Very nice guide. Perfectly laid out on what to get first and where to go. Thank you! Though I'm surprised you did not touch at all on the multitude of player mats out there. I've seen so many but can't seem to find one that matches up with the core game. I suppose I can figure it out, now that I know that a lot of what I'm seeing is for expansion packs. And this made me laugh, you kept saying "improve your quality of life" for the extras. Not sure I'd go that far, but they would certainly improve my quality of gameplay. :) Thanks again.

Thank you for the comment! I didn't cover player mats because I couldn't get my hands on a good big one for Arkham! I definitely want to get one soon though! Also "quality of life" is a common phrase used in video games (mostly MMOs) to basically mean more pleasant to use or easier to use - I used to play lots of Warcraft XD

Seems nice that it's cheaper to get more than just two players to play with one core set as well. In my opinion the best game from Fantasy Flight with the Lovecraft license. Eldritch Horror is fine, but drags to much, same with Arkham Horror Third Edition.

Since some of the mythos packs are hard to find at least here in Finland is it possible to play them out of order or skip some of them? For example is Miskatonic museum required to play The Essex county express?

Great question! So basically....it probably wouldn't work. The reason why it wouldn't work is because some of the later Mythos Packs require you to use cards from previous packs in the same cycle. Some of them would work for sure - but some wont - so it'll be kind of a gamble. You can always try and see how it goes with the missing cards I suppose

How does this compare to the board game? I played the arkham horror third edition and I personally think it wasn't a lot of fun after clearing every scenario. It just felt like infinite dice rolls. The card game does have a better reputation tho. So how do these two compare?

Cheers! Yeah I've seen Arkham games with 6 players! Just know the core set only has enough for around 2 players (the new investigator starter decks would help with that though!)

I think everything I've played is excellent - I'm really liking Circle Undone so far as it has a much more supernatural/ghostly vibe than Dunwich. I just bought all of Dream Eaters so that'll likely be our next campaign (I'm still trying to get all the packs for Carcosa too >.

I like the theme of TCU but I've been warned that it has loads of passive ongoing effects that you have to keep track of and that not making rules goofs is particularly mentally taxing in that campaign. But sometimes I find criticisms overblown. Have you run into issues with that in TCU compared to TDL yet, or do you think that complaint is overblown?

I guess it depends really. You could get a scenario pack to have another complete story (but no investigator cards), you could get some investigator starter decks (I recently did a review of these!) or you could just pick one of the campaigns that looks cool and buy the base set for that :)

Yep, you're allowed exactly 2 unless the card has the "myriad" ability! The starter set even suggests decks that has 2x of some cards

Yes and No - the Core Set has a complete 3 part story. Each major expansion box has only the first 2 parts of a larger 8 part story (2 in the box, 6 as mythos packs). You'll need every Mythos pack to experience the complete story for an expansion.

Nope, you can play with the investigator cards immediately (as long as you have the xp to use them in your deck of course) :D

I don't know if you covered this in the video but when you buy the corset do you take the same deck that you built for that scenario and use it for any of the expansions? Or do you build a whole new deck with a card in the expansion

You build new decks every time you start a new campaign - then upgrate the decks with xp you get during the campaign. You can use any card that you own as long as you have enough xp to put it in your deck (you start with 0 xp when you first build your deck)

Hi from the UK, i purchased this quite a few years ago now and played a 'Skids' deck from the box a couple of times at a local group working our way through the Dunwich campiagn- I had to leave due to other commitments and just starting to look at the box again with aview to playing solo so your video was most welcome - i understand that the rules may have had some 'errata' revisions so would i need to buy a core box again do you think?

Not really, all of the different investigators, scenarios and deck builds make each time feel really fresh. You can definitely build your decks to play very differently from one another

Nice video! I’ve been meaning to play Arkham Horror for a few years now but never got around to it. This is super helpful for anyone looking to get started. Have you tried any of the Return upgrade scenarios? I was curious if they would be easier to get into than the full expansion cycles.

I'm very glad the video was useful! Since publishing this video we've gone to finish Dunwich, several standalones and we're nearly done with our first run of The Circle Undone (we'll be playing Dream Eaters next :D). I *did* buy Return to Dunwich (mostly for storage) - we haven't played through the new cards yet but I think it's likely best to play the original before trying the Return to upgrade scenarios (especially since you'll still need the original expansion and mythos packs anyway). Buying a Core box + the Return to the Night of Zealot could be an easy way to get several campaigns in without having to buy a full expansion - though you will be sorta limited on player cards and deckbuilding options.

@@PixelCodex its because the core set, unlike every other product, only has 1 of each class player card (decks can have a max of 2) so to be truly optimal in deck building some folks suggest 2 core sets. I don't think its required. Personally I'd rather buy expansions and mythos packs to get new content AND new player cards - plus the new starter decks planned later this year might have those core set player cards anyway.

Hm...Investigator decks would certainly help! Just by virtue of jumping into a new cycle (Dunwhich Legacy for example) you will get the cards that come in the box set as well as new cards every new Mythos pack. I'd recommend just buying the whole cycle all at once so you have a bunch of investigator cards to work with as well as the full cycle to play through.

The typical campaign uses less than 20 chaos tokens, so if you're on a budget you can get away with only using 20. :) With Innsmouth there's actually A TON more though with the addition of the curse/bless mechanics

Hm. The first 17 minutes talk about the core set, expansions, mythos packs and standalone schenarios - only then do I move on to other ways to enhance your experience. After I talk about the extra stuff I explicitly say its all extra and reiterate my initial suggestions a couple times.
