I think the hard part at certain restaurants they keep increasing their automated tip buttons to 18, 20, 25%. Which is expecting a higher tip. Again happy to usually custom and tip 15% at restaurants, but it just feels like they expect you to click those even if they just stand a counter. This tipping this is also coming a big convo in the tattoo industry.

The only person I really have NO problem tipping is my hairdresser. She does a good job and I trust her to mix up color/cut my toddlers' hair (NOT an easy task cutting a 1 year-old boy's hair or a 4-year-old's), and I am fine doing that. It's fast food places that are completely ridiculous. I also hate that so many places (like takeout pizza) ask for the tip BEFORE you receive the service.

I’m originally from the US but live in Japan where the service is impeccable and tipping just is not part of the culture. The price is the price. So glad to leave the tipping culture behind. I think it’s a messed up part of the US culture. Why not just charge what you want to be paid?

We always tip service workers. Always. When l worked and saw my stylist who used to cut my hair l always generously tipped the shampoo girl and her. I appreciated their gentleness with my hair as l’m extremely tender headed. But drive through, picking up an order, bagging my own groceries- the answer is no.😂😂😂

Tipping is insane, I agree. But even minimum wage at like Starbucks isn't actually a livable minimum wage. I don't think it's the consumer's responsibility, however.

My new salon doesnt even ask for a tip. They just have the card on file so im not even given the touchscreen thing that auto asks for a tip. I always feel weird, should i offer to tip? Their prices are low so i dont think they've like built a tip price in.

Very Contradicting. You say you don't even have time to look to see what the tips are or who is tipping....then you say Sugar Mamas and the Bread and Butter Mamas. Be grateful for the tips and don't feel entitled. Have pride in yourself and your talents by treating each customer with high quality service.

I was told by an owner of a business years ago when I tried to tip her that you NEVER tip the owner of a business. She would not accept tips. I always have had that in my head, I even asked friends and family and they all said the same thing. But how do you handle that today? Especially with small businesses like lash techs, or even hair stylist where they might work alone in a suite so technically they are the business owner. I would feel weird not tipping them, do they expect to get tipped? Is the not tipping an owner of a business not a thing anymore??

I believe those who have to pay rent for a booth should get a tip, but for a business owner to ask for it really shows low class. And the tipper decides the amount period and they should not be treated less than or more than depending on the amount given.

Here's the thing, if you don't want to tip then don't! Servers turn the screen your way and say "it'll ask you a couple questions" so that you can click no tip without them seeing and so you don't feel pressured! Tip jars are nice but they get stolen pretty frequently and a lot of the time people who want to tip don't have cash! Also coffee shops have started advertising jobs with tips included in the pay. They'll say $18/hr but it's actually $15/hr and the extra $3 is if you get tips which sucks

I’m a server in PA. I make $2.83 an hour technically, however I never actually see those paychecks because of taxes. I have to tip out the hostess/busser .025% of my SALES and the bartender .005% So, if I have table come in and they don’t tip me, I’m actually losing money serving that table because I still owe the hostess and bartender regardless. Some nights my tip out to the hostess is over $40. In most restaurants the servers have to tip out the hosts and bartenders at the end of the night. It’s not special to the restaurant I work at. It’s so that the restaurant itself can pay the hostess less per hour and the servers provide the rest of the hostess wage.

People are lacking DISCERNMENT. Professional service providers and servers deserve gratuity/tip 💯 for good service and it’s okay to not patron services if you can’t afford the fees and to tip. I think it’s sort of childish to complain about how expensive things have gotten when ultimately it’s a choice people get to make on how to spend their money. I agree tipping has gotten out of control when it comes to non professional services…any place where you need to order at a counter and then pick up your food at said counter is not getting a tip from me personally but I rarely even patron those kinds of places and I don’t spend money on things I can do for myself like DoorDash and Uber eats.

A lot of time, tipping is not necessary. I absolutely believe that we should tip servers in America because they only make their money on tips. I also tip people who service certain jobs like hair, nails, etc. IF they don't own their own business because I know that they are working for someone who sets their pay for them. But I also have services done by people who own their own business and I expect them to price their services as they need to and I trust that they are not relying on tips. I tip sometimes but I don't feel that there should be pressure there because they are setting their own prices. I hope that makes sense. But yes, this is a very American problem.

Yeah tipping culture has been way out of hand for some time now. I think tipping should just be reserved for waiters/waitresses, hair salons/nail salons, etc but anything else is overkill. Why am i tipping at a drive through or order pick up? They're doing their bare minimum! i refuse to tip for anything less.

