You’re right about the shorts content. I was at 51 subs, started uploading shorts of funny or scary moments from my full videos and uploading one a day on the days I didn’t upload a full video, and it took me from 51 subs to over 250 in a flat 2 weeks. The growth is pretty insane imo

I feel like the problem with subscribers you gain from shorts is that they're insanely hard to push to viewers of your long form content. This is why I stopped posting shorts because I wasn't seeing an increase in views on my main videos.

Solid advice. It’s important that YOU are equally as valuable to the audience as the game you are playing. That’s why so many gaming creators die. They just want to upload themselves playing video games but don’t actually create content that viewers would enjoy. It’s important that we really have our personality in our gaming content that way we can pivot in the future.

I really want to make content either solo or with friends where we goof off in a variety of games and people will watch the channel for the personalities and the game comes second. What's wrong with sticking to one game is that naturally, the games will die out and so will your channel and if you made a career of it, that will end too. I only made two videos and I'm not surprised its not going anywhere cause its on back 4 blood. An already dead game. Once I get used to video editing and polish in other areas as well I'll move to more well known popular games but wont stick 100% to that game. I have dreams just like anybody else but I also don't want to compromise. This KZbin thing is a huge time commitment and a huge challenge I'm willing to take head on.

Great video! Thank you. I started a gaming channel about 4 months ago and am starting to get traction. You did a good job explaining many of the decision points Ive encountered. Regarding niching down, I can see now what my audience wants, but I don't want to pigeon hole myself. So I'm spacing out the "desired content" videos and filling the gaps with other things I like. My thinking is it's a trade off in growth now in order to create a channel I'll enjoy working for in the future and long term. Also, thumbnails thumbnails thumbnails. Im amazed at how much a difference they make. Update to a good thumbnail and what was a dead video blows up within hours.
@vidIQ2 жыл бұрын
Glad things are working out for you!! This is just my very personal experience, but for me, that "trade off" you mentioned wasn't really balanced/fair. Every video I made "for me" (the ones I knew wouldn't = growth) seemed to do more harm then good. They were signals to my audience that it's ok to ignore my channel from time to time. Again, just my personal experience. Perhaps you've found/are working on a way to balance that out. Good luck!

@ScottyGG2 жыл бұрын
@@TheADProdigy Hi! I appreciate the question though maybe I just made a good video or two. We'll see in a few months. :) That being said things seemed to pickup after I figured a few things out. vidIQ taught me to spend a lot of time on thumbnails and messaging before you even start making the video. Helps keep things on point. Second, be active in the comments. Helps keep the video alive and creates a personal connection. And third be knowledgeable and authentic. It's easy to tell when someone's passionate and making content to share something rather than just hoping to get clicks. I was originally more of a variety game channel, but after literally this video and thread I thought they're right. Not only is it bad to keep my audience wondering what I was about, it also steals time away from creating content for a subject I'm uber experienced and knowledgeable and passionate about. One look at my channel and the difference in videos is obscenely obvious. :) Hope that helps. Good luck.

I really wish that KZbin would fix the pages on channels. Right now, all public shorts, livestreams, and videos are jumbled up under one tab (on computer at least). It would be extremely cool if they made a tab specifically for videos (that would look just like the videos tab now), one dedicated for shorts (that would bring you to a shorts player), and one specifically for livestreaming (maybe it could look a lot like a twitch homepage). It would also be really cool if each creator had the ability to enable or disable these tabs. That way someone who never livestreams doesn't have to have a blank livestreams tab and same goes for the other two tabs. On top of that it would be perfect if the creator had the ability to order these three tabs as well. So if a creator was exclusively a livestreamer, they could put that tab first even before videos if they wanted to.

I wish their was a daily trending tab for shorts , where ppl could scroll through them and as they liked them they climbed the ladder .

Your long-term games/short-term games thing may not apply to everyone. Yes, hoping on trends is important for your channel but just because that game may be popular for that one day and suddenly dies out the next doesn't mean that you should just stop playing it. You may have passion into that particular game which is very important. Having passion inside of what you love doing, so it's gonna take a bit longer for some people to gain there community this way especially if they have passion for something outside of these long-term games but it will be totally worth there time and energy that they put into it! Because it's that person's choice worth or not to become a full time gamer. Besides that tho amazing video!! 😊❤
@franky_saint2 жыл бұрын
I've never believed in focusing on just one game or genre. I'm currently focusing on Legend of Zelda and DOOM (despite they are not trending) because I like them and can't afford to buy EVERY brand new, trendy Steam title that gets released. But after I finish those games, I plan to move on to something else as well.

I think in the aspect of choosing the video game or games, choosing a popular franchise game will be the best way for longevity; because then, after people start getting tired of the most recent release, it's only a matter of time before the developers release a new title for the franchise, and get people interested again. Small gaming content creators who got into the bandwagon of games like Fall guys and Among us, can attest to this

Logically I think it comes down to supply and demand. I don’t think you necessarily want to play the most popular trending video game if half the world is playing and live-streaming that game too. What you ideally want to do I would think, if you want to maximize subs is to find a game people want to watch that is just not covered for some reason by creators so there isn’t as much competition. A bonus is you love that game of course.

Thing about my gaming channel is i dont do "lets play" type of vids, or review mods, or play in mp and show random gameplay, everything i do is created by me. I create mods, compilation lists, missions and tutorials. It helps to be well known in a community and have been in it since the beginning for me 22yrs, imo if you want to get anywhere in a game then you must put your focus on it play it alot, be part of a community not just another member, if you want to stand out then you need to be a part of that community. The thing that is important especially when it comes to tutorials in my community is you have people that create tutorials like myself, now i understand that people move on, quit or just not interested anymore but thing is if you create a tutorial and people ask questions it only helps your channel if you answer those questions. You need to go out of your way to be there for people that ask it dont matter if they are subbed or not when people see that you respond and care about your work and answer questions in detail if need be, and take the time to do so then their perspective of you is different then when you give a quick little half ass response. If you dont make the time, then neither will people coming to view and see your channel.

