I absolutely love that you shouted out trade schools, because like you said, they will always have a job! And also, I'm LIVING for your ponytail and hoop earrings lol.

carolyn3s I wasn't saying that people who have degrees or pursue careers which require college degrees have to worry about job security. I'm just saying that if you excel at manual labor to be proud of that and realize that the possibilities are endless when you apply yourself. One path isn't better than the other. I'm simply saying that success is accessible to everyone regardless of your educational or economical background.
@popcornlover7228 жыл бұрын
I honestly wish I would've went to a trade school and studied hair or makeup, now a days the oppurtunites are endless. I have a degree, fresh out of college and i'm still applying to jobs because technically I don't have any skills.

I agree with everyone in this comment thread. I grew up in the South (southeast in Georgia) and it sounds to me like the stigma about degrees here is similar to the rest of the country. At my high school, they HEAVILY pushed the narrative that you were a deadbeat who would make no money if you didn't get a 4 year degree. Other options weren't really mentioned or gone into detail about.. It was basically just "Get a 4 year degree or you will be poor and unable to ever find a job".. It made me feel like I had no choice because on top of the school's pressure, there was pressure from my parents as well.. Had I known about all these 2 year and/or technical school options and had I been told that these "other" options were just as respectable and viable as a 4 year degree, I think I would have seriously considered them.. I'm 26 now so I don't know how the schools do it these days but I hope it's been improved. It's no longer a garuntee that a 4 year degree will get you a job... Getting specialized training from a tech school in areas like healthcare, computer programming, mechanical, ect. is more likely to result in a job in the 2010's than a 4 year degree (I should know since I have a 4 year university degree and I'm not unemployed but I do not have the job I want/am qualified for.. I make a piss poor hourly rate and that's not where I wanted to be at in my late 20's)... We need to help kill this negative stigma about trade schools and we need to make sure the information/advice given to high school students is accurate and diverse.. they should know all of their options so they have the chance to take the right path for THEM instead of being forced to take a path they think is their only option... Sorry I got a bit rambl-ey here but this is a really sore subject for me and I have a lot of thoughts about it. Anyone who read my entire, way-too-long comment is awesome and gets a cookie lol

I love that you mentioned how you got into doing hair and were interested at a young age. My dad raised me and sister (twins) by himself and had no idea how to do our hair and I was always made fun of for having crazy hair. Eventually I taught myself and learned that I loved it, and I've been licensed in cosmetology for a year now. You're an inspiration

Wow!!! Every single word that you said (every single one) literally, I felt like I've known you for a very long time. It's like you read my thoughts of my brain. I'm definitely struggling with getting into lvn program and REAL Joy is hair and makeup nails, facials and you totally nailed it. I'm taking a business class to try and open my salon on my own. I'll look into beauty school because you can make 100 in a day which is GREAT. I'm currently working at a hospital as a pca... wipe butts, transfer pts, ambulation, help feed, shower them, take food trays in and out, take out trash, vitals, sanitized equipment basically baby them ALL 20 OF THEM on ur own because nurses are there talking and on the phones and I'm left of picking up their pieces. I dont think nursing is for me. I really want to keep in touch with you. can you email me?

Brittney ! Your drive is so inspirational. I just found you on KZbin about a week ago and I am binge watching all your videos. I admire people who know what they want and work hard to get where they want to be. When I went to college I only went bc my older sis was going and all of my teachers and school counselors said get into healthcare or computers bc that is where all the jobs are and good money. So I went into radiology bc it’s a two year degree etc. well I hate hate hate my career. I dread going to work every day and I don’t enjoy anything about it. I am in my 30s and Radiology was my second degree . I started to think about what do I enjoy doing etc and I do know I love writing and talking so I went into self publishing and I have my second book coming out and a podcast and blogging to be coming soon ! So I’m still figuring it all out. Love your videos Britney !!

Thank you so much for your videos and advices. I learned many tricks from you :) Today I quit my job at a salon, because my boss don't appreciate my work or me as a person. Here in Bosnia hairdressers earn only 30% of their work, and it's a small amount of money on the end of the month. If you want to start your own business you need to have al least 10 grand, and with payment of 260$ you can't get a loan. It's depressing :( but I hope i'll succeed one day. Any way I'll keep watching you and learn more stuff about hair and business :) Kisses and greeting from Bosnia :* :)

Girl, ok. When I was in beauty school we had do to a project for salon ownership and I was like “I’m never going to do this, I don’t have the energy, I have fibromyalgia and hurt all the time ,I can’t handle that, etc.” but I have the same problems you did where I don’t like trusting people with my business. I’m considering.

I quit college and started taking classes for different trades in different areas. Like during winter for example in construction things will be slow so then I can do something else. A lot of people say I should've went to college and gotten a "real job" but I make good money and I'm happy doing it.

Emily'sbeauty there is always going to be something you're great at in the industry starting out.... for me it was blonding.. I told all of my clients I was "the blonde" guy they ended up telling everyone they knew, oh you gotta go see so and so at this salon, "he's the blonde guy" Basically use your strengths and do what you really love and the clients will come to you Tip: bring in the clients you want to have. Bad clients bring in other bad clients

Love you for your honesty! It's sooooo easy to get screwed over especially when you are younger and just becoming an adult . I had my first job as an assistant hairstylist unfortunately I was getting screwed over really bad that I had to quit . Wasn't even making enough money for gas . Getting paid by what you do as an assistant was the worst experience ever :( literally got paid 100 dollars a week when my weekends were 8+ helping the owner . Apparently doing anything on a client only counted as one service complete bs . Washing them twice for a double process counted only as one wash . Bleach and tone was counted as one thing as well . And if I wanted to bring In my own client they would take 60 percent yet we used ion color ? I have nothing against that however I know it's not the best because I've used it before . Left after the 3rd week ! So glad I did I felt like a slave :( . I wasn't really learning anything anyway she still used the cap to do highlights. I'm doing hair at home for now intel I get more experience. Just wanted to share because this happened to me recently in april-June . So glad you are letting people know they have to go do their research because not everyone's intentions are for the best .

I followed that same pattern after high school. I went to community college, hated it, then eventually stopped going. There was nothing i felt passionate about until hair school. I stopped leaving the house and get really depressed. I had to stay working though because I couldn’t get loans or grants to go. It’s weird how we all experience things that are so similar

Thank you so much for talking about trade. I grew up like you, poor and my family worked their way up (except I'm a white girl). I work in construction with my father but did well in school and was accepted to an Ivy League school. Yes, thank you for the trade school shout out! If you're passionate about what you're doing and work hard, you can become the best in your field, if you want to. I hate how people look down on trades, when it's such a practical field and you can make a very good living that way. To everyone out there who looks down on tradespeople, I ask: are you going to start fixing your own cars, septic systems, and wiring? Are you going to start cutting, coloring, and styling your own hair? Then stfu. And yes, you can start your own business as a tradesperson. I've always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to be a business owner or partial owner one day. I just didn't know what I was good at or what I wanted to do, much less how to channel it into some kind of marketable skill. The key is to find something you're passionate about that's also in demand and do it really fucking well. I'm finally starting to figure out what that is for me, at thirty years old. Thank you, Brittney, this video is very inspiring and encouraging. It's my goal to be as independent as you.
