Glad to help! Just remember the smaller 1.5 mm tips are best used on small jobs, as they will not deliver near as much gelcoat as a 2.5. It is also important to thin the gelcoat with styrene, and the clear additive makes a big difference. Thanks for watching!

Here in Thailand, we don't have fancy formulas, we have to make our own lol. I warm food-grade paraffin wax on the stove, add mono styrene, mix it well, and it stabilizes with a long shelf life. Then I add it to the gel coat as a surfacing wax. I have a 2.5-nozzle spray gun, I noticed you didn't want to scare everyone with the pot system gun's price...Yes, acetone is a solvent, not a good thinner, it weakens any product. Mono Styrene is compatible.

Awesome video. Your channel is great because it targets DIYs trying to do things in a professional way. I sprayed my boat hull with a cheap HVLP gun as you described in this video and for the most part it came out great. All gelcoat I sprayed was mixed 50:50 with 904-001 Duratec Clear Hi-Gloss Additive and 1.5% MEKP. The temp was between 75 and 65f during the entire process. Foundation color coat, metal flake coat, and then 3 clear coats. That was yesterday and I ran out of time (and daylight) at the end. Now I'd like to add another 1 or 2 clear coats. Question: Can I wet-sand the (mostly) cured gelcoat with, say 400 and then add another coat or 2 of clear? Same mix, might catalyze to 1.75% this time though. Thoughts? Thanks much!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Ай бұрын
Awesome, it sounds like you're doing a great job! In my experience, gelcoat likes and can take a little more aggressive sandpaper grit in its prep compared to automotive style paints. Not necessarily more than 220 for your application, but you might want to test and see what looks good to you. Just be careful not to sand through your base. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
@matthewgalvin940
@matthewgalvin940 Ай бұрын
@@FishBumpTV Thanks much for the reply!! I ended up machine (DA) sanding it thoroughly with wet 400 and then carefully hand sanded it with wet 240. I feel confident that I got enough "tooth" on the first day's sub-straight to hold the 4 additional coats of clear gel I added. Looks AWESOME with the exception of a little orange peal which was too much to sand out without having to worry about breaking through. You would see it but I bet 90% of people wouldn't. Thanks again for your great content. PS - man I wish I could go fishing with you.... Some of my best life experiences were Florida fishing - both inshore and offshore.

I usually recommend 5 or 6 coats of gelcoat total if you are going to be wetsanding out to a full shine. The total thickness is probably around a 1/16 of an inch or so. That's pretty thick compared to automotive style paints. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!

Thanks for the great video. I've dabbled in gel coat application on my boat, from small nicks with spreaders up to rolling it on when I redid the transom last year. There is a ton of info about HVLP guns on the internet, but most of it seems to be pretty short on technical details. With regard to orifice size, is the biggest difference that you can get heavier coverage/faster deposition rates with a larger orifice (i.e. 2.5mm vs. 1.5mm), or is it that you can get away with thinning it less with the larger orifice? In other words, would 'any' size orifice work if you are patient enough, or is there a minimum size needed before you just can't get it to spray no matter how much you thin it?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! It's kind of both as regards your question. A 2.5 to 3.5 tip is really the standard for larger gelcoat application jobs. The 1.5 like we used in the video will do fine with small jobs if the gelcoat has been thinned properly, but I would go any smaller or you just won't get any material flow. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!

Hey, Joe! Would it be okay to just spray Gelcoat (with wax and the Orca clear additive) by itself on areas where the original Gelcoat is wearing a little “thin”? Or would I need to go through the whole process of several coats of “pure” Gelcoat and then do subsequent coats with wax added? Thanks buddy!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Ай бұрын
If you can see through the gelcoat, or actual fiberglass is exposed, then I would use pure gelcoat, or a 25 percent clear, 75 percent gelcoat mix. Otherwise you could use a 50/50 mix of gelcoat and clear, just remember that 50/50 is the max percentage of clear to gelcoat base. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

@ The fiberglass is not exposed, however in some areas there are little tiny black spots…..almost like little “pin-holes” in a group…..anywhere from the size of your thumb to the size of your hand. I’m assuming that’s the Gelcoat wearing thin in those areas, but I’m not 100% positive on that.

Wax in the gelcoat closes it off from the air so it will fully cure. Its used on exterior coats. You use gelcoat with no wax in a mold since it will be covered by glass and resin that will cure and seal it off from the air.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 3 ай бұрын
Wax additive allows the gelcoat to cure hard and tack free. Without wax or a specialized clear additive, the gelcoat will remain tacky. Tacky gelcoat is fine if you plan on adding more coats or plan on fiberglassing over it, as in a mold. But tacky gelcoat is bad if you are going to try and sand it, or use it in any way. I hope this helps clarify. Thanks for watching

Gelcoat almost always has a texture to it when sprayed. Product like Orca Air dry, and Duratec help it lay down much better than straight gelcoat. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Do you clean the spray gun between gelcoat coats? That gun spray nozzle seems narrow,I was told at least 2.3-2.5mm?I guess hvlp gravity fed is preferred
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 2 ай бұрын
Sometimes you do, and sometimes you don't. It depends on the cure rate and how many coats you plan on applying. Yes, 1.5 mm is on the small side for gelcoat, as I mentioned in the video. But can work fine on smaller jobs with gelcoat that has been thinned. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

So if you were going to redo a 68 24 1/2 foot sleek craft jet boat would you spray it or roll it?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 2 ай бұрын
It could be done either way, but i would lean towards spraying. Just remember that the 1.5 mm tip gun we used in this video is for small areas and touch-ups. You will need a 2.5 mm or larger tip gun for spraying larger areas. I will be testing and new 3m spray gun in the next week or two that should work very well with gelcoat. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

As with most things, it's easier to apply on flat level surfaces. How about applying on near vertical surfaces?

For the bargain conscious .... Harbor Freight sells a very reasonably priced HVLP spray rig that honestly can compete pretty nicely with a $1000 graco. It's obviously not going to last but it's under $125 w/ coupon. And to be fair the air sprayers are as good as they get, but I prefer HVLP for extra fine finishes.

Most can, but it usually needs some kind of thinning if spraying through a small tip spray rig. Thanks for watching!

Hi Captain Joe! Thanks for all the instructions your channel is my favourite!. What technique/process was used to integrate this ultra thin fiberglass laminated solar cells into the hulls of this boat: (check 2:38) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZDCq6yEf555Y9Usi=MFuswIUeC-zSjBCt They seam to be perfectly blended with the body and I would be willlig to make couple of tests with solar cells on my project. Do you think they used clear gel coat on a mold? Any ideas how this can be accomplished?

@FishBumpTV

Yeah, the wax and clear additive will act as the air inhibitor for the gelcoat. The pva is typically used to cure non-waxed gelcoat. Don't be discouraged, though. There is a learning curve when it comes to working with these materials. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@ Yeah, I had gotten used to spraying the PVA on UN-waxed gelcoat and got into a habit of it. Sprayed some PVA (without even thinking) on some WAXED gelcoat and watched my pretty, sprayed gelcoat ruin right before my eyes! Not discouraged….happy to learn. I LOVE this stuff thanks to YOU. 👍

Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! 100 percent, No children in our shop. The shop is also always under lock and key, and we have family on the property to keep an eye on everything. The bottles are also labeled, and usually difficult to reach when I am not using them. Of course, everyone should take safety measures, and don't do or use anything that you feel like is dangerous or unsafe. I'm sorry to hear about your experience, as I do have children of my own, and my heart goes out to anyone experiencing a loss like that!
