I am now sixty. I have loved block printed fabric, cards, framed prints since I was a teenager. Finally going to dive into this. I like how it involves design, drawing, carving, printing and that I can reprint a design over and over .

In woodcarving the dominant hand is the guiding hand and non dominant pushes too. You have discovered on your own the secrets that you would have learned in an class or apprenticeship. Well done you!

I had made one linocut using the soft stuff years ago but did not do any others because I struggled so much with it. I used an ancient mustard yellow speedball set I bought at a thrift store. After watching your video, I tried again with the hard type of linoleum you recommend and it was great. Although I already had the speedball set, your Amazon list made buying a few other supplies easy. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Aw man the non-slip liner is such a great idea. I've stressed my hands out over the years from holding on to my blocks, especially doing crowded detailed areas. But I can second the recommendation for the Flexcut Slipstrop! It's super easy to use and has kept my basic Speedball Linoleum cutters going strong during hours of detailed carving. I've used it with more expensive tools as well. The wooden spoon is a classic for transfer and I'd never heard of using a candle lid for a barren! That's so clever! I get all my linoleum from Blick Art Materials (the pre-mounted blocks) and it's been a life-saver in getting me back into the art. I've bought paper from them before as well. Stonehenge is always a solid go-to in both the fawn and white. Though if you're on a tight budget/don't have a lot of material availability the Mixed Media "sketchbooks" from Canson are also incredibly solid for smaller works. I didn't hear it mentioned so another tip for beginners! For printing plates - if you have an old picture frame with glass in it - remove the glass, tape up the edges with painters tape and that will work fabulously for mixing/pre-rolling your ink before applying it to your block. Plus it's super easy to clean and even if your ink dries on it you can use a razorblade to scrape it off. I've also seen a lot of artists make miniature stamps using Rubbermaid erasers which is incredibly cheap to buy (especially during back to school sales). These are super cute and even if the "print" doesn't work out it doesn't feel bad cause you didn't waste a lot of time/money making it.

Woodcarvers use a blue tape made to protect from cuts. Super cheep and can be wrapped on whichever finger/knuckle you’d be likely to gouge. It leaves your hands freer than a cut proof glove, which is another option - especially for young carvers.

I remember doing a Lino cut in my 7th grade art class (my teacher was pretty cool lmao) and really loving it despite the fact that the linoleum being pretty low quality and hard for my little child hands to carve. I’d really like to try again so this video is super useful!! ❤❤❤

When did you upgrade to flexcut tools. And how did you ever learn to keep tools sharp. I'm having trouble with the sharpening and keeping the cheaper cutting blades tight as I cut (they want to rotate out of handle). Thanks for all you do and yes, I saw your "comeback" video. Cheers and welcome back. Art is the way forward.

I was trained to do woodcuts and linoleum seemed to not accept fine enough carving. I found that if I froze my Lino blocks, I could carve really fine lines.
@illukace9 ай бұрын
I've been able to get some great detail in lino, but wood is superior for fine details for sure. My designs and my art style is more graphic, so it works well for me -- but not for all! :)

Hi so I guess you'd usually plan to either roll out a tiny amount of ink or plan to make several prints the same, to use it up. It's good to see you doing curves, as I hope to use moose as my first time! I'm Canadian but watching your video from England!! What's your top tip? My small baren arrived today.. I treated myself - but a small kit is coming next week. Any suggestions for colours? I am hoping to avoid the typical bold standards... I like browns, moss green, mustard/deep yellow, not bright etc.. thanks for the video. I am Casey :)

Thank you, thank you for this wonderful vlog. I have been wondering what my next challenge should be. And you've helped me find it. I'm aging myself but the last time I made any kind of print was a wood block print over 40 years ago in high school. I'm sure I did do linoleum also but I just can't remember. I have a question though. Do you clean off your block in between prints, or at the end of a print making session with anything? Again thank you for this. You've gained a new subscriber today. 🥰
@dragonflower1719 күн бұрын
Typically you keep inking your block during your printmaking sessions and then you'd clean it when you're done with that block for the day. When you finish your last print take some scrap trash paper (notebook paper, etc) and press down a few times to get off as much ink as possible. What you use to clean the block will be determined by whether you use water or oil-based inks! Never submerge your block because it can cause warping. Water-based > Soap and water with rags or paper towels Oil-based > Vegetable oil (or solvent - less eco friendly can be harsher) with old rags or paper towels If you have any old t-shirts or dishrags that are no longer suitable for use they are great for cleaning during printmaking! Happy crafting!

Have you ever considered wearing gloves to protect your hands? Not sure what gloves would work best but there are a ton of protective glove options. Maybe "crafting gloves" would be a good glove. They support and protect you hands. So if your hand muscles get sore they would help your hands go longer before they are too tired plus more protection from skin gauges.All while being thin enough to not be cumbersome.

Excellent video. How long does it take the ink to dry?
@ChickenScratch-Feathers2 ай бұрын
It depends on the brand and type. Oil based inks typically take longer to dry than water soluble inks... I'll give them a few days at least if using water based, just as a precaution to be for sure it's dry enough before heat setting! I've never used oil based, but have heard it can take up to a week to properly dry.

The speedball value kit is £40 here in the uk and that really isnt that great value but if you want to get started its a good solution. One tool with three tips and not the 5 or 6 you usually get, 1 block that youll likely end up ruining if youre a beginner and a small tube of ink. The brayer is good though. Overall... im not buying the VALUE bit. The Deluex kit is a ridiculous £85 here in the UK.
