I'm not a prepper fanatic but I found that just bookmarking and viewing the online local grocers 'weekly ads' and buying 6 or a dozen of the 'good deal' items of each my grocery bill dropped over time and I had to get additional shelving. It became easier to plan meals, I saved on gas from fewer trips to the store (which reduced impulse buying as well). I also started gardening which led to more exercise and healthier meals and got into preserving the garden produce by canning and freezing which helped even more in stocking the pantry. By the time Covid hit I was well prepared for the price increases and avoiding crowded stores.

I. C. Spotz I like the idea of shopping online, you certainly can build your food storage supplies that way. One or two extra here and there. I’ve got some canning I need to get done,too.

@@homemakingwithdenise Just recently discovered Walmart will ship to your home for Free at the same cost as you would pay in the store. You can't get all items like fresh or frozen but at least I can avoid some Covid exposure this way. You have to be careful and tic the Walmart 'supplier' tab and look at the final 'check-out' to see if there is a charge for shipping because other suppliers and some items don't qualify for free shipping. I like the drive-thru pickup option as well for fresh and frozen items there is not a surcharge for this service now although I imagine that will change in the future.

We started prepping from a lucky chance of a food store closing for good 50% off everything ...We filled the car so much the Girlfriend had bags on her lap and between her feet in a med size car ..We have Homemade MRE meals i made vacuumed oxy absorbs. mylar bagged 6 meals per bag plus ..teas/powdered drinks sugar etc just started on pickling...As for the trips to the store We run electric on short runs And gas on long trips..I really think the states will be hit hard closer into winter And Canada where i am will really feel the pinch too

I'm a retired senior living alone with my dog. Never in my wildest dreams would I have considered a "prepper pantry" as it just speaks of "doom and gloom." However, I've come to the realization that these are uncertain times. At first I started "stockpiling" items on shelves in my garage (anti-bacterial soap, laundry soap, paper towels, toilet paper, water, wipes, etc...). I live in a pretty warm climate during the summer and began to store extra food in a spare bedroom. However, recently I cleared off two shelves in the spare bedroom closet and stored many of the items you've mentioned. When I go to the grocery, I look for "clearance" food items and strangely have found canned beans for .25 cents, Velveeta cheese dinners for $1.00, etc... It pays to check out the clearance aisle! Dollar Tree can be a great source. It's somewhat "hit or miss," but I've found Lysol "type" spray, Spic 'N Span anti-bacterial cleaner, Lysol "type" wipes, etc... Being an RV'er I've bought boxed milk before in Mexico (usually Lala) and it tastes just fine to me. The Gossner boxed milk at Dollar Tree is a deal, and even without a pandemic going on I prefer to buy it as a single person. Sometimes, I think that I shouldn't be doing this, but if times get tough I can help my neighbors, carry supplies in my RV, and if I find I've "over shopped," donate to a local food pantry. I'm hoping and praying for the best, but do have some concerns that this might be a difficult autumn/winter. Thank you for sharing your ideas and thoughts...

@@homemakingwithdenise Seeing my pioneer stock grandparents being frugal out of necessity and canning their garden produce must have instilled that sense in me that I've gotten back to after these many years. I heard stories that grandma during the depression had a 100lb sack of sugar she would barter with for hard to get items and I remember eating her sand plum jelly from the plums she would pick wild down by the river.

In the planning stage, for me it helped to keep track of what we actually used for two weeks; everything from spices to snacks, what vegetables, grains, meats, etc....I just kept paper in the kitchen and a running list of things used, how much we used, and if there were any leftovers. I figured two weeks would give me a good idea of what to start with and it was - there are so many lists out there, but it is way better to buy what you eat and eat what you buy, so I made my own list!

@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 4 жыл бұрын
Martina, "Best By" date is the time the processor decides the food is at its best quality. Stores can sell foods after the Best By date. Sell By date, rarely seen these days, is the date stores use to put the newest foods behind older foods on the store shelves. A date, used by store personnel, when they are putting new stock on the shelves. Agree that foods beyond the Best By date are not bad. For canned goods, as long a the seal isn't broken, the food is safe to eat. Nothing can get into the can or jar to cause spoilage. Over time, stored foods do lose some of their nutritional value. Depending on the food, there can be some color, flavor and/or texture changes. These do no affect safety of canned foods. White rice, for example, properly stored has a 30+ year shelf life. I've stored it for 10+ years, without a problem. Yet, bags in the stores have a Best By about 2 years out. Wonder how much perfectly good & safe white rice has been sent to land fills because of misunderstanding that Best By date?