I live in Europe and yes in my country ppl tip the usual suspects- waiters, taxi drivers, hairdressers, but only about 2-10 Euros. And I would never tip where I don't sit down and get actual service. I don't tip a person for actually following their basic job description. Also I noticed on videos that a lot of ppl get more in tips a day than I make at my job in 3 days- so no, I won't get bullied out of my hard earned money 😂

I think if anyone is working somewhere that they rely on tips or are going to have an attitude when they don't get one then consider working somewhere else. I worked in restaurants when I was young, I relied on tips. But no one HAS to do anything. They have to pay the bill for their food, that's it. It's the entitlement that is a big reason people are done with tipping. A lot of these establishments get away with paying their workers pennies and the customers are paying their "salary". I mean essentially everyone working is doing a service, I think them paying should suffice. When I worked in service, I did well, if I didn't then I wouldn't do it, I had a lot of bills. I've also worked restaurants that were slow and left. This complaining thing everyone does today is so annoying. These services where people pay a couple hundred dollars and then a tip, I think the consumers are trying to say maybe the price should decrease if I have to tip. And for people saying well then don't go get a service, well the same could be said about the person doing the service, work somewhere else. Personally, I don't get services done and my husband and I are picky and I cook every night. I like it and I know it'll taste good. Another interesting topic is the amount of money people spend on frivolous things and then complain they don't have money. Or that people in the past were able to save more, yea because they didn't have sixty pairs of shoes/go drinking every weekend/get their lashes done/ect. If you like your money, stay home.

So here’s my issue with tipping. I think there is a difference between servers and hair stylists and barbers. Servers don’t set their own prices. They literally cannot survive on wages alone. However, other service providers make their own prices. I’m already being charged the price you decided was enough for the service. So why do I have to tip?? Now, I follow this up with I have had the same hair stylist in Houston since I moved here 4 years ago. Love my girl and I tip her WELL! But still sometimes I do feel like why? And right now funds are tight and my hair always turns out great when I do it myself.

You do not have to tip, but it is nice that you do, everything has gone up even products for the salon. Not to mention overhead and if they are on commission they do not get all their money. I’m in the hair industry and it’s nice to get tipped.

And also here's my two cents. As a hairdresser over 22 years the last 3. The price of Professional Hair color has not doubled but Trippeled plus a few dollars more...That's just color.... Don't forget, peroxide, foils, bleach, Professional Insurance, the light bill the electric the garbage . And also don't forget the taxes..😢 everything is super expensive now for everybody let's just all pick and choose your battles

Yes its absolutely out of hand. I stopped tipping at drive thrus, when i do my own food pick ups and coffee places. Especially when they arent even nice when i would show up to get my stuff. And before i quit tipping, they didnt even acknowledge the tip itself! No smile or thank you. It was just expected and it felt so gross. They hardly even say goodbye to you anymore. So i stopped tipping them and feel a hell of a lot better about it. (I was a waitress for 3+ years and have done hair for 13 years. Everything i charge goes into my pocket so if im not tipped, oh well doesnt hurt too bad. Youre right about those suger mama clients though lol.)

I live in the UK and I feel I can afford to tip, which sometimes surprises ppl. My local hair salon hasn’t increased their prices for haircuts and I sense the owner (who is a very stressed, uptight-looking woman) feels the pressure or keep her prices low to not lose clients. My last haircut was £25 which is SO cheap, I tipped my hairdresser £5 and she was pleasantly surprised, she was pleased (not normal to tip in the UK). I really feel for the business owners who feel the pressure to not increase prices out of fear of losing clients, times are hard and I try to tip when I can in restaurants & food delivery cuz I feel for these ppl.

These businesses have taken complete advantage of tipping culture. People who already charge a lot for their services(You know who you are) expecting tips does not sit well with me. Tipping should be appreciated but not required. I'm fine with tipping wait staff but anything beyond that is unecessary. Especially in this economy. I also have witness people in the service industry claim that they want tips because they aren't being paid a fair wage but at the same time they don't want tipping to go away and receive a fair wage because they would be paid less. You aren't entitled to extra money for doing the service you are charging people for.

Waiters are not paid minimum wage, so they count on tips for a living wage. I don't know if any other service workers don't get minimum wage. Bearing this in mind, I think we should tip service workers, although it would be better just to pay them minimum wage or more. But I do object to tipping for take out or drive through orders. Why should we pay someone just for doing their job but not really serving us?

YOU SHOULD TIP YOUR BARISTAS! Unless they’re mean or make your drink nasty and don’t offer to remake it. I personally live off of my tips! And in this economy!! We make minimum wage. Almost every single barista I know, including myself, are sexually harassed almost daily at work. Many of us work hard, always force/wear a smile on our faces, are told to make small talk, and make consistency key. Many of us wake up at 4am to open. You should always tip your baristas in my opinion, because many people don’t. On top of that, some people have huge orders that take forever to finish and STILL don’t tip.

I agree, if it’s self service I’m tipping myself and keeping my money! I don’t think drive through, and even places where you placed an order to go and are picking it up yourself you should be asked for a tip. I’ve always tipped hairstylist, restaurant staff, and actual service workers when I’m actually being provided a service, extra when it’s quality service. Also, beware of places that already include the tip on your bill and ask for an additional tip!

I always tip for takeout orders because the waitress who gets your order together is still only making three dollars an hour and most of the time isn’t getting any tables. She’s usually just getting takeout orders so she’s not making any money and busting her buns for nothing. But I don’t tip at drive-through. But I do tip my hairdresser, and she’s my sister.
