I write numbers on my cups to keep track of what is in each, plant date, germination date, etc. That works great for smaller garden with lots of variety, like mine. I like the camera work 😁

This video is helpful for me. I started growing orange pumpkins from seed in a small plastic container with a wet cloth towel at the bottom. Maybe I can have a mini pumpkin patch this summer and fall. I will let you know how my pumpkin plants do.

Using the last average frost date as a guide: you need to gauge the current weather and weather forecast, as well. If winter seems to be going later than usual, than you want to wait for 2 or 3 wks (at least) after the last average frost date to put out frost-tender plants like tomatoes, peppers, and cukes. Some gardeners recommend waiting those 2 extra weeks regardless, just in case. PS - Agreed about not transplanting plants 2-3 times. Something that took me about 3 yrs to figure out: start in a bigger pot, then that's not necessary. PPS - I've never used an innoculant, and I always have an 80%+ germination rate (often 100% as long as seeds are viable).

I’m very new to gardening, like I just planted some seeds yesterday. I thought it was going to be easy and I just had to throw some seeds in dirt😜. What does “last frost date” mean? I live in clovis ca.

Hi James, can you please explain how you made the leaf compost? How long it took to become ready and how you treated it? Thank you! I love that method because it is so ready available, it does not cost anything and so simple! Learning from you all kinds of things :-) Thanks again.

James I really like the detail you discussed about Black Leaf Mulch and Happy frog soil . That will be my plan in two months It's now 1/14/22. Another great training . I am at such a Dilemma deciding what and how much to plant.... The issue is that I converted my grass yard to a Permaculture Wood chip base November 1, 2021. I do not know if it will be ready for planting veggies. ALSO , the trees will be fine . I hope soil conversion happens in 6 months . What do you think??? Hugs for Tuck😁

@illinoisduderanch32896 жыл бұрын
Great video and really like your set up. Started my tomato seeds and 90% germinated. Started them in flats with heating mat and bottom water. Will need to transplant into bigger cups soon as the 2nd set of true leaves are starting to grow. With all of the cups you have for starting seeds, how long does it take you to cut those holes in the bottom of all those cups with a razor? That has to be quite time consuming I would think but I like the idea of being able to reuse those cups for several seasons. Thank you for the video, very informative.

Is it okay if you just direct sow in the ground or a container? I would like to grow tomatoes in the late spring because I don’t really have a lot of light in my house that would grow plant well. I don’t mind getting a later crop. It just seems better than constantly transplanting plants. I also live in Jersey.

Great video again ! ! One thing you could do to make it pop more though.Video the close ups of your hands,the cup,the window separately(and more closeup). Then edit them into sequence.I'm not if you can do it without having to narrate over the top though.

Will my grow light work in my house. I want to use 4 full spectrum 40 watt bulbs in 2 totes? With clip lights to keep them around 2 inches away from seeds
@rlopez18m2 жыл бұрын
So for your leaf mulch, you just throw leaves into a bin and it decomposes naturally? Do you stir it? Do you add anything like water at all?
@titanart62252 жыл бұрын
Good day James, I have a silly question, is there a time that is too early to fill containers with your container soil mix or fill new raised beds with your fresh soil mixture? If I’m over a month from planting outdoors (zone 7a), will the soil life loose nutrients and minerals essential to the plants by filling the containers & beds too early? Should I wait just before planting season to put fresh soil in these containers & raised bed or is okay to fill them early before planting season begins in my zone?
@charronfamilyconnect6 жыл бұрын
Can you add fully composted sheep manure in my indoor starter plants pots or would that be a contamination concern? Thanks!
@jamesprigioni6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t add that until the plants had a few true leaves. I know it’s fully composted but any manures can be to “hot” for young seedlings. 😁

Great video.... I want to start seeding for the first time, I live in sunny west Texas temps are already close to 80 degrees. Do you recommend that I start my seeds outside? Should they still be covered? How often should I water them? Thank you for sharing
@stevieM826 жыл бұрын
Hi James! With those last seeded trays; don't they need light to sprout? Or is it ok to place them in the light once the seeds have sprouted? Good job on the filming from your brother! 👍🏻
@calhoun19686 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is nice with a camera man at times. I'd suggest getting a small and a medium soil blocker, no more cups and less stress on the seedlings. www.johnnyseeds.com/tools-supplies/seed-starting-supplies/soil-block-makers/ Great video James. Peace, Love and Light my friend!!!

3:23 So are you saying there is mycorrhizal fungi in the soil or no? Really couldn't tell!
@michellespear66616 жыл бұрын
Is there a reason people don't use topsoil to start seeds? I know it can be heavy, but with a mulch garden, mine is light and fluffy, even though the underlying soil is clay.
@christianhansen32926 жыл бұрын
CIAO James so what kinda bugs exist in your garden i wondering besides ants and the praying mantis u transplanted? do u feel they all have a place? if i had the mantis i am thinking the yard lizards might get to them! i take the seeds directly to the soil thats probably wrong.

Whats frost date
@jamesprigioni6 жыл бұрын
Last expected frost date is the last day that it is expected to get below 32 degrees or below freezing. If this happens and the moisture level is high enough susceptible plants may be killed. So it’s important to know that date around here so we know when to put our transplants outside 😁
