For starting seeds in a south facing window I bought a couple cheap 48 inch mirrors from Menards 2 2 inch pinch clamps on each one for legs. The mirrors behind the plants gives me more light and straight growing plants. I also started sprouting my peppers on top of my 180 gallon tropical aquarium with a LED light above. They start to sprout in 5 days instead of 2 weeks.

So glad you mentioned the fan, a lot of seed starting videos don't. You can bury peppers deep like tomatoes, too. I start mine in a south facing window every year, do one hard pruning, bury them deep and get fantastic results. I like all the solo cups, looks a bit like my living room right now. 😁 Great video, James!
@lisakukla4595 жыл бұрын
I really love your method here, but man, you've *gotta* try a soil blocker. It's one of my few prized posessions. You've got some really fantastic tips, especially the trick of using the good soil only on the top of the cup, and that germination station is still one of my favorite things. I can't wait to make my own when I get someplace permanent. I'm sure you're familiar with the soil blocker, and if there's a reason you're not using it, I'd love to hear it; I truly admire what you've created and your opinion is one I know I can trust. Thank you for doing what you do. I learn so much from your channel, and I always leave feeling invigorated and inspired.
@brianahood88985 жыл бұрын
Lisa Kukla I was curious as to his reasoning for not using a soil blocker as well. Possibly labeling? Maybe it would be harder to keep track of the varieties.
@lisakukla4595 жыл бұрын
@@brianahood8898 Yes, perhaps, but I don't find it more difficult or time consuming at all. Do you? I can think of a few ways I could make labeling more difficult or complicated with the soil blocker, sure, but I don't see why labeling would completely keep someone from using it. It comes down to how you set up your system. Anything can be figured out or "smoothified." Especially considering the astounding results, and not to mention the elimination of plastics. It's always exciting to encounter another soil blocker, though! I do think word is spreading. 😊
@brianahood88985 жыл бұрын
Lisa Kukla Yes! It’s a wonderful method! I have seen on Justin Rhode’s channel that his wife labels them by writing on masking tape placed on the edges of the wood that holds the blocks. That seems very doable. Thanks for sharing, I think word of mouth can help as well.
@lisakukla4595 жыл бұрын
@@brianahood8898 I simply use wide popsicle sticks cut in half. I plant in multiples of fives, for the most part, so I just write the variety on the stick and slide it in at the top of the row of blocks in my 10"x20" tray. Each tray perfectly fits 10 rows of 5 blocks. There's so many possible ways to keep things straight. Cheers!
@brianahood88985 жыл бұрын
Lisa Kukla thank you so much for that tip! That sounds wonderful. I will most likely be using your method in the future!! Thanks again and enjoy!

My season is a bit too short here in Vt. to do it your way . I went down to my garden today for the first time this year and there's still about 6 inches of snow. Now I am crazy and I live in a 600 square foot house I have 62 tomatoes and 60 peppers growing indoors. I started them 6 weeks ago. They have already taken over the dining room , before I'm done we start eating out because we are out of room. I start everything inside and have 8, 4 bulb grow lights and 6 smaller ones. Four fans run most of the day. The electric bill only goes up about 40 dollars a month. People have told me I'm crazy , but 120 a year for lights is nothing for the amount of food we grow. with seed and the perennials I add every year I spend about 250 on the garden. Two of us are eating organic food year round with a 25 dollar a week grocery budget . So who's crazy ? So glad you and Tuck are back. I just love the inspiration and I can live vicariously through you for the next few weeks.

We transplanted beets, kale, Swiss chard and butternut squash back in January that we grew from seed here in AZ. Everything did amazing and we had an epic beet harvest today. Just planted tomatoes, summer squash, hatch, jalapeño and habanero peppers yesterday. God Bless brother and thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired via your informative videos. I usually soak my starts prior to planting with some compost and top dress with pulverized egg shells and either shredded straw or wood chips to keep the soil moist longer with added calcium. The worms love the eggshells and straw.

Trees are arriving tomorrow. Weds is planting day for all 11 trees and 22 fruit bushes. Cant quite do back to eden as it is someone elses property but am working on perennial permaculture principles and the owners wanted 'mini meadow' so sourced nitrogen fixing ground cover clover with alpine poppy and other same height wild flower seeds. That will be seeded this week as well after the trees are in. Raised beds, fit out mini greenhouse, revive old reg plot.... lots to do before the end of the month

What is your take on hugelkultur? Raised beds?
@jamesprigioni5 жыл бұрын
I believe they are great when used in the right scenario. In my opinion huglekultur works great on a place with a slope that gets a lot of water, especially if you want to get rid of trees like how Sep Holzer does it. But for me it isn’t that necessary, I get great growth growing on the ground. And I think raised beds are great if you are growing in small areas and want to grow just annuals and some perennials like strawberries and asparagus. I like growing a lot of fruit trees and I have a good amount of space, that’s why I like to grow on the ground. I may try a raised bed in the future to grow some things like carrots and other plants with deep two roots 😁

Air flow also helps inhibit bacteria from propogating in soil surfaces whichcan attack plant stems. BTW, Never touch a stem and bottom wTer only. I like to use a bucket to sink planters into until they stop bubbling. Assures complete watering.
