I first learned kenneling when I trained a Springer Spaniel for hunting 35 yrs ago. Where ever we went he had his own little cave. At night I laid my coat over the crate and he was at peace. I also used the word kennel when ever I wanted him to get in something. I could point to the car twenty feet away and say kennel. He ran over and hopped in. It’s very important for their safety. Now my chihuahua loves his little crate. It’s in the dining room and he can sit inside out of the way and see everything going on without getting stepped on.

I crate trained my dachshund puppy. Best decision ever. I followed this advice /info. 1) Dogs do not like to mess in their sleeping area. So I bought a medium size crate, which at the time was big for a puppy. Giving them too much room in the begining can result in.... pooping in one corner, sleeping in the clean side. So I halfed the crate space with a barrier. Still enough room for my puppy to stand, turn around and sleep. I took her outside to pee, potty and run around every couple of hours. Yes, also at night. To my surprise...after a few days, she let me know when she needed to go out. I followed this routine for several weeks, then little by little increased her crate space as she grew. Today I have two happy dachshunds, that love their crate for down time. I only lock their crate at night and when I have to run an errand. They get plenty of outside and couch time. They are spoiled....love my dogs. I just don't like them in my bed........!!

I love your common sense! We just got our 5 week old Boston Terrier puppy Rose a few days ago, and we had the cage crate with dog bed set up before we went to get her, and she went right to it! But now she wants to sleep and snuggle up to us all the time. I do want for her to be crate trained and I agree with all of your reasoning. With the puppy chewing, potty incidents, and for her safety when we need to sleep or leave her alone, I want her to find it a comforting place to be instead of a punishment. Thank you so much for all the tips. So helpful and I can't wait to start training Rose!

After having 2 Bostons, I've found it's also easier to train them as they tend to be incredibly smart. They can pick things up very quickly. The drawback is that they are incredibly smart and thus tend to get bored easily. Smart bored dogs frequently result in trouble.

Hi, thanks very much for sharing your knowledge. By collar, do you mean a sonar zap, or a citronella? I have a good old Boston that loves the crate for sleep and rest. My 4 yr Cavalier On The OTHER Hand, will howl / scream to ask us where we are going, or can I come with you? I have tried so many things. I seriously don’t think it is separation ANXIETY, but rather (I say he’s not a Cavalier, he’s a Party Animal!) a where are you going? Can I come with you? If I yell to him, Not Yet, or I’m going to store etc., he quiets down. Please give me some hacks! I think I might’ve taught him this, by introducing the sing command too early. He was just about 10 weeks and never understood. My other Cav learned the command in 10 min., but he was 6 mo. Mercy, Dusty can be soooo LOUD, I’ve decided to call him Rooster, cuz this is what he does everyday at 6 a.m.! And also the other times. He’s my 4th Cav, but I’ve had many other breeds over the years. I trained my Boston, to do all sorts of things when I was just 10. I’ve had 3 Bostons, and I guess they can spoil you. Oh well! Back to the books, so to speak! Any suggestions? Be blest. ☦️👩🏻‍🦳🐾🐾

Nice! All dogs should be crate trained! And as far as stuff in the crate it depends on the dog/puppy... if they don’t tear it up or use the bathroom all over it I would have a bed or blanket in there. If they do mess anything up they get nothing (sounds mean but It’s better than them ingesting something and needing an expensive surgery and/or dying)....
@constellations9258

@@thedawghouse4674 I have newspapers and/or wee wee pads in the crate, and blankets near the far end............my pup's still not wee wee pad trained, so she does tear up the newspapers and goes potty on them.........but it's better than when I let her out and she decides "go potty" on the den carpeting, etc..........I end up scrubbing, washing, etc. but she can be very destructive and I don't want her tearing up the house.........she's already ripped some of the wallpaper from the kitchen and the bathroom which I'm trying to neaten up...........I keep her on a leash when she's out of the crate, as I can choke up on the leash, as she can jump all over my cat, eat her food rather than her own, and make a mess............thanks for answering............love my pup but I knew it would be a lot of work too..........though probably not this much work! She has toys, etc but she's terrible about jumping and nipping, seems like most things go in her mouth..........even the power towels I'm trying to clean up with!

My Boston took to his crate right away. He never cried once, which I can't say for my pug. After 7+ years, he still goes in there when he wants to gnaw on a toy or just get some alone time. We lock him in there when we go to work, but only because we can't trust him with our pug for long periods of time. Once in a while they get on each others' nerves and will fight a bit. She gets locked in the kitchen. Our crate is about the same size as yours. We have a nice thick, soft blanket for him, a water dish, and plenty of toys. He's pretty comfortable in there.
