Thanks for posting this video because it reminds me of the old school vibe of you talking from your old classroom. You're still the best online resource for teachers from all experience levels. I cant wait to see the video on transitions. I teach HS social studies and my hardest 2 minutes of class is getting students to shift their focus from our bell ringer to the vocabulary for the unit. This is especially difficult since this is my first year at a school with 55 min classes. I was spoiled for 2 years with 100 min classes and now I never feel like I have enough time to cover our lessons.

I have written the objectives on a 12x18 sheet of construction paper, and I use magnets to indicate which objective we’re learning about each day.
@ea1420 Жыл бұрын
I’m so glad you noted that the obsession with the objective on the board isn’t useful. My admin, like many, require objectives for every class each day on the board. It’s pointless.

Are you all required to write out the entire state standard?
@candacestone4049 Жыл бұрын
We used to be required to write out the state standard, objective, and something else that I can't remember.
@ea1420 Жыл бұрын
@@CJReynolds Luckily we are not, but I teach multiple classes and I need a daily objective for each class. I would cry if I needed to add the state standard as I teach a subject that doesn’t have dedicated standards and so I’m usually borrowing standards from social sfudies, ELA, etc. I have a single white board, which the projector goes to, so I can never write anything else on the board. I just went to a training where we were told the learning objective needs to be on the board so the kids know what they are learning. My kids never read the learning objective. Ever.

We have to write the objective as well, so I just write it in student-friendly terms. I teach a career education elective, so no one is running around checking my standards and objectives anyway.

My daily agenda is always written on the board, but I also put a slide on my Promethean that repeats the agenda along with a timer and any special announcements for the day. I also have a meme because we all need to laugh. I’ve set up a First Five routine for the beginning of class so that we can begin on time and set the tone for that day.

@CJReynolds I am a Consulting Teacher (CT), one of 6 in my county. CTs are regular teachers that receive a district invitation to step out of their classroom for 3-4 years to work exclusively with new teachers. New teachers who do not have a degree in education. We help them lesson plan, teach in their rooms, explain classroom management- modeling just about everything. We share your content with them and encourage them to explore your videos. Thank you so much for having real life content. You are great! 😄

I have been obsessively watching your videos for about a week now and ordered your book yesterday. I'm in my 2nd year back in the classroom after being home with my kids for about 15 years and it's been a little crazy! I'm in Philly too, so i was even more excited to learn you have been teaching here. I'm getting so much out of your videos. Sometimes i worry I'll never get to this level of consistency as i have adhd myself and i have to really be on myself to stay on track. Gotta keep trying though! Day 2 tomorrow, woo!

Oh my god this was so helpful, you’re a lifesaver. Last time I commented on your vids I was out teaching overseas in Korea - now I’m back in the US and running an afterschool art program! Turns out I love teaching and decided to stick with it, but I struggle a lot with classroom management and fatigue. The part where you said you try to avoid answering tons of questions by having the basics written out on the board is SO insanely helpful, idk why I didn’t think of that! I can’t wait to put this into practice, thank you!

Great tips! I teach high school art on block schedule and we usually give a 5 minute break in the middle. I started putting at the top of my posted agenda the period start & stop time, the approximate break time, and the time students may start cleaning up. It has reduced a lot of annoying questions. I also sometimes post when lunch is. :P
