It will be eight years in July that I purchased my Generac 5500. It has never failed to start and never let me down. Clean fuel and make sure you start it up once a month for 30 minutes.

The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

Yes they can be, make sure you are using 10/w30 for winter to help the engine spin faster upon start up.

​@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I do, I insulate around the gen. and it's in an enclosure. It may have been just a bad winter in Pa. the first year I had it (temps way below normal). I want to design a solar warming system for the winter. Thanks for the reply.

Mine stays in my garage in the winter and I run a space heater I also use the royal purple synthetic 5w-30 no problems but it doesn't get that cold here in nc in the winter by the beach lol

How would I drain fuel? Haven’t ran mine since the ice storm 2010 on KY.

There is a fuel line that goes from the tank to the carb. Take the end of the line off the carb and put it into a spare gas can. Turn the fuel on and it should drain out. If the line is gummed up, you might have to take to fuel valve off and drain it straight from the tank.

hi, when i open the fuel valve, it starts pumping fuel through the carburetor. do you know what it is?

If you mean it starts leaking through the carburetor and onto the ground? You have a bad carburetor, due to fuel going has inside it. You will need to rebuild or replace the carburetor.

Does anyone have a problem with these generators kicking back and about tearing your arm off? I have gone through four handles that have broken when it kick-backed so violently. My sons won't even start it for me anymore because of the kickback. Now I have to buy a recoil unit.

You may need valves adjusted or possible cam compression release has broken internally or possible sheared flywheel key.

If you checked all steps before starting and it will not start, you most likely have a carburetor issue due to gas going bad inside it. You should diagnose it first to make sure. I am picking up a Generac generator this Monday 12/26 and will make a video on how to diagnose and repair a no start condition. Most likely it will not be up on my channel until the following week.
