So I got my mower back and I'm not impressed it doesn't start without a shot of ether anymore doesn't matter how I choke it I'm not happy any ideas! The plugs and stuff are good on them! Lol they changed the carburetor on it and it's like it's not choking at all anymore! As soon as I give it a little shot of ether it fires right up on a half second burst into the air filter! Lol

Any words of wisdom on replacing the drive belt on this mower. I love my S240 and it just now started having trouble going up steeper hills. Do you think it’s the belt or transmission slipping, pulleys, etc?

How many hours are on the machine? The simple, (1)check for sticks or anything caught up in the trans belt area, (2)pull the hydro release rod in the back near the hitch out then back in. (3)You will need to release the transmission belt tension but after you do that, check to make sure the plastic Idler pulleys are not seized. (4)Make sure tire pressure is correct and (5)mower deck is not packed full of wet pack grass underneath as it will ad extra weight to the machine and if tire pressure is low it may feel sluggish. If you have major hills on your property and if you tow a cart (heavy loads), that will put much stress on the transmission. If your transmission belt and pulleys look good, replacing the belt may not help but it is what I would do (6)replace belt and idlers) to confirm your transmission is failing.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines awesome recommendations. I will do all of that. It’s got 185 hours on it. In the last few weekends, I have been loading and pulling a cart some? This last mow, however, I made it up a hill then next try, it labored, then I had to lean way back in the seat to get weight on the rear, the last try, it didn’t make it up the same hill in the same spot. I ran out of time to check out everything you mentioned, but I will. Great mower and I’ve been using it on property for 6 years now. I’ve kept up with all the maintenance and runs great. I’ve had to change a couple spindles, blades, and throttle cable because a branch broke off the orange handle next to the choke. I’ve had to weld some on the deck. I just lost the small chute spring and replaced that too. Thanks for the insight…when I get back in two weeks to where this mower is kept in Arkansas, I’ll knock out as much of your recommendations as possible and report back! Thanks for the video and reply.

It almost sounds like when you said you had to lean hard to one side to make it go. That is telling me the rear wheels may have just been spinning loosing traction. That would make it feel like your transmission is failing. Keep an eye on the rear wheels next time up the hill!

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I leaned straight back in the seat to get more weight on the wheels equally. I ended up rocking in the seat to get up the hill, whereas before, it would motor right up. It’s a good grade, but nothing unsafe. I’d only always go straight up and never sideways. Thanks again!

I've had my S240 for 8 years. It's a great machine, but there have been a few problems. 1st, the gas gauge broke after the first year. It always registers full now. 2nd, the seat safety pressure switch is WAY too sensitive. I bypassed that altogether. Next, the safety switch on the brake that allows you to start the mower broke as well. It wouldn't allow me to start it at all, so I bypassed that too. The reverse mow safety switch is just a real pain in the butt, so that had to go as well. Overall, I love my mower, especially after bypassing all the garbage the lawyers make Deere put on it.

Just ordered an 2023 s-220 with the tlt 200 transmission with 22hp Briggs and Stratton. Do you think I am better off with the 240? Just ordered Friday and the dealership hasn’t even called me about payment so I am sure that I can switch. The 240 is $400 more. Thanks

I do not know the difference between them both as I’m not a John Deere salesman (who would know the differences). I would suggest talking to sales rep and make your decision based on what the differences are. I can say, so far from what I have seen, they are both good mowers. It all depends on how you treat them and you get what you pay for.

NO! Do not mix oil with the gas. Make sure the engine oil is at the correct level and use straight gasoline in the gas tank.

@Johnson's Small Engines what's your imput on those reverse controls? I had a cub cadet, and man, it just drove me crazy. But evey thing is all about safety these days.

Just like all the other safety switches that have come along. You get use to it and then it’s like second nature. At least for most of us. If you really don’t like it, Cub cadet tractors have a better set up. I still like the John Deere’s just because I think there better built than the cub cadets. Remember Cub Cadet is actually MTD and MTD was the poorest, cheapest and in my opinion the lowest end product back in the day. They have been better but I still don’t care for some models.
