As in to make a contract with an author and publish their books under your LLC? Well, that is what publishing companies do. But you need to make sure that the book you're going to publish is one that has a unique attribute to it that you know you can market, or the author has a fan base that will ensure book sales - but let's face it, that last one will be rare to find as a new publisher with no big name previous success. So, it comes down to "can you market that book and turn a profit." If the answer is yes, then you're in.

You are absolutely correct with all your information. I do accounting and I work with lots of attorney's. Everyone who is thinking of starting a company should be aware of the downfalls and issues that can arise. That's why you want to form a proper and correct company in the first place.

I think when it says "select a state" it's not meaning that you get to choose. It means that you select the state in which you reside/where your company actually is.

+Trisha Hilborn actually that depends. Certain states in that list are ones that you can setup a "Virtual Office" for. When you do this, they will give you a place "place" in a physical office and allow you to use that as the place of business in that state...meaning your LLC can be legally setup in that state. That service will then forward your mail to you, and all is good ;) I don't live in Wyoming, but my office is setup in Wyoming and therefore my LLC was legally able to be setup in Wyoming, which has very beneficial tax benefits.

Yes. Publish your books through your company. In short...when you publish something you make it available for the public. Link with 48hr books to print your books (or Amazon kdp) then sell on your website. Create an e commerce.

+Jasmine McAfee I use Createspace...it's owned by Amazon so its a print on demand. If someone buys the print book on Amazon, then Amazon will print the book and ship it to the person and send you the money..pretty easy for us. I could get all this info from Legal Zoom. I wanted to know more specifics of WHY starting your own publishing company as a Author benefits you, as in 3 party publisher not being able to rip you off by not reporting your book sales to you. Bottom line is pay. If you own your own publishing company, I'd assume there is no middle man, thus all sales reported directly to you. Is that the case, yes, no? Can someone clarify that?

Dave, if you are the only one on the LLC does IRS look at it tax-wise as your own income and not separate as a business? I know thaat by teh number of members they can look at the LLC as a corporation, partnership, or the owner's tax return.

The only question you should care about is do you get paid more? And does owning own publishing company prevent you from being ripped off by seedy 'other' publishing companies that may not report sales to you...that's all that matters!
