I have used a flatting agent with an automotive clear gloss. It is super challenging to apply. Light final coat, if it goes on heavy, cloudy and white. If too light, still shiny. If accidentally pass over the same spot twice, it goes back to gloss. Not sure if I sprayed enough? Now it's glossy again. Did I miss that spot or did it get wetted twice? And the flatting agent separates into firm wax and a runny liquid. Stir a LOT, in the cup, separates again, stir more, too much in the gun or lingering awhile? Separates. First spray is dead flat, more shiny toward the end. Super difficult

I guess it depends on the clear and the flatting agent. I haven’t had that problem thank God but sometimes depending on how many applications you put on the panel it can effect the way the flat clear looks.

Should you wet sand the basecoat if it has some orange peel or would the flat cover it up

It’s always good to sand the base between coats to reduce the amount of dirt and orange peel you get on your final product.

No. What you want to do is apply 2 coats of base coat let it dry properly then sand it and reapply 2 more coats of base coat. The sand scratches have to be covered before you apply clear coat. Check out this video to get an idea 👉kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqCtpmB9pKuliNU

Thanks i watched the video it helped alot thanks one more question tho do you have to wait for the paint to dry completely in between each coat will it and make a difference if you wait for it to dry or not ?

What I like to do is apply 2 coats back to back and then let it dry completely before I start sanding the base coat. Then I apply my two last coats back to back let it dry one more time and then I apply my clear.

If u blend flat clear is it the same process as normal clear Mr J

Yes it is the same process but the only problem with that is you can’t polish flat clear because it becomes shiny once it’s polished.

​@@J.Lulo_hey I'm painting cabinets and I wanna do the same just need advice when I spray glossy it comes out uneven some areas glossy some flat. You think if I spray flat black then sand it then apply clear coat it'll work? Ik it's not for cars but maybe you'd know. Thank you

Iam not sure but that might be because the cabinets are wood, wood might be soaking up the clear and some areas are coming out flat and some are shiny.

Are you painting the cabinets with car paint or are you staining the cabinets with wood stain?

@@J.Lulo_ hey I got it, I was using a sprayer for cars and the sprayer doesn't work with latex paint so I bought one that does. It was spraying so fine that it would dry before it'd hit the cabinets. So I got the right one sprayed it thicker it went good. I do this for living was so annoyed that I had to go on KZbin ask for help lol

Hey dude i applied my flat/matte base coat and was about to start mixing my clear coat but is there a step i need to do to the matte finish before applying the clear? Like sanding or just cleaning using a grease and wax remover?

You can’t sand before you clear because the sand scratches won’t be covered. All you have to do is clear coat it. Iam assuming you’re applying flat clear coat. Just wipe everything down with a tack rag to make sure it’s clean.

Yes I am applying a flat clear. Tack rag? Is that a damp rag with just water? And not use grease and wax remover?

A tack rag is a sticky rag that you use to wipe of and lint or dust that might have fallen on the panels

So without looking at what you’re describing my conclusion would be that there’s some kind of contamination happening with the paint. If there’s any kind of contamination in your airlines or the cars surface or somewhere in the area where you’re painting, this can cause what we call fish eyes. Any kind of contamination can causes fish eyes in the paint.

I see no difference in technique between Matt or high gloss the stupid music doesn’t make it any better
