Save all your grocery receipts, by the end of 3-6 months you have a list of all food items you actually use. Plus how often you buy it and how fast you use it.

I’ve watched countless videos on building an adequate emergency food supply. Yours is the best one I’ve watched so far. You offer clear information with only the pertinent details, not mundane details such as how many cans of Goya black beans you purchased. It gives far more valuable information such as how to cycle the food, a way to determine needed quantities and where to get the food grade storage buckets in the link. Congratulations on being the champion, sharing this valuable information with exceptional quality and an extremely high level of excellence.

Seems to me, that a three month supply of food, should be just the very beginning in teaching folks to be resilient. Even as a senior citizen on Social Security, plus a tiny pension I have been able to stash enough food and supplies to last two or three years, longer with proper rationing; and that includes enough to provide for my daughter and family as well as myself and pets. I shop at a Grocery Outlet, and save between 50% to 75% and more. I NEVER MEAL PLAN, but, I only buy items I know I will use. I choose only from what is on sale and purchase in multiples. Because I keep my receipts, I estimate, that within the last few months, I have saved at least $1000.00. Enough to buy a Berkey 'scratch and dent' water purifier, and have at least $750.00 towards the replacement of an old car, for a better used one. If you have a large enough variety of foods and eat what is in season if fresh, then it is easy to pick and choose what to eat at short notice, however, I never open something new until what is open has been used. Grocery Outlet stores do not use coupons, except their own, which comes out only once in a while. And, by the way, Grocery Outlet toliet costs half what it sells for at Costco!

Very informative! Another idea for long-term food storage is to learn to cook from scratch. If a longer-term problem occurs, breads, crackers, mixes, and snacks will expire quickly, but you can still eat them if you know how to make them.

Use some bay leafs in the buckets to deter bugs. They hate the smell. Just Remember to take the leafs out . Many folks who bake a lot always freeze their flours for 2 weeks to kill bugs and eggs.

We date all food items along with disposables so we know how often we need to replace an item, this also allows for us to see how fast we go through our pantry when the entire family (13 people) is here. So if we have to be in one house for an extended period of time we know what we have to have on hand. If items are getting close to the best buy date we donate those items to local food banks, rotating the food banks we donate to, and add those items to the shopping next time.

Excellent! Lovely the way your pantry is built. I have been trying to little by little restock items that are infrequent purchases but are needed in our lives. One of the first items I got was a personal hygiene product that at the beginning of the pandemic and for several months was not available so I stocked up on that. Many nonperishable food items will last forever no matter what the date printed on the packaging says, it will last for decades. Since it will last for decades, it is much easier to find a source and stock up, especially with coupons and a sale. Plus I got it via shopping online. I was in my CVS the other day and found that what I had bought online had ended up being cheaper that way than buying it at the actual store! There is no rule that says you have to buy something at an actual store when you can buy it online in your jammies and have the PO deliver it for you. :)

8:08 i accidentally started doing this! It's so helpful! I have bins in my fridge and cupboards, so I sorted items into them by category, and then once I did that i realized i could see at a glance what I needed and what i had too much of. It's awesome. I have a visual in my mind because the stuff is always in the same place. If it doesn't look as full as I think it should, it sticks with me so I remember to get more

Thanks for the great ideas! We already mark a lot of pantry items when open them because sometimes they get lost in our pantry and then we know how old they really are when we find them. 😊 Now I’m going to use that to track how quickly we finish them! Thanks also for the link to the buckets. I was just going to start looking around for some of those. You are a natural teacher. As someone who was a teacher for 20 years, I know it when I see it. Excellent job. I have been trying to explain the short term pantry to people for a year. I have to say, though, I prefer a year instead of 3 months, it just works for me. But I so agree, 100%. Like you, I buy on sale, save a fortune. This video deserves more exposure. Excellent. PS I get some real weird looks when I buy a few cases of beets and tuna. LOL.

I agree with almost all of it. Except the long term storage should be the first shop to resupply the house pantry. Don’t spend valuable funds on foods that will sit in storage for 20 years. Or more. Store what you use, yes. But aside from the extreme emergency storage. Long term storage should be utilized. And replenished.

I have the best by date written on my long term food, I will be rotating it in 5-10 years before that date and restocking. It’s a waste of money to pay for the special long term packing and then eating it the next year anyways.

