This seems like a lot of progress for a devlog 0. I've been thinking about trying to make a 3D open world survival game and I don't know whether seeing this devlog has scared me about how much there is to do or inspired me to get started

Well if nobody else gives you the push to give it a go... TAKE A CHANCE AND GO FOR IT! Keep a big picture of the Final Game in your head, but don't rush the process. Break down each system into easy enough to understand chunks and take it step by step. I've been learning more and more as I go and I realized you sometimes just need to be okay with the level you're at and work on what you can until the breakthrough reveals itself naturally. Then one day you wake up and realize that HUGE Mountain of a System you wanted to make in the first place was made up of a bunch of cute lil Rock Solid Components. Now you've got a cool game and one hell of a journey to remember

Hello, I am doing a school project about programming and game development, and your protect caught my attention, so I would like to ask you this 3 questions: What is the thing that inspires you to make video games? Do you think visual programming is a valid option? In your opinion is it valid to use other people’s code in your project? Thank you.
@anbagames
@anbagames Жыл бұрын
Hi, you've chosen a cool topic there ;) I'll try to answer your questions: 1. It's fulfilling and fun to express my creativity and create things that evoke a certain fascination, which I myself have experienced as a player in other games. 2. Visual scripting is, in my opinion, a valid option. Blueprints in Unreal Engine demonstrate well what can be achieved. However, other engines have also developed good solutions for it. If I have the freedom to choose and can also code, I would always prefer coding - but that's just my personal opinion. 3. If I am allowed to use the mentioned code legally, it works well, fits my project, and saves time, then definitely, yes!

ngl. I hate open world games. Nobody has made a good one. When I say that im sure there is a million things you could say, before you do. I want to target "OpenWorld" and not the video game. For example, BOTW does a fantastic job as a game and even with open world.. But i just hate that its not linear, games designed as open world titles feel so shallow and I think that no one has innovated enough. So if you are set on it being open world and wont budge on it being linear.. Please go get a whiteboard and take this fantastic project and please tell me some new idea to make the open world-ness feel really engaging. Or at the very least cut out the first 30 minutes for a linear tutorial-section you can skip as I'd love a hand-hold option for casual players. Super dope gaame and lovely progress keep going!
@anbagames
@anbagames Жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from, and I agree with the part that open worlds always come with certain problems - and as you already said, there are no exceptions. However, one can try to design the player experience in such a way that certain negative aspects are overshadowed. I was able to play BOTW for 100 hours without getting bored. But I agree with you - once you've cleared a part of the map, there are few reasons to go back. I will definitely put a lot of thought into it! Thank you for the comment :)

@@anbagames see, that's what always bothered me about mmorpg games. Its so easy to maintain a playerbase, all they need to do is put high level dungeons in low level areas and some elite monsters on the maps, it'll create a flowing state where people will constantly be seen. And it creates variety for players in general. As for backtracking in single player games, puzzle action games and metroidvanias do it the best. I loved how certain areas required a switch to be pulled or a dialogue on the other side of the map to trigger an area to be unlocked on the other side. Primal (ps2) and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are one of my favorite games ever. More games should look into backtracking and making the player visit areas multiple times, instead of going a map by map format go 1st map 2nd map 1st map 3rd map 1st map. Something like that.

@@anbagames yeah! I think just having a variety of good and different spells is a really good start! Fire, lightning, ice, healing etc.. (kind of like magic in Skyrim and other Elder Scrolls games) but more thought out. Better fleshed out to be an upgradable playstyle where you can rely on that solely. It would also be cool to see some new directions in magic such as maybe poison, invisibility, telekinesis etc.. something that is also very important is to use cool animations to portray how "otherworldly" the whole concept of magic is. Flashy colors, various special effects and such!

Awesome stuff man, lots of progress for your first devlog. You have a lot of talent and I think your process is solid, especially with the experience you have. Some unsolicited advice (because I learned this myself), is be careful how much you lean on your inspirations. Its always a good starting point. But you will need to figure out how your game differentiates itself from Zelda game design concepts. What is going to make your game special? Rather than trying to make a Zelda copy-cat. Because ALOT of people are trying to do the same thing you are right now. If you want it to be successful and to stand on its own, explore that ideology as you continue to develop. Stoked to see how this turns out man!

I gave you thumbs up for the idea and maybe making it simple for even kids to play and on wish list but may regret that i’m sure mostly due to your comment on puzzles they are the number one key to no replay ability and this is why most puzzle are just too hard to replay and more of a pain in the game when a good story and combat and simple interactions to everything makes a good game. "SO IF YOU WANT MY VOTE YOU WILL GIVE ME A POST THAT YOU EVEN are thinking about this type of issue found in a lot of games that i end up playing on time by force just to finish it but due to how poorly the task is to do the puzzle or how they really make no sense to the story of the game that i hate the game afterwards BUT WHATEVER, post me that you have seen this if you want more info or a subscriber. I will save this post waiting for your response to my post okay from steppingstone gaming site or GamenRage! Thank you for your time.

Issue # 1 Time missions: with games of this type like a lot of games have these timed situations that make it more of a pain to even re-play once you have got past through anger and aggression to just have fun has been drained out of the replay ability of the game. Thus getting bad reviews. Issue# 2 Over the top high pace gameplay that gives the player no real break in game play and is used in every situation. What we want is fun pace building games or action games that do not use aggression in every situation and instill anger into the player that just wants to have fun and win the game not stressing out every minute over high volume button learning games that you need to push just to defeat an enemy or hidden leveling up systems that make no sense, that should be more basic and easy to understand and know without some kind of hidden secret.

Congrats with a successful 0th devlog! Here's an unsolicited advice to consider: Are the devlogs meant for other game devs? Or for your potential audience? When you spoke of the story/setting of the game, you still talked about the functions and roles of things, like saying The Isle of the Ancients will "serve as a tutorial", and next you talk about "learning the basics" and "finding the core items". These things are interesting to a game designer, or people who hold those interests, but not necessarily to a player. It's a good idea to consider if this is intentional, or if you want to change your video wording style (when talking about story or what's going to be fun about the game) towards something more like "you will face increasingly difficult challenges and gather equipment to help you discover the secrets of the Isle of the Ancients", without being explicit about "tutorials", "basics" and "core items". A lot of people who watch your devlogs may be your first wishlists, so consider appealing more to the players in your viewer base as well! /unsolicited-advice-over
@anbagames

That's a very good point that I haven't actively thought about so far. Devlogs have primarily had the individual effect of providing me with motivation, but I also enjoy talking about the progress of my projects. It makes sense that I should consider the target audience and different roles, although I haven't actually done so yet - so thank you very much for the suggestion. I follow 1-2 larger German channels that have found a good balance between being technical and appealing to the "player" audience. I think I need to give this more thought and adjust the script accordingly before a devlog.

Great Devlog! Are going into detail in the devlogs on how your mechanics work? Like the climbing - is it procedural or with fixed points? I would love to hear how you tackel stuff like climbing, movement, combat, etc. Are you giving an insight on what assets you are using?
@anbagames
@anbagames Жыл бұрын
Thank you! :) The next devlogs will definitely be more technical and focused on a few topics. There's definitely more to come regarding the movement and combat system! Currently, climbing is achieved using raycasts, taking into account the character's viewing angle in relation to the wall, the height of the target platform, and whether there's enough space for climbing. So, no fixed points :)
