Fairly Intermediate Space Wolf player here. My advice would be to find a character in the codex you like or get a regular captain or a primaries one and build your story from there. The 12 great companies offer a lot of diversity for theme but you can still mix and match if you choose too. For character and unit investments that you'll want regardless of the meta, Thunderwolf Calvary are always solid (magnetize the weapon options if you can), Murderfang offers a lot of kitbash freedom and will always be a solid beatstick usually. Terminators and Wolf Guard are always solid, and the a mix of the primaris and first born dreads will do you fine. Primaris Chaplain on bike is a must. Rune Priests or optional but depending on the list they really help buff your heavy damage dealers and characters. Long fangs are also great options. All offer great options in combat and the current combat doctrine is solid so most thing wont want to get into combat with you from the start. Overall you can go any which way you choose between the wolf based units, terminators or dreadnoughts and it'll be a ton of fun and once you are comfortable with kitbashing fur and trinkets the world is yours with creativity.

Problem with the patrols boxes is none give you a decent set of minis for SW rules. The best in them the dreadnought, eliminators, librarian and Impulsor are in different boxes so it's really inneficient. Jump packs, blood claws or assault intercessors, wolf guard/termis, long fangs & drop pod, incursors, characters on bikes, are where you want to drop £, on the fightiest units you can get with some mobility. Maybe dreadnoughts, cyberwolves, bladeguard, impulsors if you are looking to fill a list. Otherwise you sink your coin into minis that play poorly AND don't look like SW which is a glum place for someone trying to start an army to end up in.

@@SleepyHarbor. Hi, 10 month old comment so it applies to 9th edition sensibilities. Only had 24 hours with current Index which will probably get FAQ'd as it contains several errors (like long fangs missing Adeptus astartes keyword). It's probably better to wait a few weeks into 10th to see what emergent playstyles the factions crete and go from there to look for something that resonates with you.

The Horus Heresy Boxed set is a great way to start a Spacewolves army. It's 1480 points if you use everything in the box with minimal upgrade.

Horus Heresy boxset with left over Blood Claw bits. Makes a great Space Wolf force. Also Wulfen box has more axes than any other box I could find and some clever placing can get you some thematic Wolf Guard with axes or Deathsworn for HH games

The fact that they decided to put an Impulsor in the "Phobos" box, you know, the guys that have forward deployment all over the place, and put an Invictor in the Space Wolves box, that fits so much better with the Phobos guys, seems like an intentional F you to devotees of both the 'Wolves AND Phobos Marines. The Rout could put that Impulsor to much better use.

A decent way to personalize your Space Wolves army is to look for third party bits sellers. Puppetswar, Kromlech, and Spellcrow all offer a range of heads, shoulder pads, torsos, and other parts in the Space Wolves style. You can easily make an otherwise generic SM model into a proper werewolf viking.

Love the wolves! I do agreee that unless you take then OG special characters, if you build your down with the Current CP changes u don’t have much to spend on and end up taking away from the fun of lost building and customizing your list and chapter. Very sad! The other major issue is how GW never game the Wolfguard And chariot keywords any meaning or rules. Vs what inner circle got and what Other factions got. Lame on the GW part. Just lazy imho. One unit that is great again are the Wulfen and Wulfen dreads. Good rules good points and should be leaned into.

The only thing I know of/use for the "WolfGuard" keyword is the crusade agenda 'Show them how we fight' which is really fluffy and fits brilliantly with the lore... blood Claws basically gain XP when a wolf guard makes a kill within 6". But yeah, other than that... No benefit at all 😭

@@mattfink9349WG keyword makes a slight difference to how Blood Claws/Skyclaws charge if one is present. Unsure if headstrong even effects Swiftclaws without checking the 'dex. Edit: Yeah they do so a wolf guard unit tweaks how Swiftclaws charge too, but that's about it.

My money's on 11th, with them testing the waters a bit and massively scaling down the OG marines in the 9.5 and 10th codex's.

I agree with your prediction for the process but think it will be quicker than that. I think they might combine the datasheets with Primarius where they can (making them the same stats etc) and replacing the ones where they can't next edition. Then they'll start pulling the first born sprues over time.

10th shouls be the choice, given the recent casaulties of war, though my first born are Horus Heresy beakies, with better scale, and different shoulder pads, so they may yet live until 11th. Luckily they only have to perfect the rubicon primaris, and fluff says, it's getting easier with every year (as I remember).

@@eugenax9345 I wouldn't be surprised if H.H.s success or failure was the deciding factor. If it does well that might be taken as a sign of interest in the old marines. I just wish the scale wasn't so off. mini marines being the size of a guardsmen always bothered me, but then they up'd chaos, and primaris are even bigger then them. Just visually it fucks with me, and Its even worse if you have old marines next to primaris. I like all the new sculps, but I despise the lore behind them to the point I refuse to by primaris even though theirs a dozen + chapters id love to paint up and own. I know just a salty old fuck, But i do believe theirs enough of us to be worth mining, Id love if they sold marines by armor, with 1-5 being HH, and the rest just being 40k. All at true scale. New models would convince me that they're not getting the axe and its worth investing in Blood ravens and Cacharadons. Until then I play chaos and Xenos, and maybe horus heresy.

I think within 5 years with HH being the system to 'support' first born. Old players like myself who returned with 8th edition that had a decade + old army it was an easy progression to primaris with the starter boxes. Along with rumours of first born being deleted as soon as primaris were launched it put me off buying first born models as I already had a load. I know I am not alone in the middle age 40k community most of my space wolf army is primaris now.

So I was reconsidering starting a 40k army after a decade . And the GW pricing shenanigans are ,apparently worse then ever. They offer a combat patrol that now costs twice the amount it used to, gives you around 500 pts - but the issue is the stuff you're getting is still sub par to other codex choices. And a decade later, GW is still not giving you all the model options a unit can field... I'll pass. No money sink for me. Thank you for the nice video, keep up the good work! @@Ghislain82 Almost my entire army is primaris based except for models like Wulfen and Thunderwolf cav because I greatly prefer the primaris sculpts for painting. I use a lot of third party and GW wolf bits along with greenstuff to get the classic aesthetic. If you haven't tried greenstuff I would highly recommend it, lots of fun and it lets you make your minis really unique and personal

@@Wolfbroa if they were 1000IQ they would make two models for Corvus and Russ, one where they are in their normal human forms, and another when they are transformed into huge demonic monster wolf/crow mode. Could have some mechanic on the tabletop where you can roll to replace the human model with the demon for a few turns which is very powerful.

Like it or not, but space marines sell. And they sell a lot. So GW is incentivized to give them more stuff because each product they release for them sells more than the new products for any other army. How many people in these comments have at least one space marine force, even if it’s not their primary or favorite faction? I’ll bet far far more than not.
