Vehicles produced since the mid 1980s are fuel injected. With a fuel injected car, to start it you just turn the key. My 1967 Mustang has an old school carburetor. Because it has no computer, there's a little more to starting it than just turning the key. If the engine is cold, meaning it has not run in the last few hours, you turn the key to the on position, slowly press the gas pedal to the floor and slowly release it...do this a couple of times...then with your foot off the gas turn the key to crank. If the engine doesn't start, try pumping the gas pedal a couple more times and try to crank it. If you pump the pedal too many times, then the carburetor will get flooded and the engine won't start. If the carburetor gets flooded, turn the key on, press the accelerator to the floor and hold it while you crank it. When a flooded engine starts, it will run rough, so slowly let up on the gas pedal as the engine begins to run smoother. If the engine is warm, meaning it has been run in the last few hours, turn the key on and hold the gas pedal 1/4 to 1/2 down while you crank it and release the gas when the engine starts. Also, you never want to rev a cold engine. Royalty-free music courtesy of Kevin MacLeod, Incompetech.com. Track: Gearhead.
