This is fantastic. I love seeing communities coming together to meet their needs collectively, instead of relying on some corporation who's only out to profit. We could apply this concept to so many other things!

I've always enjoyed channel and your style. So down to earth. And eager! i love it so much. I have noticed in the last few vids, you're way laid back and just roll. That too is very cool. Keep on STL and Green Blessings.

Hey Jason, I have been watching your videos for a couple weeks now and really love what you and your family are doing. This video was especially helpful because I plan on doing a small layer operation in the future and was trying to figure out how to buy at bulk price without buying a whole pallet at a time(the project I want to start would only be about 50 layers). I watch a lot of youtube channels on this style of farming but more so folks doing it for profit and not home use. If I ever decided to create my own channel do you think I could ask you for advice on the equipment and knowledge of creating quality material. Your channel is well done and is REAL, that's why I ask. Thanks for the inspiration!

Man, thats literally half the price I'm paying for non-gmo. It also happens to be certified organic, but I don't care so much for that aspect. I really gotta get my storage situation figured out by spring so I can do something like this.

We joined with a number of others once to bulk buy from a single feed company. It saved us maybe a buck or two a bag. I don't know if the hassle was really worth it but it does help with joining community, so maybe that is more the payoff. Will likely try it again, maybe with another feed supplier.
@SowtheLand5 жыл бұрын
I have tried before to buy a single pallet of feed and go in with someone. It only would save a buck or two. Not really worth it i don't think. But this feed co-op we belong to is more than just a pallet. Lot's of people buy in. The more people the better. We save about $10 per bag! the community aspect of it is a plus! thanks Stefani!

Thank you for this video. That is great advice. I have chickens in an urban environment and I have to drive pretty far to find any place that has non GMO soy free and I pay a lot! I'm going to try and see if I can find anyone else who may be interested in my area. Although the max amount of chickens we can have is only 4 so we will need a lot of people. LOL

I'm so glad you did this one. Even though I am in an apartment, this information can be passed onto my son when he gets my granddaughter her rodeo horse in the near future. I assume there are livestock co- ops as well.

Hey, Love the show! I am local in the Weaverville/ Flat Creek area. My question is does the co-op have rabbit feed? We are newbie homesteaders, (Homestead Dream 2018) and have no idea how to join the co-op. We started with rabbits instead of chickens due to my dietary needs. But it's Chicken Dream 2019, in the spring, so my feed needs will be multiplying. Therefore it is time to join a co-op. Not just for the feed, but for the community. Oh we met you guys at the GAFT premiere! Keep up the GREAT content! God Bless you and yours! Thanks
@SowtheLand6 жыл бұрын
Black Pack Homestead Chris and Marella Ogden i don’t see rabbit feed on sunrise farms website. Try calling them. See the email to Tricia in the show notes. Send her an email telling her you want to join the co-op. Thanks!

Great community organized project! ❤️. I would challenge local growers to give growing meat bird organic non GMOs grains a try just to tighten the circle in case delivery becomes non cost effective or unavailable. ❤️

Sir Jason, Enjoyed your co-op promotional video, a great and practical idea!! A question to you or your followers. . . This is not a challenge but a simple question that I have often thought about (Having raised chickens and other farm animals for many years) and can not seem to get a good answer? WHY is there in recent years such a push back and resistance to using soy based protein in animals feeds and always considered a bad thing?? Much of the world uses soybeans as a plant based protein in feed for many types of animals?? Is Peanut meal also a bad protein?? What is the primary protein source that Sunrise farm uses in its poultry feed formula?? Any thoughts?? Thanks!! Phil (The Dixie Wishbone) South Carolina

Hey Jason, I know it's probably a stretch, but if you, or any of your viewers know of a feed co-op in the Long Island, NY area I would love to hear about it. Non-GMO Soy Free is really hard to get here unless your willing to pay $25-35 a bag for it. I would be willing to start one if there's interest from some locals but I'm not aware of any as of now.

Not sure of any in your area. Maybe ask around? thanks Dory!

The reason I choose organic feed, instead of Sunrise, is I know there are no pesticides or insecticides used in the making of the feed. It is more costly, but to know I am not passing on glyphosate through my animals to my land is more important to me. Justin Rhodes brought this up, I called Sunrise and they told me they don’t restrict their farmers from using pesticides and insecticides in the growing process. Is this a concern for your family?
@SowtheLand6 жыл бұрын
I totally get what you are saying. I have talked to sunrise about that. To be honest we can't afford to buy certified organic. It would be double the cost of sunrise. Sunrise feed is the best we can do right now. I think Sunrise is a good option if a family can't afford organic which is most people i know. Maybe in the future we can switch to organic but we are doing our best. I appreciate your comment Ruth.
@ruthbarrett89076 жыл бұрын
I understand the difficulty of cost. I was very regimented when I raised our last batch of 62. The last week of life for them, I moved them 4 times a day and the access to fresh grass helped with feed cost. Since we started fermenting our feed for our layers, we use a third less feed. Praying for you to have abundance and blessings on your farm. Love all you share!

I love this idea but feel that a delivery every other month is not frequent enough. Grain loses so much nutrition after it is milled.
@SowtheLand6 жыл бұрын
for us it's too much. We don't need it all the time. I guess it depends what your specific community would need. A feed place may deliver every month. thanks!

Great video. What kind of savings per bag do you see? I really enjoy the channel.
@SowtheLand6 жыл бұрын
Currently we get about a $10 savings per bag. Would be more of a savings if more people order. Compared to if we were to buy the same feed at a store. thanks!
