How To Start A War And Get Away With It

Twenty years ago the U.S. began its invasion of Iraq. What came next is a story well tread- a bloody, brutal and senseless war- but what lead up to the invasion deserves just as much scrutiny. Americans had come to believe the target for their anger and grief over 9/11, the people who’d done it and the means of perpetuating more harm against the U.S. were in Iraq, all beliefs that were later revealed to be baseless. But anger alone didn’t spur America to go to war, and it wasn’t the only thing that blinded Americans to the truth. Over the course of 18 months, the U.S. news media literally helped make the case for the country to go to war with spurious claims, dubious sources and an unquestioning deference to government talking points. Now 20 years later, Sana Saeed, in the first episode of Backspace’s second season, investigates the worst warmongering in the history of U.S. media (that makes yellow journalism look pale in comparison) and traces the line from the past to where the worst offenders, in government and media, are today.

We can learn a lot from Ukraine. Recently, Jens Stoltenberg said that the war didn't start on February 24, it started in 2014, and that NATO has heavily supported Ukraine since then. This means that Stoltenberg admits that - the war was not started in 2022, but in 2014 - the war was not started by Russia, but by the coup government of Ukraine, against its own people in the eastern parts of Ukraine. - that NATO heavily supported this war of the coup regime against the Ukrainian people in the west, during which at least 14'000 people died. US Sparks Turmoil in Georgia to Open New Front Against Russia My heart literally sank as I got flashbacks from Libya, Ukraine maidan, the Arab spring, the iran riots, etc when I saw the protesters. Imagine the west has weaponized a nation's own people to attack their own government, trying to protect them. Weaponizing Hope's, dreams and the young's desperation for a better life is immensely cruel. Thank you Brian, you are literally among the very few people who expose and talk about color revolutions. Color revolutions are a WMD's more potent and lethal than nuclear weapons. I myself remember at a young age of these NGO's that in hindsight, were slowly indoctrinating us to follow their ways. Today sadly, some of my peers are for the other team. Forgive me, it pains me to see this and feel helpless. Worse is the fact that non western countries mostly cannot defend with the west due to the west having all the money and control of culture. And the young don't realize what they are doing. -Charles k "...the fact that US-sponsored protesters are complaining about “Russian influence” but are eagerly fighting against legislation meant to make foreign funding more transparent once again illustrates how supposed “Western values” are mere smokescreens behind which the US and its allies advance their foreign policy objectives in contravention of international law, not in support of it." @@eleworld9371 Some guy said that it was revenge for building an empire 3000 years ago. He said that nations are vengeful entities that don't let things slide ever. Many human groups have been wiped out of existence since the dawn of mankind. Wars of conquest would be wage on large scales pushing groups to the brink, rivers would run red with blood. The wars were waged on every corner of earth, the weaker groups some times teamed up to fight the common enemy, wiping them out. Some people do nothing and are erased forever. No one is spared, no tears are shed, no where to flee, fight till the end or be wiped out peacefully. The conquerors are loved, respected forever. We are all here because conquest was waged in every corner since the dawn. It was cruel, brutal, thorough, epic, unavoidable, and you either conquered or be conquered. Peacefully get wiped out by those destined for glory, or go down in spectacular and epic fashion. Don't fight a lone to avoid extinction. To stand a lone is to await extinction.

I am a partially disabled Air Force Veteran who was enlisted during 9/11 until 12/2004. I was only 19 when it happened and had taken to my family's politics, Republican. However, during my last year and a half in the Air Force Air Intelligence Agency I learned things that I wasn't aware of and hadn't been paying attention too. Because of that I found it really hard to reconcile with myself and what was being done in our name. Though I was a lucky one and wasn't deployed to war, I still feel the pain and sorrow that I felt the moment I found out the truth. Now as a Christian Gay Democrat I still fight with myself internally, living on only $300 per month in disability compensation, trying to find ways to make up for the wrong our government does to the innocent. 😢 I am still ashamed to say that I'm an American due to the BS our government does. Awesome report and thank you for making sure no one ever forgets.

It turns out I'm gay, and I still am a Christian and I'm a Democrat who thinks we shouldn't have to go to war just because a bunch of rich white people wanting to steal a country and gain as much money as they can make from said country. Fun fact: the US has not formally declared war since WWll, but has carried out military actions more than 300 times since. Only Congress has the authority to declare war, as the founding fathers intended, but successive presidents have utilized the "use of military force" as a way to skirt Congressional authority. Also, a declaration of war has legal preconditions, which have mostly not been met in most cases of US "use of military force"

And the wars against the Native Nations of America either are not counted, for the same reason). Anyway: We fought against 29 countries. We have "Grown" 711 the size of our territory from the original 13 colonies. At least, what you get is what you, but with someone *saying* they're so just and then not being that... that's nefarious.

The Iraq war reminds me of the Vietnam War. After Ho Chi Minh defeated the French in 1945, there was an agreement for a presidential election in 1954. Well, the US knew that South Vietnam's Diem had no chance running against Minh who was regarded as the brightest star in Asia (for defeating the French)... so the US forfeited the accord, and began what's known as the Vietnam War... the US hasn't won a single war since ww2. It lost so much money, that our debt is $31 trillion, our economy crumbles, 500k homeless, and a deteriorating infrastructure... it's time to put down our weapons. It's time to learn from China. They're by the way the master builders. Travel there and you'll see how advanced they are

China has a lot of poor folk too. And their govt is right now engaged in crimes against humanity. Ever heard of the Uighurs? China is committing genocide against them as we speak. Its like Abu Graib but systematic and such crimes are committed against everyone of a particular ethnic group. Its one thing to be a master builder. But if you truly want to be admired you have to not engage in ethnic cleansing. And that is just a first step and a very low bar. Do that and you won't be *hated* but do that and also do some positive things and you'll get admired.

Psychopaths do not have a sense of conscience. And when told they get to live forever as a consequence of Believing, well, then they can claim that their god told them to start a war and get maximum support. Their god committed genocide on the entire planet so go figure that his most prominent spokesmen do things like invade Iraq or Ukraine. Both of those guys wore their god on their sleeve and made sure their citizens saw them as god worshipping holy men so that the citizens wouldn't mind so much with all the war crimes because what big deal is a war crime when you worship a god who *brags about* murdering everyone on the planet in a great big flood and says its why you should Fear him?

You gotta imagine also, these type of invasions were harder to do 20 years ago because of the USSR and China. The USSR helped liberate most of Africa while the west tried to keep them as colonial states. After the fall of the USSR there was not enough nations willing to help prevent the u.s from waging wars where ever they wanted anymore. The communist were a great force of defense against u.s and western imperialist invasions.

@@vincentlagrange2329 the Vietnam invasion was about the US capitalist class securing foreign assets that they seized through imperialism and maintaining there grip by supporting there puppet dictatorship in the south. The common people of Vietnam wanted to break free and were fighting for independence and freedom, while the west was trying to suppress there rebellion. The capitalist class has waged war on the ideology of Communism and Socialism, from the very beginning, domestic and abroad, worried it would sweep the world like wildfire and eventually remove the power they established through colonialism and imperialism. The USSR at the time was giving out millions worldwide in weapons, supplies etc to revolutionary groups fighting against imperialism, in Vietnam it was no different, they gave millions in economic aid and support with weapons, medical supplies etc to the Vietnam people, and after they won they got more support so they could build factories, power plants, coal mines etc. The U.S could not control the people of Vietnam anymore, lost control and had to pull out. The common people of Vietnam won, secured there nation afterwards and had to build out of the destruction we left.
