How To Start The Golf Club Back

Here's another tip on how to start the golf club back in the golf swing. I thought of this when a student recently came out for a lesson and I noticed he was really handsy as he took the club back.
This faulty takeaway stopped him from creating depth in the backswing. This lead to his club being laid off at the top. When you lay the club off, it can lead to an over the top swing causing pulls, pull hooks and pull slices.
In teaching him how to take the golf club back I came up with a memorable way to do it. You need to say to yourself, grip, setup, switch. That's it. Once I explained it to my student he instantly learned how to take the golf club back and it was so memorable that he did it for every other shot while we did the lesson.
What this tip and understand these things then apply it to your swing. If so, you too can learn how to take the golf club back properly allowing you to be in a great position at the top of the backswing.

hello I want to thank you for this excellent video. I saw him three weeks ago, but today he can go play. I put it into practice, for the first time in a round, the ease and how I recovered distance was incredible. I was somewhat depressed because with the driver it reaches a maximum of 200 to 210 yards of air and final distance 230 to 235. When before I had an average of 275 to 290 and sometimes reached 300 yards, in final distance in the farway. Today I reached 275 with the driver and others like it. Of course, in all the other clubs, the distances also improved a lot. I want to thank you, may God bless you, in one round, only two shots blocked me, for coming out with your hands, let the successes continue, very grateful, Caracas, Venezuela, Pedro.

There is no question, in my mind, that this is right. If I just turn the shoulders around my central axis I hit great shots. If I use arms in the back swing then I don't. The key for me is that I can tell immediately if I've used arms in the back swing, because I lose balance in the follow through. Paul is onto something taking arms out, for me it starts with the back swing. If I let he shoulders 'take my arms' in rotation not only do I hit the best shots I also finish in text book posture. This, for me also cures slice with longer clubs, not sure quite why, but happy enough it does. Following Paul's advice I'm getting more consistent. Happy days.

Paul, I am officially a disciple of your method and principles. Unbelievable results. One question - I'm pulling/hooking my wedges. I saw your video on belt buckle but I didn't understand how that was different from using my hips in the normal swing. Could you say it in a different way so I can have a lightbulb moment? Thank you so much.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support. I appreciate it. First, if you are pull/hooking wedges you have a grip problem. I haven't hooked a wedge in about 40 years. You need to be severely closed to do this. So start with the grip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIK9faNul6tgjdk Next, short clubs don't have you firing your legs hard vs. say a driver where you are trying to hit it 300. So if you turn your legs (motor) off what is your power source? No legs and you will hit with arms. This sends it over the top and you will pull it. If the face is closed through impact you will pull hook it. So check the grip. From the top absolutely turn the arms off and turn the belt buckle to get the body moving. Here is a great drill to practice to get the feeling: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJnYiKN6YpabrMk

You're the only one I watch on youtube for instruction. Thank you! This is very helpful as I get ready to ramp up golf for a new season! Great tips! One question. Where should my hands be in relation to the club face at address with irons? I've had my hands in front of the ball, creating a forward shaft lean at address, is that incorrect?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Thanks for following me. This is the right idea whether it's me or someone else. You need to stick to 1 technique and commit to it. Don't get your hands too far ahead. If so you can't do the neutral grip. Instead your grip will be strong shutting the face at the top giving you the false sense of hitting straighter or hooked shots. Have your hands even with the ball or very slightly ahead. You need to watch this too on how to get forward shaft lean: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH6XgItpopdgb5I

Mr Wilson, hello again, thank you very much for this very good video as I used to roll it on the inside in the takeaway and have a flat/laid off swing. I am relatively tall (6 foot 4) and have been told that having high hands is good for taller people, especially considering my swing is extremely flat. Is it worth me feeling as though my hands are very high (almost like Scheffler’s position at the top)? What are your thoughts on high hands at the top?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
I have see this many times in the past. Tall guys do a short guys swing. I tell them to use your height to their advantage. So coil it back. Once you get to 3/4 back you need to lift it up. Watch this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGS4fKJ_oLp9ask If you swing with a mirror in front of you (which you should do about 200-300 practice swings per day for 2 weeks) you should see the whole shaft of the club above your head. Too flat and your head will cut through the shaft. So the mirror is off of your toes. Swing back and watch the shaft. In 2 weeks it will be fixed then you will be hitting it an easy 30-50 yards longer.

Great lesson, love your videos. From the point of your hands being in align with your arm pit, do you drop your hands at that point on the downswing to get in the slot for a shallower swing?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it. Thanks. I am not dropping. I am just not hitting or helping with the arms. From the top you have 1/4 of a second to impact. As soon as you drop you will be at the ball so when are you going to fire the lower. There's not enough time. I have done this as a drill for a few people but in doing so they were super slow swings just to get the feel of not coming over the top. @paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. People make too much of flipping. I need you to purposely roll your wrists and get it hooking.
