The Chainsaw Carburetor How it Works
This Fascinating Video Effortlessly Explains the Inside Workings of the Two-Stroke Carburetor for a GREAT UNDERSTANDING.
- So let's begin: The two-stroke carburetor is a little but complicated mechanical marvel that powers the chainsaw, an iconic equipment in the worlds of forestry, landscaping, and outdoor upkeep. This part, which serves as the engine's core, is in charge of supplying the ideal air-fuel ratio required to operate the chainsaw's two-stroke engine at high revs. In this investigation, we'll take a deep dive inside the two-stroke chainsaw carburetor's inner workings to discover how it actually functions.
1. Air Intake and Filter: The chainsaw's air intake system is where it all begins. An air filter is used to draw air in, keeping dust and other material out of the carburetor. For an engine to run properly, the air filter must be clear and clean.
2. Venturi Effect: The air flows through a vital part known as the venturi as it enters the carburetor. The airflow is accelerated by this narrowed area of the carburetor throat, which results in a low-pressure area. The fuel must be drawn into the airstream using this Venturi effect.
3. Fuel Reservoir: A fuel reservoir or float chamber inside the carburetor houses a supply of liquid fuel, often petrol. A system of needle and float valves controls the fuel level. The float valve opens when fuel is used up, letting in more fuel to keep the level balanced.
4. Fuel Atomization: A calibrated jet draws fuel from the reservoir through the low pressure produced by the Venturi effect. In order to ensure full mixing with the fast-moving air, this jet atomizes the fuel into small droplets. A homogeneous and flammable air-fuel mixture is the end result.
5. Adjustment Screws: The majority of carburetors have adjustment screws that can be used to fine-tune the air-fuel ratio. While the low-speed screw regulates the idle mixture, the high-speed screw modifies the mixture for full throttle operation. The performance of the engine must be optimised by these changes.
6. Reed Valve: A reed valve is positioned between the carburetor and the engine's crankcase in some chainsaw carburetors. The reed valve controls the flow of the air-fuel combination, ensuring that none of it runs back into the carburetor.
The well-mixed air-fuel combination is brought into the combustion chamber for combustion and ignition. Here, the spark plug ignites it, causing a strong explosion that powers the chainsaw's piston. The chainsaw's cutting chain is propelled by this mechanical process, which converts chemical energy into mechanical labour.
8. Exhaust System: The engine's exhaust gases leave the engine through an exhaust port after combustion, restarting the cycle as the piston completes its strokes.
An essential part of a two-stroke chainsaw that ensures the engine obtains the proper ratio of air and fuel for dependable and efficient performance is the carburetor. To obtain peak performance and avoid problems like fouled spark plugs, overheating, or excessive fuel consumption, the carburetor must be calibrated to produce the ideal mixture.
The two-stroke chainsaw carburetor is proof of the meticulous engineering needed to power these amazing equipment, to sum up. It is evidence of the fine coordination of airflow, fuel supply, and combustion that allows chainsaws to flourish in the hands of both professionals and homeowners. Understanding how a chainsaw functions can help you to better understand the magic that makes it so useful for a variety of outdoor jobs.
This principle works for most types of Chainsaw saws, and the following also helps with Chainsaw maintenance. So, whether you are using a Stihl Chainsaw, Husquvarna Chainsaw, basically, all types of Petrol Chainsaw are valid for this principle, as well as many types of or a 2 Stroke Engine. The Electric Chainsaw, of course, escapes this whole principle!

You’re grasp of this material is as impressive as your presentation. I am sure you have probably heard it before but if you haven’t, you might consider a quick caveat indicating that the tick-over condition as it relates to a carburetor is understood in other parts of the globe to mean the “idle condition”. Your videos have helped me immeasurably troubleshoot and repair numerous small engines. Please continue to post these as you find new material.

