How to start a Physical Media collection in 2024

How I'd start is to make a list of my favorite movies (top 10, 25, or 50) and buy them all on the best format available. Movies that you have a deep connection to and are going to watch several more times in your life. Quality over quantity. Do not try to impress anyone else. Only get the stuff that you love.

The most important thing first when you want to start building your own film collection is that you don't think that you're going to buy everything at once because something like that takes time depending on how much money you have available for the hobby and don't be afraid that you might miss out on something because you In principle, you can get everything if you have patience and you don't necessarily need to buy the film in 4K because it's a premium product which isn't exactly cheap. It's best to start small and get the films you love no matter what anyone else does maybe say.

Hi mate Good points.I find the most expensive part of collecting is when you discover boutique blu ray's for the first time, watch your dollars fly away lol.

Love your videos, could you do like a tour of your collection in the future? For me the most difficult part of collecting physical media is deciding where to put all the dvd's and blu-ray's as I have no place left what so ever haha, so I am always curious how others have it set up.

I’ve done a few collection tours a few months ago, did three seperate videos for wrestling, 4k and Bluray. I do plan on doing an updated tour early next year though

I remember when I had invested a few thousand dollars into my DVD collection. Some movies are out of print, and I bought all my stuff brand new from the store. I had left for infantry training with the U.S. Army. And while I was gone my older brother gave out all my movies to his friends and people he had never met. Practically all my movies vanished. I was and still am pretty upset about that. Now I'm starting from scratch. Buying movies from ebay and getting second hand questionable quality, no case and some of them scratched but they still work. Really sucks.

The last 3 players (at once) I bought were Panasonics 4k 820's (future proofing for me) all up I have around 12 players (8 are bluray players) I still have my sony high end dvd player I bought in 1999 at a cost of $1,000 and it's still going strong..I have a dolbyvision 4k laser tv projector (wow factor on that) also a 4k projector for 3D..and an 85" dolby vision TV...great video James..thanks mate

If I would start today, I would collect blu ray, 4k, or both. You’re not going to find everything on 4K yet! Although, saying that not everything is on blu ray either, I still have some DVD’s waiting for a hd version.

Today's modern dvd player have 1080p upscale even cheap ones but Ultra HD can upscale dvd to 4k resolution which is amazing! Xbox or Playstation doesn't upscale dvd you'll need to get a dedicated player that can upscale your dvd collection. That's why dvd is still KING 🤴

Best way to start a physical collection of anything is to look for some old or fat dude who already owns whatever you're trying to collect. Just wait for them to get sick or pass then you could ask their widow to "take the collection off their hands."
