The lever you call the choke is actually the starting carburettor, which is a separate small, rich, carb feeding directly into the inlet manifold. Chokes, as we know them, hadn't yet been invented. To start a cold engine it is essential that the hand throttle is fully closed, not just half way down, but fully down. This closes the main butterfly and ensures that all manifold suction is applied to the starting carb. The ignition l;ever should be put down to late. The engine will start first turn. The hand throttle is then slowly opened and the starting carb closed. Easy!

That's if the starting carburettor has been correctly adjusted, which I sincerely doubt! Incidentally, the starting carburettor is an integral part of the main carburettor, not as on a PI or PII. Also interesting that this is obviously a very early 20hp chassis, with the mixture control and starting carb control both mounted on the dashboard... Coachwork, from what I can see of it is much later.

@@wheelwells148 On the 20 and 20/25 the starting carb may well be integral with the main carb, but it is totally independent. It is a simple job to adjust correctly the starting carb. Just follow the handbook. The problem with most people who have these cars is that they either do not have the handbook, or do not care how to set the car up correctly. They are a joy to own and drive.

That’s the driver’s problem. You don’t drive a Rolls Royce. You are _driven_ in a Rolls Royce.😁

Your pedal rubbers need to be replaced. Driving a car with pedals like yours is dangerous.

That´s not a RR 20 HP, these have a horizontal grill.