Hello Craig. I think so many people liked the info & video because there is no one out there that teaches this info. I've gone to small engine schools and fixed small engines for many years and nobody teaches specifics on how zama and walbro carbs work- with so many out there for so many years they should have many years ago. It was very interetsing to learn this information and I thank you for that. I've been cleaning & rebuilding them for a long time w/out always knowing how they work 100% exactly-mainly what hole does what and when-the path the fuel takes, etc. Problem is ...in todays world...the holes are so small they dont always clean out... the gas is so lousy (especially if it sat inside there and got old w/ethanol), that they are not worth the time to fix or a great way to test those little valves inside them. If I had to put a number on success's it would 40%. They've also gotten so cheap to replace that its just best to toss them now...especially if your charging 60 to 80 bucks an hr. It was fun to do in the old days but not worth it today if your a pro. Still enjoyed it. Maybe the next video could show the parts to look for that go bad and what they look like...why they go bad and the symptom it causes-working backwards from the symptom. That would be the whole story no one ever discusses-symptom, cause, where to look, how to fix....but then thats why we bring/pay it to the mechanic..right? Keep up the good work Craig. My names is Craig too! Cheers!

WOW! What a great video! You deserve a trophy for this! Something they touch on in the ZAMA videos on rebuilding carbs is the importance of not sticking wire, pins etc into the little round brass plugs with a hole in the center. They explain that these are check valves, and probing them or blowing compressed air or carb spray into them will destroy them! That renders the carb scrap, because they are not a repairable item! Again, excellent video!

I never wanted to really go this far "into the weeds" but it's great now having the background to understand how the tiniest of air leak can prevent something from running. Great video series!!!

What genius has the patent on this carb design? It solves the problem of having a float to deal with. Especially in something that might be upside down. Like some planes, I saw a video on, in WWII. They stalled because the float bowl was full of fuel and when the plane was inverted, the float "floated", which is what it's supposed to do. The problem was that the float floating in an inverted carb will open the needle valve and flood the motor. On restart, black smoke could be seen in the exhaust. I don't know if that was the advent of these diaphragm carbs, but they certainly solve the problem on both two and four-cycle engines.

Fear of the unknown is what this is about. After nearly 40yrs in the tree game I'm finally learning something new. I've recently been doing up some old saws as spares and it's great to have someone who KNOWS what they're talking about explain things. The best way to learn. Thank you for your time and your knowledge. I find that as I get older I enjoy passing on my knowledge to others more than the actual work. Well done Sir.

Fantastic explanation!! NOW I fully understand WHY carbs need to be rebuilt to replace the fragile flapper-valves, and the delicate fuel pump mechanism! What a great VIDEO!! SUPERB! Your added comments about why a float control for fuel metering is not good for trimmers in different positions! I never thought of it! I learned a lot with this video A WHOLE LOT!! Well worth my time! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!! P.S. The 'float metering' also explained why the Spitfire aircraft had problems in the early stages of WWII. The German aircraft didn't have that same problem as they were fuel injected.

Very well explained. Just keep in mind that both Zama and Walbro do not recommend spraying carburetor cleaner or pressurized air into the passages of their carbs. The internal check valves can be damaged. Soaking in gasoline ( I recommend non-ethanol) is the best way to clean them w/o damage, and the gas may also free up a stuck check valve. Great fuel flow video. Cheers.

I was given a Stihl trimmer with a new aftermarket carburetor on it. It would still not run properly. After watching you video I realized that the tiny port on the needle valve side that connects the primer to the body was machined out into the area where the needle valve is. Just a defect from the factory. I worked on this thing for hours. Now I know what is wrong and I can get it taken care of. Thanks for the very informative video!

Although you didn't mention it, toward the end of the video you were explaining the hi/low screws and I think I saw why the low screw has to do with idle. You showed where the channels come out and if I noticed correctly, it showed that the low channel ran behind the throttle plate. If I'm also correct, that is called the pilot jet. Thanks for this video. This video is the best explanation of how a carb works on the entire internet.

I will echo the words of Steve Wayne and Cinninnimon Skoda. In a world where seemingly nothing is made clear, a video like yours is a breath of fresh air. I'm in the early stages of learning about carburetors and I greatly appreciate you sharing your immense knowledge base.

I have worked on 2 cycles carbs for years ( self taught ) and I have read and heard many things on 2 cycle carbs. I do understand the flow of gas through two cycle carbs. I must say I've read some good ones, but as far as video this is clearly the absolute best I've heard and that's coming from someone who will know if what you're saying is incorrect. Very good job!
