I only started learning Korean when I first went to Korea. Even though I only knew about basic Korean and catch words here and there from a native speaker, I still had a good time! I once had an ahjumma talk to me in 15 minutes or so just by me asking in Korean how much the price was for a jacket she was selling. Of course, I didn't comprehend everything she said but I was glad that someone wanted to speak to me in Korean even though she knew I couldn't fully understand her. Another tip is: aside from studying basic phrases to ask someone, also learn potential replies from them. For example, if you ask someone how to go somewhere, also learn words like "go straight", "turn left/right", "stoplight", "street", etc. This adds confidence in approaching someone!

Continuing to simply reply in Korean while they speak English is never a problem I find because often their English is good because they have spoken to a lot of English speakers speaking in poor Korean so they actually understand your different pronunciations. They are happy to understand your Korean speak their good English which then you understand which makes them happy and you just keep replying in the best Korean you’ve got it’s totally a win-win

Speaking is really hard for me. Text I can do easily, but speaking is a big hurdle for me. I'll be going to Korea in a few months, so I'm working on speaking and listening, so that I'm not a huge, anxious mess when I'm there lmao

@@MadeleineMedia16 I am but a poor person xD I've been using Teuida, LingoDeer, and Duolingo to practise my speaking, but I'm also trying to speak with my Korean friend bc constructing sentences while speaking is hard for me ^^

speaking is always easier when you have someone to practice with.

it's really common to receive a long reply in Korean after the initial 안녕하세요, but I learned (memorized) a few sentences to help with that. Progressively, they were (미안해요 한국어 잘 모르겠어요 (when I first learned that) I didn't know what I was literally saying after sorry and the word 한국어). Then I graduated to 미안해요 한국어 조금밖에 잘 모르겠습니다 and these days I also add something like 근데 한국어를 말하기 연습으로 이야기 하면 좋겠어요 😊. It's always useful to memorise have a few sentences in reply to compliments about korean speaking ability because Koreans are always so effusively complimentary, it's kinda embarrassing

The taxi tip is great! I remember getting in a taxi in Mokpo, Jeolla province and having a great conversation with the driver about traveling and my job. I also had another great conversation with a restaurant owner on that trip just by simply asking what he recommended. Like you said Koreans are usually very friendly, patient and helpful. I also like to have conversations with my barber because we're both there together for lots of time. We cover so many topics I didn't think that I could talk about. I just ask how he has been and if he has seen some recent news etc., or ask him for travel recommendations and we end up talking about lots of things.

I heard an employee at a Korean market I went to speaking Korean and I piped in and said, "아녕하세요!" I then proceeded just to spew forth a Korean sentence I'd memorized about how convenience store food is popular in Korea and his eyes lit up, and he was so complimentary to me and spoke back in Korean! It was a great experience for me.

Definitely glad that I found your channel. But right now, I'm more impressed that you can technically write backwards, unless this is some magic trick with a screen thingy that you are doing. Trying to concentrate but also trying to figure out how much time it took to master it. lol😅

Such great tips, Billy! The ice cream one was my fave (definitely filing that away for later usage). Can't wait to surprise the natives! Strangers walk up to me all the time to start conversations in English so I'm hoping this superpower transfers when I travel to Korea. Time will tell :-)

The other day I had my first experience talking to a Korean, and by pure coincidence mind you hahaha for work reasons I had to take an Uber and the driver happened to be korean, which I hadnt notice in the rush, he said he didnt speak Spanish that well (this being in Chile) so I asked him where he was from and he said Korea, and instantly the phrase '한국 사람 이세요?' flowed out my mouth I guess because I had said it so many times in my mind, he answered back in Korean but I couldnt tell what he said and I was too embarrassed to ask him to repeat it :( in the end as neither of us spoke each other's langauge well, we ended up talking in English LOL In the end, it's a first step, right? :D

Because I encounter Koreans mostly at Regional Secular Franciscan events, I need to learn some Franciscan & Catholic vocabulary. Do you have any leads for me? Pauline Books and Media has lots of Korean books and videos, but the website & YT channel is solely in Korean so I can’t figure out even how to navigate the site to find a children’s book 🤣

I'm very introverted myself too. It's not really about that so much. You kind of put on a "mask" and just do what you have to do in order to practice. I made a video about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/noGlY2l3i5Kli7s