Freeze your rice and flour and flour products ( pasta, crackers etc ) for 48 to 72 hours right after you purchase them. Then repackage in Mylar bags or buckets ( or both, I put my Mylar bags in buckets ) for long term storage. The freezing kills all the larva bugs ( yes, they are there ) and your food will taste fresh years after!

Thank you Richelle! It is just a regular 5 gallon, food grade bucket with a gamma seal lid. If you look on amazon for "gamma seal lid," you will see all kinds of colors. Here is another place to get gamma seal lids: www.usaemergencysupply.com/emergency-supplies/food-storage-equipment/gamma-seal-lids Thanks for watching!

Hi Arigna Watersreaser. Yep, the 5 gallon buckets at Home Depot will work perfectly, as long as they are food grade. Then you can just stick your gamma seal lid on it and it will be super convenient. Thanks for watching.

The only non-perishable food I use is coffee.... and I am thinking of giving it up... I am having to re-think everything... because I see the wisdom in having a "prepper's pantry"... because grains, legumes and most vegetables cause my body so much pain it is challenging.

This is the best video and explanation about long term and short term 3 mo food storage. Your video should be featured on FEMA website! 😀 I have been stock up my pantry with foods and also with disposable plates, cups, utensil, and baby wipes. I love your walk-in and organized pantry. I will buy those buckets to store flour and rice. Thanks for sharing.

My main issue is that i feel like I'm stocking foods that we never eat. We never eat out of cans and boxes. It's just me and hubby. So I'm stocking foods i know my husband will eat because he's a regular carb eater. I'm keto, so I'm basically stocking up on canned meats and fishes and canned veggies. Most of these last 2-3 years

Hi Em A! Thanks for the comment. Didn’t know there was a name for the system we were using. We modeled this system after what we were seeing grocery stores doing with the food on their shelves. Really appreciate you watching and the helpful comment!

If inflation on prices happens in emergency you will have what you need. Money will be the new currency. It’s been hard stocking up on stuff for my house because we eat a lot of meat and veggies a snack bananas and apples i can get dried apples though. We bought 5 gallon buckets and fill with sugar, flour, oats, rice. Things we always use and rotate through we also bought wheat and a grinder since wheat lasts forever basically lol we canned chicken this month too so much cheaper!

I must admit the LDS church does such a good job teaching this to members. Many of the youtubers I have watched to learn about this topic have been LDS and I can tell they know their stuff. Others are more off-the-grid homesteaders who are also extremely knowledgeable, and are actually more survivalists in case ALL the shtf.

Hi JM Cast! As you obviously figured out, we learned the things we shared in this video from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We too have also been learning lots from the homesteaders lately. We just got chickens and are getting our backyard set up where we can be more self reliant and produce our own food. Thanks for the comment!

@@ActivelyFamily I have some LDS roots although my great grandfather left the church so the connection is a bit far back. The food storage concept always felt so overwhelming, but now it is plainly obvious how necessary it is.
@ActivelyFamily
@ActivelyFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree about the need to get prepared. Also completely understand how overwhelming this can all be. But, as we got going, we figured out that it doesn't have to be as complicated as some people make it out to be. Good luck putting together a preparedness plan for your family. All the best!

One item I think of is fuel, propane and propane stove for cooking, also twenty gallons of gasoline with sea foam or fuel stabilizer. Fuel is a big deal. Without fuel food is nothing. Without gasoline my car is a chair.

You are right on. After you’ve got your food supply you need to consider how you are going to cook it. Fuel is key.

Nice video. Where I struggle is my millennial kids might have to move back home if things get bad. And they aren’t yet into food storage. So how do I stock for that event? Maybe the answer is ‘better education ‘!
@ActivelyFamily
@ActivelyFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark! That’s a tough one. Our kids have not flown the coop yet, so we have not had to crack that nut. One thing I’ve thought about doing, besides “better education,” would be to get them a food bucket or two. They don’t take up too much space and pack quite a few calories. Here’s an option: www.costco.com/chef%e2%80%99s-banquet-ark-2020-food-storage-kit-30-day-supply-in-black-or-white-bucket.product.100646521.html

I had that happen during the pandemic. I made it clear that we super stock and that my pantry was not a free for all to eat like its your job... also, i collect rent. Its to cut down on expenses related to binging and leaving the lights on during their 30 minute showers... they're watching prepping videos now and seeing the wisdom of preparing, saving and paying cash for everything in their lives.
