You really need to put a rust protective primer on the fender before painting! That black paint that they have on it is not very protective!

So I bought a bumper for a Toyota Camry 2017 colour absolute red high gloss. I wet sanded the pre primed bumper using 800grit sand paper. Sprayed on 3 cans of paint and 1 can of clear coat and that's where everything went wrong. It's impossible to replicate high gloss of modern cars and avoid orange peel. So I had to then wet sand the clear coat using 2000 grit and then run machine cutting compound almost wore away the clear coat. Having said that it's now as good as new.

Thanks for posting this, just want your opinion on the primer that comes on the aftermarket parts, is it okay just as it is, or should you sand it off to bare metal and then re-prime the part? Have you ever had problems down the road with the primer that comes on the part? Thanks in advance.

This is a great question. Actually, the aftermarket parts come with a 'E-coat', which is a 'sealer'. You can basecoat right over the top (after roughing up the surface) OR you can prime, then basecoat. Priming is a good idea if you are offering a warranty or want a better outcome. Priming would help to protect against rusting of rockchips, etc.

Hi Matthew, so in general you don't need to 'prep' with a different color paint. However, 2 comments: 1) you should use primer, and the primer color can alter the paint color. The best advice is to use multiple coats. 2) there are a few paints - called tricoats - that the paint 'color' is actually 2 different paints, applied one over the other. these are more expensive paints to purchase and they are generally used on expensive cars like Infiniti & Lexus, etc. Most vendors, including us, in the DIY paint biz don't sell tricoats because we lose money on them...

If you don't use a 2 component clear coat, you have to polish it. If you use a 2 component you might get it right without the polishing step, but will have orange peel just like a factory car.

Our clear coat generally comes out clear if it has the correct amount on and you apply the correct number of coats, it could be that it was applied too lightly and caused it to not gloss, although polishing it is the surefire way to achieve the best shine.

Maybe you have done around 50-75 back and forth hand movements for each coat. But if you have gotten a wide nozzle can like duplicolor, you would have done it with only 10-15 and have saved a lot of spray can.

I have a question, i also do jobs like that in my garage, i live in florida, so lots of humidity, mostbof the time i get cloudy spots after applying the clear coat, so i have to hit it a little with a heat gun, as soon as i apply a little heat to the clear, it shines beautiful. Butbif am not careful i cam also ruin the job, so, how van i fix that humidity problem?

you failed to mention 1k vs 2k paints. you likely used 1k which won't hold up. you didn't sand between coats. result is orange peel and a longevity of 6 months. no thanks.

Yes it was. new panels (and large resprays) should always be pre-primed. Sometimes new panels are pre-primed, and sometimes they only have a rust inhibitor on them - you need to check...

Thanks for vid bro. Going to try that. To repaint my fender they want 200eur. My plan: buy new fender (20eur), get paint can mixed according to color code (10-20eur), buy clear coat can (10-20eur) then paint and replace it myself. Rest of the money goes on good amount of beer and other stuff. Would you suggest to paint other side too? Im planing to cover other side with gravitex coat to prevent from rust.

If you are using something to protect the underside surface, then you should not have to paint it. You might want to paint it for cosmetic reasons if you can see any of the back side...

So i forgot to prime before hand, followed your instruction without knowing that firsthand my fault for not thoroughly researching, but would it be bad now to prime over the paint and clear coat I already used and repeat another paint process ( the color looks good just doesnt have the shine its supposed to or that clear coat enamel that cars have when the sun shines off it) please let me know your ideas my mistake at the beginning any how maybe ill just have to sand it all down to the scratch again im not sure also would I just use a black primer or one that matches the color of my car, it looks as if you didnt mind the primer color because it ended up white

Well... You don't indicate what the condition of the surface was before you painted, but if it seemed solid and you roughed it up before painting (to get the paint to stick), then I would leave everything the way it is. However if you want to fix it & do it right, you have to sand it all down & start over. Regarding the shine of the clearcoat, let it cure for about 30 days & then polish is - it should shine up for you...

I hear you, bad conditions can kill your project because the process of prepping & applying paint & clear is very techincal... If you've clearcoated the paint, you have no choice but to sand it all down & start over. If you haven't cleared it yet, sand it until its smooth, clean it with wax & grease remover or similar & then start again. We give you a directional tip which has an vertical fan for side-to-side hand motion, which makes all the difference for paint & clear application. Use it also on our clearcoat...

This could have been caused by a variety of issues, if primer was not used the color of the material can vary the color drastically. as well as not using clearcoat. please let us know if we can help you!

Actually the fender came pre-primed, and it's always a good idea to scuff- or rough-up the primed surface before applying basecoat (the colored paint). Yes, basecoat was applied on this video, and then clear afterwards to protect. So the rule is you should always be spraying basecoat over the top of a primed surface, and always use clearcoat on top of the basecoat to protect the paint.

You should DEFINITELY paint the fender over the primer. Then clearcoat. Otherwise it will not match. The black color it came with is primer, not paint.
