My favorite thing about nids is that when painting, literally anything looks good on them. You can spit in the face of color theory like I did with my tyranids, and that just makes them look more alien and unnatural!

I haven’t posted them online a ton but the army has orange skin with a bit of pink drybrushed on the skin and the carapace is green with light blue drybrushed on. I am in the process of 3d printing antlers for all my tyranids and my hive fleet is named hive fleet jackalope. My nids are goofy and I’m not a great painter at all, but I have never seen a tyranid paint job I didn’t like. I legitimately chose my nids colors by borrowing some unused colors from a friend and seeing what happened. Nids are a fantastic starting army in my opinion and are great for fun experimentation or artistic expression.

welcome to the hive mind :D i started to collect way back in 4th edition, and have slowly gotten myself up to 12k points. lost a little over 1k points with the purge of FW models to legends, but stil super nice models. lost the 2 hierodules, 1 malanthrope and 2 Dimachaerons. they where also our only big melee hitters but not worth it in points.

I’m returning to 40k after about 20 years (stopped when I was 15). It seems to have changed a little since I last played, but I always wanted to get into Nids, but never got around to it. So I got the starter set, later found a leviathan box at hobby store, then picked up space marine game at target. That is 1400 points of Tyranids less than $400, and got 1500 points of space marines. I’m looking to add some bigger bugs now, Hive Tyrant, Tyrnofex, and couple of Exocrine.

I found a nice way to bulk up your supply of termagants if you dont care about the special weapons options, is the space marine board game that you can get from target. 40 bucks gets you 20 termagants, 2 rippers, and the marine character. The gants are basically the monopose kits from the leviathan box, catch it right and target might even have a markdown on their board games.

I started my Tyranids army with Leviathan - at least, I pre-ordered Leviathan first… but I couldn’t wait for launch day so I bought the coolest looking ‘Nids I could find, including a Tyrannofex, Maleceptor, Carnifex brood, and Zoanthropes. I found that learning to paint Tyranids was easier with the larger models. In the past, I painted the infantry models from Dark Imperium and Indomitus first and struggled with the details and highlights because I was learning to paint ATT. The logic being I’d rather screw up painting common infantry than characters or vehicles, but the flaw in that logic was infantry are the backbone of every army so my poorly painted models would be front and centre. Whereas large and expensive monsters and vehicles aren’t included in every list. Another advantage with large models is that they’re (usually) more robust so if I had to strip the paint off, there was less chance they’d break if I scrubbed too hard with a brush, whereas Necron Warriors are kinda spindly and delicate, and Plague Marines had a lot of bits that could break off. Tyranid monsters do have LOTS of claws, teeth, and spikes, but they’re tough in comparison. That’s why if you’re starting a Tyranids army, I recommend painting the larger units first, taking advantage of the larger canvas, figuring out your colour scheme for the ‘Nids, and working your way down to the small horde-y models.

One of the nicer parts of collecting tyranids is that you can't paint them wrong without purposefully doing so. And even then it could end up looking just fine.

My Hunter Screamer looked too orange on the skin I'm told. But I don't have the bright skin tone paint I needed. :( I used ratskin as base, radiant fleshtone as a layer, and used a wash of agrax fleshtone.

I really hate how synaptic nexus who is supposed to be for psychic bugs but doesn't help them almost at all. It should give all psychic weapons assault, or maybe higher strength or ap. Perhaps rerolls on wounds. Hell, I'd take another use or two of shadow in the warp. Perhaps the spychic pressure causes a -2 battle shock Stratagems are also lacking for the theme massively to me.

@@aarondavid8319 the tyranids would work quite well in AoS tbh, the main problem is that the bugs are scifi and aos is fantasy, but they would work. Fantasy battles, not so much. Tyranids and tau would work well in a lot of worlds, just look at the covenant for the Tau and the zerg for the tyranid. The problem is in part that the nids were made specifically for 40K, but they can be adapted into a lot of places

Tyranid also have some of the best 3rd party models available that don't stray too far from the 40k aesthetic. They're mostly a 1:1 of GW models but with significantly more detail.

Started Nids way back in 4th edition where i got my first ones with the Battle for maggrace box. now after many years with slowly getting more i'm at 12k points :D would have been over 13k points if not for loosing FW models to the purge :( and yes a good start is if you can get the nid part of the Leviathan box if not then the Ultimate set, unfortunately the Combat patrol that is just models from the Starter boxes is NOT worth it, but if you can find one of the older combat patrols go for it :) Nids can be played in many ways from Horde to Monsters but also mixed :) GW thinks they are a melee faction if we look at the army and detachment rules, but our shooting works best aka exocrine and Tyranofex.

I bought 3x skaventide boxes to use 120 clan rats as hormagaunts, the snipers as 9 zoenthropes, the rattling guns as Exocrine, the mounted rat will get prime wings to be a winged tyranids prime, and grey seer ECT ends up being around 2000+ points for $675 and then just selling the storm cast to a coworker for a cheap $150 to recoup a little money and help him get a sigmar army. So I'll be bringing skaven with tyranid rules to 40k It's not a great list but will be fun.

Why collect a Tyranid Army? They're neat little guys and they're much, much different than everything else in the setting. Why NOT to collect a Tyranid Army? -They're not Marines and they're not Imperium, which means they will always be second-class citizens -They're not power armor or tanks, so they'll always be weaker weapons and weaker armor than nearly every other faction -The head of GW Design is a man named Robin Cruddace who has been systematically sabotaging the faction since 5th edition -What's good in one edition will almost always be trash in the next edition (or more), forever leaving around a third of the codex vestigial at best. -Morale used to be super important in the game, and Tyranids were totally immune to it, which meant they paid a premium on everything. They still have the 'resistant' rules, but are no longer immune. Also, morale is far, FAR less important and it gets less important with every subsequent edition. However, Tyranids STILL pay a premium on all of their units for the largely useless faction rule (until this most recent rework last month). Should you buy them? Sure. They're neat little guys. It's just worth remembering that the faction goes from 'gloriously competent' (2nd-4th & 9th first half) to 'unplayablly feeble' (5th-7th & 10th first half) and has only ever really been mid-ground in 8th. So you're likely to be ping ponging a lot harder than most other factions.
