I love to ebonize ash. I use the Rubio recolor black along with the black oil coat. Last fall I built my sustainer wall out of baltic birch plywood . I edge banded all the faces with ash. The one thing I came across when ebonizing the baltic birch plywood , was the wet popping the grain first was a must do step. I learned the hard way that the black pre color would rain the grain. Makes total sense water based product . So the beauty of the rubi pre color and black oil coat was the fact I was able to knock the raised grain with a very light sanding and some scotch pads that were pretty high grit. These are hanging in my garage shop where I enjoy this hobby. With that said it's been 6 months or so and the black is still looking good no sun fade from when I have the door up. I know Rubio has exterior products but they do not make a black that will ebonize like these two products working together. I have tried using ink to ebonize and it works ok but the ink doesn't spread as well as the Rubio recolor products do. I use the product straight but you can cut it with water to either help with application or to alter the effect you might desire in your project. The one down side to using Rubio on larger projects is your arms are going to get a work out from all the rubbing and buffing .. For large flat surfaces I have a Festool rotax 125 I have some felt pads and I just kind of burnish the surface. One last thing my Festool wall was my vanity project and using Rubio to Finnish a wall system in the garage was an expensive and indulgant exercise . For 15 bucks I could o painted everything black I suppose , But I like the way the oil Finnish looks . Well that was long winded to say if you are looking to ebonize ash is a fantastic stock and the Rubio pre color black is an excellent choice. your results will look amazing and the grain will look amazing for you.. whew !

Thank you. I was looking for the right video to show a true black finish. Im doing a red oak table frame, and I was trying to figure out if I needed a precolor or charcoal finish or both, and you answered my question. Love Rubio products. I dont use any other stains, but theirs ✌️

Sorry if I didn’t understood: you say the very dark black you show on the video is not caused only by the Rubio product?

Awesome video and an amazing finished product! In your application you went right from pre-color to oil plus C2. I just finished my own black pre-color but I scuffed everything down with a white pad in preparation for the application of C2. Was that a bad idea? haha Should i just re-stain it?

Great looking finish! I'm just wrapping up finishing a dining table with OSMO Polyx Oil, really liking how the oil finish makes the character of the wood pop compared to other finishes I've used. Follow-up comment to the one I left on the DIY Filing Cabinet video: the talking speed in this video is perfect. Much easier for me to follow along!

Very thorough and helpful video. I recently used the Rubio Charcoal (without precolor) on Pine, and when applying it with the same nonscratch pads - I noticed darker scuff marks in my piece! It wasn't producing scratches, but somehow the stain penetrated more intensely in scratch patterns due to the pad. It was weird. Maybe it's the Pine. Or maybe my batch of Rubio was bad? It was a little chunky at first - though I stirred it thoroughly.

Also 2 days later, I'm still picking up color when rubbing it with a paper towel!
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 11 ай бұрын
Yeah it will pick up color later because it needs to be completely wiped off after applying. I’m not sure about the scratches though. Pine is pretty soft, so it could be from the scratch pads

@@BevelishCreations Another person suggested that maybe air was introduced into the bottle before opening, causing the stain to prematurely activate. It was in the smaller 100ml bottle, so probably what happened. Getting a fresh one sent and will try again!

If you apply the color black after the precolor it wil be even darker, the charcoal has some silver accents in it.

I’m using it now on my kitchen cabinets. We’ll not the pre color but the the other. Idk if it’s because of the heat here but when I add the accelerator to it it is very sticky and doesn’t give me enough time to colors everything. When I don’t use it, my finish is more matte.
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 11 ай бұрын
Hm that’s interesting. I suggest reaching out to Rubio about it. I didn’t really notice a difference in stickiness with or without the accelerator

So why the charcoal over black instead of the pure? I’m getting ready to finish a solid oak dresser with intense black and then pure but haven’t tried this combo before…. Thanks for the solid vid!
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! That’s a really good question. I think you’re right. In the case of staining with Intense black, it probably doesn’t matter if I used pure or charcoal to finish. It would matter more if I stained using a lighter color

maybe not to relevant to this video. but what do you use to topcoat to get an eggshell finish. not gloss but also not flat?
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations Жыл бұрын
Actually this finish is pretty close to an eggshell finish. I’d say it’s less shiny than satin, but shinier than matte.
