My MG winter strategy: Germinate in a damp paper towel in a ziplock baggie for 2-3 days in the dark, fill some jello shot cups (puncture a few holes around the bottom sides of the cups, plant the germinated seeds shallow) with worm castings, put them under a grow light in a tray, and water them all by watering the tray so they get their water from below not above. When they start growing normal leaves after their cotyledons, move them to a 1/2 gallon pot where they will live for the winter, and DIY some trellises that fit the pots with wire coathangers and string.

I soak my seeds overnight like the package says. Then plant in big pot-( one package seeds per pot) . Mine are actually on the north side of the house, but get a bit of east and west exposure. Climb the trellis that holds the roof for our front door. I save seeds but sometimes buy new ones. I saved a lot of purple ones about 4-5 years ago and they still sprouted. Have you notice that the purple ones tend to over take the other colors? Like germinate faster and crowd out the others? Mine do.

I have just learned that a lot of leaves means that your soil is too rich. Morning Glories, surprisingly, like poor soil. I had a healthy crop of leaves last year with some nice blooms but my friends from India where these are native, grow beautiful plants with lots of blooms, in the worst places. Live and learn. They are not high maintenance.

Thank you for that information. I just purchased my first package of Morning Glory Grandpa Ott seeds today to place in my pollinator garden. I was surprised that only one plant, at 4:33, grew so large. I was wondering how many plants to have in one container. Looks like only one will work just fine. Will a regular tomato cage work as a trellis or will I need to add an extension to that? I'm in zone 6b/7a with a last freeze date the same as yours, so I'll start my seeds next week.

Thank you for the informative video! I purchased your seeds and they are blooming just as pictured. However, I would like to know if you supplement the growth with any fertilizer? I assume low or no Nitrogen? Do you pinch the tips to create more bushy plants? Lastly, what is the largest blooming variety you grow? Please make more videos showing the varieties you mention.
@farocean111

Morning glories love phosphate fertilizer. I put a link of bloom booster flower food in description. I do pinch the tips to create more branches at the beginning. But they can grow branches by themselves as well if you don't pinch them. Many Japanese varieties have 5-6 inch flowers. The largest one I grow is "Peach blush". Those huge flowers are as big as my face :)

I live in Chandler Arizona and it's warm here. Is it a good time for me to just plant them straight outside ? Or can I just put the seeds straight on to the soil outside? Which is best for this weather? I was told to start now but I have done that in the past and don't succeed. 😭

I love my morning glories! it thrills me see my harvest of seeds this year, my first year of taking it really seriously.. I wish I could post a picture comment to show my fence, It was a pretty big display. Did you know the seeds contain LSD-A? I harvested about 80g worth of seeds , a nice fat envelope, and going to hold for next year to plant some, and hope I find a link of a pharmaceutical company making microdoses out of the useful drug element :D

A bit unrelated, but is it normal if they flower at a very early stage? I planted some Japanese morning glories a few weeks ago. Currently, they have 4-6 leaves and I can see small flower buds forming at the very tips. I was surprised to see them because they're still so smol

Plant in paper cups, morning glories do not transplant well, you will set them back if you plant in plastic and disturb the roots.

Was it's foliage too much? Your soil could be too rich in nitrogen, even if there's a good chunk of phsophate.

I'd like to know if they can handle direct afternoon sunlight...? We're in zone 7b where it's hot and humid. About anything we've tried to plant on the west side of our house burns up due to heat intolerance. I know that Morning Glories like full sun and they'll produce more blooms if they have direct sunlight, but that afternoon sun can be brutal. However, anywhere that gets morning sun is shaded by lunch time, so I worry that the east side won't give enough light. Anyone have experience with these in several hours of direct afternoon sunlight?

I have planted red-whit-blue morning glories but they failed to produce any flowers, though they've grown above my garden fence. Someone told me i made a mistake by fertilizing them several times. They said I only encouraged the plant to more leaves, instead of flowers. Ia that right? Now It's the end of August. Maybe they will produce flowers but the first frost will be arriving bin a few weeks. I set out some traps and a caught one rat (I live in the city). Two nights later I caught the culprit who was eating my zucchini--- a young SKUNK--he caused an uproar and a smell that reached my neighbors, I didn't have the hearty to kill the poor thing -- finally my son was brave, took a broom handle and opened the trap. The poor skunk did not spray again, but merely looked a bit dazed before shooting out the back gate and we all laughed! I called the Dept. of Natural Resources and they said that small animals like raccoons and skunks feed at night--and some carry a dangerous virus that is spreading westward from the forests of Pennsylvania. So beware and wear gloves and wash you hands!
