 2 gun adapter to use with the PPS series 2 system cups so I could reduce clean up time and use less gun cleaner or lacquer thinner. The PPS2 filter clogs instantly while trying to spray clear. I mixed the clear according to mfg. instructions 4/1/1. 4 parts clear 1 part activator and 1 part reducer. I live in FL so I am using the slow activator. When I remove the screen filter in the lid small clumps of clear come out while spraying. I tried to use the Anest Iwata screen with the PPS2 lid with filter screen removed and the PPS 2 pulls the screen into the cup. Do you have any other suggestions other than buying an Anest Iwata Aluninum cup and using their filter? I have invested much money in the 3M PPS 2 cups etc.