Will vacuum seal flour/oats/ rice in mason jars. Freeze flour, rice, etc for three days will kill bug eggs like you, I do this. I also bought #10 cans of flour, rice, beans, sugar, oats from Latter-Day-Saint church online at reasonable price. I Store them in my closet under my clothes and stack them up. I cut up an old sheet and made my own disinfectant cloths. I hemmed the raw edges so they wouldn’t fray. A tall cottage cheese container or plastic coffee can works well to keep them in. One cup of water and one and a half tablespoons of bleach is all it takes. Just roll up the cloths, put them in the container and pour the bleach water over them. Keep the lid on tight in between uses.

One suggestion on using the cardboard flats to stack your cans is to tape the cut edges of the corrugated cardboard in case any bugs have laid eggs in there before they got to you. If folks are trying to start prepping but are having a hard time financially, I know a fabulous book. It is called "Poverty Prepping: How to Stock up for tomorrow when you can't afford to eat today" by Susan Gregersen. I like this book because it is supportive and encouraging every step of the way and it actually goes in steps. Smaller more doable items, then you take the savings from those and progress to harder/higher levels. This is not your typical personal budgeting book. Mrs. Gregersen is from Appalachia. You can view this on Amazon...it is actually a booklet of 75 pages, it is $8.95 the last I looked but if you get this "in your wrist" it would be worth every penny! You can use the same process to get out of credit card debt.

One thing to consider if your going to use cardboard is that cardboard holds moisture so you have to be careful for mold and mildew and it will give off a musty oder after a while..

Great video Denise, I told my family about prepping they said it wasn't necessary. With all the uncertainty w the election and covid in the fall, now is the perfect time to prep. PS Menards has a 4 pound bag of pink salt for 2.25 and a 1 pound package of macaroni and spaghetti for .55 cents. Stay safe.

Since your family doesn't think it's a necessity, just let them know it's for possibilities of job loss, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc too. You will not be lying & it might just make them support you more with your decision.

Great information. Also don't forget to check out local Ethnic grocery stores for great prices on staple items. In a true crisis you might want to make sure you have things like manual can openers, bottle opener, whisk and any items to help open items if you have weak hands. They have on Amazon some great tools for handicaps. Thank you for your very thoughtful videos.

Denise, your videos make me so happy. You are my favorite person to listen to about prepper pantries and you always keep my attention. I have started my dry shelf stable goods and am shopping little by little. I've decided that I would like to create a written out meal plan, with recipes, so that I can then buy exactly what will be needed AND the stress of what to do with the food won't overwhelm me in the emergency. I've also wondered if I can try to rotate my foods over time, and think it's possible if I buy things I usually eat (except for the canned meat-not sure how much of that I want to eat when times are good 🤔).

I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m also glad that you’ve started prepping. I wish everyone would wake up and start storing some food and supplies. Those little flat boxes slide nicely under the bed. I’m bringing a wee relative home to raise in a kinship placement and I’m going to suggest that anyone who might end up with a baby in the family should grab a pack or two of flat fold cloth diapers and pins just in case. I have a one year supply that I’ve built over many years. I’ve not had that luxury of time for the baby so I did load up with everything she’ll need until she’s eating like we do.

My question is how do we hone some skills that we will need in such an emergency. I’m not a baker. Just not in my DNA. But I would like to bake bread and cakes etc. can you show us some skills that may come in handy in such a crisis that we could learn and add to our repertoire. Just a heads up... I haven't found weevils but some type of moth in some things. Things like rice that I didn't freeze but had a tight screw on lid. Large containers of ranch powder and brown gravy. And today I opened up 2 of the jiffy mixes and one had the larvae and the other had the hatched moth alive inside it. My plan was to measure 1 box of mix and seal them all without packaging so I could just measure out the amount... Anyway now they all go in the trash. It's so disappointing !!!

Ugh, Debbie. No, no, no, no, no! I put 12 boxes of Jiffy mix in the freezer. I’ve had them in their several days but now ...I’m leaving them in their a few more days. I plan to do the same thing...measure out one box then put them in a container. I’ve gotten those little moths in my birdseed but I’ve been lucky this summer...so far. I’m cleaning my cupboard and liberally sprinkling the shelves with bay leaves. That is supposed to help. Yuck! I’m going to examine my Jiffy mix carefully.

@@homemakingwithdenise I don't even know what these moth things are but ...wings and all like a bigger moth only smaller. I have 20 boxes of the jiffy to throw away. So sad. I've been working 6 days a week and didn't put them away as quickly as I should have. I also never thought about them being in nuts, ranch powder or the brown gravy mix. I thought I'd pass that along. I even have the large seasonings from Sam's club.... Its ALL going to spend time in the freezer. The other thing I recently learned was to freeze, thaw and refreeze before storing. Let everything come to room temp for 24 hours in between.

I had tiny little insects in my pantry that came from flour, cornmeal etc yrs ago. So, I called out a pest control company to spray my house being so naive at that time. Luckily, he was honest with me & told me to always freeze things like that first but, he too said to put 1 bay leaf per shelf in my pantry & that would prevent any other pests like that. Of course, I've had no problems since.
