Airlines do not have to prove their competitive pricing practices are financially sustainable like other industries do. For example, if Chevrolet began charging $5 for the Silverado, Ford and Ram could take them to court for price fixing to eliminate completion - that is anti competitive and illegal. If Frontier charges $1 for a flight from Denver to Orlando, that is completely legal, even though they’d lose about $10K every time the flight occurred.

One interesting and entirely unmentioned factor that likely will substantially affect the probability of startup airlines success is how they can address the massive pilot shortage in both the United States and abroad. Ansett was not the only full service carrier in Australia when they collapsed, they had strong competition from Qantas who just five years earlier had merged with TAA. You also didn’t mention that Virgin Australia started as a low cost airline and it would be almost 10 years before they went ‘full service’ which many would argue is where they went wrong, as they were now marketing them selves to have the same quality of service as Qantas, which they were never going to properly achieve with their infrastructure.

Ansett was not the only full service carrier in Australia when it collapsed. Qantas was always the full service competitior to Ansett on domestic and internaltion routes. It also pre-dated Ansett.

To my layman ears this sounds exactly the same as breaking into the ISP market, and the utilities market. It takes immense amounts of capital and luck to get into any of those markets, and it takes the big guys having to focus on something other than you while you get your footing.

The skybus clip (14:00) caught me a bit off guard. I grew up in Columbus when that airline started and flew on it a few times before it collapsed.

Wow I didn't realise how big southwest had actually become. I can't really imagine the new airline displacing them. They have a pretty solid reputation now as a reliable, low cost airline

Maybe this is Sam's way of rising the capital needed to start his own airline (it's only a matter of time), by showing potential investors that he knows what he's doing
