Welcome back! Today we're looking at starting a British army for the Peninsular War! I ramble even more than normal, guess I just missed you guys being away! I'll be doing a French one too, so keep an eye out for that! Cheers, Tim

Thanks for a first class guide. I’m looking at starting a Peninsular project and your video gives loads of helpful information.

Nice video mate. Glad you said that Talavera was one of the bigger battles! Interestingly the 2 flags in the Perrys box are both Sharpe related. 33rd was his 1st regt and East Essex is the closest you'll get to the fictional South Essex (yellow cuffs in Essex).

I just want to mention, if you cannot get the Perry Army Deal (import taxes/high shipping), the going with the 4 Sets of Perry Infantry the set of Perry Officers and a box of British Artillery from Victrix is a good starting point as well (goes over 100 but this is compensated by not needing the 2nd artillery from Perry for the next 100 and having a 3rd gun that can be build as howitzer) and keep up the good work

Great point!

From my own reading (also collecting the 3rd division), the 74th had their kilts taken off them in India as they were deemed unsuitable for the environment, and so they didn't have them when they arrived in the peninsula. Information on trews is a little harder to come by but the earliest depictions I can find are 1850s, so possibly introduced after the Napoleonic period. I think bonnets or shakos with normal trousers or even trews would be fine if you really wanted to do those. As you said, bonnets would quickly fall apart with the rigours of campaign but I have chosen to do mine as Perry infantry with bonnets I pinched from a spare victrix highlanders box for a unique look. Interestingly, pipers were paid for directly by the colonel of the regiment and so it was at his discretion to decide the uniform - my piper is of course wearing his Scottish skirt!

My favorite series of videos from your channel. Thoughtful and most helpful to new Napoleonic players like myself. Thanks for another great outing!

Love the new video, always look forward to your uploads! Recently got the french brigade deal, and when I ordered I asked if it would be possible to get a specific artillery crew, and they kindly obliged. I reckon that anyone wanting peninsular colonels/guns could ask for BH106 (colonels in bicornes), and for a gun crew in stovepipes, and Perry's would probably oblige. Might save a few minis from decapitation haha
@andreaspersson56393 жыл бұрын
Can confirm that it's possible, I did exactly that. No need for decapitation :)

@@andreaspersson5639 That's good to know, thanks! Hoping to start peninsular brits once I've finished the french so I will probably go with Perry's again then.

Firstly; welcome back! Well, you could not have timed this better! Got myself the WG Brit Peninsular Starter Army a couple or three months ago for my sins... (wish I'd discovered Perry's earlier but still happy enough with the figures) got it on a deal under sixty quid instead of eighty... winner. Hope I'm not imposing but not painted miniatures in over 30yrs so on a very steep re-learning curve! Army Painter paints are good, but finding contrast paints are a big help for my low skills... any thoughts? Few other things if I may; I'm painting up the Union Brigade which comes in the box as the Inniskillings with "Greek" helmet - was gonna do the campaign from 1811/12, so I'll need another box of those so I can use the Tarletons for the earlier part! Also; I'd like to add light Dragoons as you suggest, plus some Hussars for variety, BUT in the larger unit sizes than you suggest, would that be a problem? Lastly! (I hear the sighs of relief) painting Hussars: any tips on getting the braiding looking good without the use of an electron microscope and microsurgery brushes!!! You have a fantastic channel mate and can't tell you how helpful it's been, it's my first "go to" when I need no-duff gen. Take care, regards Phil.

Great series of videos. As someone who lived in Sheff for a few years, I got a flutter of nostalgia when hearing about Outpost and Wargames Emporium

Yup, cheaper than warlord too for us Americans, and they can be in firing line too. Not to mention that they have cavalry so you can have a small unit attached to your British cavalry

Good guide. I would have gone for the Victrix arty, 3 cannons with limbers, peninsular stove shako option, good value imo and they get their own bases even if they combine well with Perry's.
@NapoleonicWargaming3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Because you get a gun in the deal, I thought having a total of 4 would be a little excessive! But they are a fantastic set, and if I was expanding the army, or willing to increase my budget, I'd absolutely recommend them

Great video and info. I'm just starting to get into Black Powder....from an 11-year absence from Warhammer. Always saw Napoleonic wargaming as somewhat daunting, but always wanted to get into it, these videos have got me right on track. Just waiting for the delivery of my first Brtish Line Troops now! Thank you and keep on going with the content!

Just wanted to thank you (I think) for this video. Had drifted away from wargaming - hadn't painted figures in 20 years / wargamed in 13 years. Saw this video and was hooked - sold my AWI and Ancients and now have Warlord Games figures for the "Fighting 3rd" and the relevant French - now for the painting :) ps I went Warlord Games over Perry as Dice & Decks are currently doing the British and French Peninsula starter armies for £62.90

The Terrible part here in America is the paint itself. I've been away for years and you have to compare your old colors to new colors that match.Who makes figures now? Are they good? What scale?Its all a labor of love so to speak.❤

brilliant video ! i'm doing the Light Division so the only plastic i'm using is the Perry Light Dragoons as attached support , when i get around to cacadores i might use the Wargames Atlantic plastic box , nice looking models . i used Brigade Games for my 95th Rifles because the WA weren't available yet . if i finish the Light Division i may use this video to do the Third , they seem to have been close to each other in many battles .

For Perry Miniatures wargames emporium in Sheffield is the best value with all boxes at £16 which makes them under £20 when counting postage…

Can you make one about some smaller nations of the napoleonic wars like poland or bavaria? Really like these kind of Videos. Ceep it up👍
@andreaspersson56393 жыл бұрын
Having one small battalion is only accurate for the 3rd, both 2/5th and 2/83rd were quite small at Salamanca (2/5th were then folded in with 1/5th, but 83rd remained in the field for the rest of the campaign) The Perrys do have colonels in bicornes. If you talk with them, they might be able to replace them (that's what I did). And same for the artillery. If you're pedantic enough to care And in total, this is very close to what I'm currently doing, so I can't exactly say it's wrong :)

Hello! I love your videos. I was just wondering: do you have any of the pub battles Napoleonic board games. I recently ordered the Waterloo one online and I'd love to hear what you have to say about them. ( If you have any of them. If you don't, that's understandable)

Is 8 models for Calvary for a regular unit size the generally accepted number in BP? 2 ranks of 4? What is considered small 6? Two ranks of 3? I am knew to BP and was wondering about this.

I started peninsular British about 3 weeks ago. I bought 2 starter armies for 100 pounds, they will be 4th div at salamanca. Can you maybe do a video about how to start confederation of the Rhine or duchy of Warsaw? What do you think of the Vistula legion set from warlord? ,Thanks!

leave them at the store . You have to pin metal heads to the wrong dress plastic ones . Buy them from Murawski instead

Napoleonics only look intimidating. All the necessary details are molded on the minis, which makes it easier. What I might suggest is getting a rules set called "Song of Drums and Shakoes" by Ganesha games. It's a variant of their Song of Blades and Heroes fantasy skirmish game. You only need about a dozen figures on a side, so you don't need to paint a whole army (that often seems the intimidating part). And you can later add these figures into your army if you want (re-basing if needed). The rules are simple and games are fairly short.