This comment is a bit late since I'm starting to actually research this stuff for a channel my buddy and I are starting up, but the first mistake I've noticed new gaming KZbinrs make is that they all think the Gameplay itself matters. It doesn't. Unless you're a professional competitive esports player or someone that makes game guides, 99% of the time nobody is going to watch your content for what's happening on screen. People want to watch you for you, not the game. Too many small gaming KZbinrs put a focus on the gameplay with mostly silence when that's just not what a general audience wants to see. People don't watch Markiplier for his gameplay. People don't watch Game Grumps for their gameplay. Nobody watches gaming videos for the gameplay. If you have a fun personality then you'll eventually be able to build an audience. The Gameplay is nothing more than a background for YOU.

Hey Dan followed your previous advice for this channel that I created at launch of mario party superstars on Oct 28. One month later in december I hit 450k views and over 500 subs. However I am declining now as you mentioned in this vid. I noticed my videos kill it when getting suggested but its when YT starts promoting them more in browse features that they quickly die and it has prevented my channel from really taking that next leap forward. I was just about to start doing my thumbnails differently and your example in this vid of that pivot seems to have validated my thought process. Let's see what happens. Thanks for the continued guidance.

I don't play trending games. I play short shelf games that have already been played my countless content creators. Games such as Alien Isolation, RE2 Remake, Metro 2033 Redux, Rage 2, Minit, Yooka-Laylee, and Horizon Chase Turbo just to name a few. All of these games and more were claimed by me for free from the Epic Games website. There's nothing different or unique to my style of making videos and that's why (after 6 1/2 years and 2.7k videos on my channel), I only have 1.23k subs. I haven't uploaded a video for a month and that's going to continue until I can come up with a new approach or say goodbye to KZbin. I'll have an answer in a few more months.

I think Sea of Thieves has that long lifespan and will be my main focus but I really enjoy creating content for different games aswell. Still trying to find my form. Would you say having doing one main game with regular uploads and streams, and some more random games in between could work?

So I make short videos (generally under 1 min), and I am wanting to make longer videos (around 10 mins). Would you recommend doing that on a new channel or on the same one I upload on now?
@thenerdcauldron2 жыл бұрын
Hello, random other gaming channel butting in to answer lol. always, always, ALWAYS build on your previous content instead of starting from scratch over and over again. Your newer videos may draw more attention to you as a whole, so it may bring an audience to your older videos as well. Plus, it's much easier to manage one channel, and your audience will be thankful they don't have to link hop a billion times to see all of what you provide. That's been my experience, so I hope that helps! -Lyric

Quick question. If you're collaborating with another gaming channel, how do you contact them and do you take the potential gap in subscribers into account? Like say a channel with 80 subs wants to collab with a channel with 500+ subs... Is that ok?
@vidIQ2 жыл бұрын
I'd say that the last thing I worry about is the gap between channels (in terms of subs). Instead, I'd be looking at view counts if you're factoring numbers into your decision at all. What I'm *really* focused on though is my relationship with the person I'm collaborating with. It's important to have good chemistry and goals that align.
@DonGEX2 жыл бұрын
@@vidIQ Thanks. I've seen smaller channels not even attempt to get in touch with larger-ish creators because of the stigma of the smaller guy leeching off the big guy.
@MangaCrash2 жыл бұрын
I think the main thing is just to try to talk to them. I've collabed with people with 5K, 20K, 90K and even 250K subscribers throughout last year and all of that was before I even reached 1K subs. The main thing is that the channels cover similar topics and that everyone has fun in it!

@@fcocean2860 For asking people for collabs? I just interact with the youtube community in my niche and eventually I get to talk with people who are bigger than me, once the person knows you it's way easier to ask for a collab and you may even be asked for collabs too by channels smaller or the same size as you.

another tip: if the game you are playing is on steam and you own it, connect your video to your steam account under that game. then it will come up in that game's community section and the media section that pops up when you scroll down from your game in the steam library. never thought my dusk video would get so much attention from that.

Any advice on this scenario? Gaming channel, decent enough sub count. But started the channel on gaming animations for a particualr game, as you mentioned the game died down. Have done other games in the same platform in between but mostly the other game. I have had 3-6 months of only doing a few videos because of time. But now going to get back into it and have it all planned out. My question is do I keep the current channel and change to gameplay videos from animations (still in the same niche) or start a new channel just for game play? As when i post gameplay they do not do well. I know when you change format of the type of videos YT will take time to get that infront of people. But do you say post normal content and then slowly introduce game play videos (perhaps 3 normal animation videos to every 1 gameplay) as a slow introduction? Or ??

For Indie Games, I had a horrible laptop, that I simply can't record any good games without lags, so I took on Stranger Things 3: The Game... I have made an entire gameplay walkthrough for the game using episodes. That didn't work, and I only had some little views like 8, 9, less than 19... And out of no where it started to gain more until I hit thousands of views, that brought some ppl to the channel. I honestly recorded in a very noisy background and horrible voice quality, but it worked anyways... So my advice is pick a game and stick with it for a while, you never know when it starts to trend Good luck everyone

@vidIQ2 жыл бұрын
The Minecraft audience likes a lot of things. You need to consider the types of players your tutorials cater to and then test out other types of videos you think they'll enjoy! A lot of this process is trial and error.
