I'm a believer in it's never too soon to start peppers indoors. I started mine in November and they're now 6 inches tall. I want full plants when they are transplanted in the ground. Planting this early, they can also be trimmed to promote branching long before they are planted out. I live in zone 7b.

I have used similar methods on perennials, houseplants and any roots that are tangled....I get a bucket and gently hose the roots so that I can pull them apart easier. I seed leeks, onions, scallions in one small shallow box so when I dig them out with my small trowel the bowl works great.

Great video on seed starting. I did a trial start on seeds earlier in the winter and had only mixed results using a seed starting heater pad but I'm hoping to have learned enough from where I did poorly, and from your video and others, to have greater success now since the hope would be to get the next set into the garden early April. I had really poor results with some, but not all, peppers, almost zero with asparagus from seed, poor results from some traditionally low germination plants such as spinach and carrots, but when those get planted in the garden I can plant great numbers of seeds. So, thanks for the great video; I'm hoping for better results for having watched it.

2023MARCH, back in Dec 2022 I got some seeds and put them in a wet paper napkin and then I put the napkin into a baggie, waited about a week and then I use the 2 cup method. I had a heat mat, and put the cups w/soil & seeds on top, and I covered each one w/a baggie. I got really good results, now I got close to a 100 plants, cucumbers, yellow & red bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, chilies, watermelons & cantaloupes. I save a lot of money by growing my own plants. At Home Depot or Lowes, just one plant is approx. $2.99. You got to be patient, use the 2 cup method, and get a heated mat and a space in the garage, like I did, and put up a florescent light fixture. It works.

i suggest sturdier commercial grade trays. they drain better, have root training ridges and are much easier to handle. almost all starts can go from plug trays directly into garden. re-potted plants have a much harder time establishing. besides that's a lot of mucking about with pots that take up a lot of space and need looking after. using sterile professional mix ensures good results and no damping off. i start my seeds in garden shed, with a heat mat for germination only, under a proper small LED grow light. It's too messy for inside, as they need consistent moisture and regular half strength fertilization, once they have true leaves. Starts grown strong with a good root ball transplant very well. i use a fog nozzle with adjustable flow wand to water them diligently. As the season progresses keep starting other veggies as well in trays, maybe even in the open when warm enough. dont think of just doing summer loving crops and that's it. carrots, lettuce, kale, beetroot and many others, should provide progressive planting and harvests. you get much more out of the garden than waiting only for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. try to get good commercial varieties of heat tolerant and disease pre-treated seed. these are usually far superior to usual sameness in box stores or heirlooms. i dont hate heirlooms but unless a proven performer and disease resistant, dont bother. early and late blights in tomatoes can and will wipe out entire crop in a week or two.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Sturdy for sure. Once the trays get filled and watered, surprising how heavy they get. We do a lot of plugs straight to the garden beds, but if its an extended winter, or if something like Garlic is still in the way, then they must be transitioned to a larger 4" pot. The big guys like all the nightshades don't really get transplant shock, so its no biggie. Cheers!

Sifting out large debris from the seed soil mix (e.g. coco fiber plus compost), is a good recommendation, as this would make the mix more appropriate (i.e. light, airy) for developing young plants. For sure. If your plants are ever long and leggy, it'll be for 3 reasons, or a combination of all 3. Either 1) not enough light (intensity, brightness, day-length, 2) the wrong spectrum of light, 3) poor air circulation and movement. Play around with what works for you and you'll find the happy medium.

Norm, here. Sir, great video! Question: I can germinate seeds like a wizard. Even peppers. I can grow my seedlings to wonderful plants for transplanting to my garden. But, that stage between germination and seedling with first set of TRUE leaves (not cotyledons), I struggle with. So many of my germinated seeds die. Some die of damping off. Too wet. So, I let dry out more, and a day later -- dead because the soil dried out. Online guides say to let the top dry, then water when needed....great; how do you know when that is? Top is dry, so I water, plants die of damping off. I DON'T water when top is dry, and the starter pod dries out and they die from lack of water. The soil does not dry out evenly. Sometimes one cell is dry and the next is wet!! So Frustrated! Guides also say to check moisture 2" deep, then water if dry --- that's a garden test, not a seed pot test! One site said to use a chop stick --- very silly. Another place said to use a moisture tester; again, o.k. for garden but not a seed starting cell. So, How Do YOU know when to water the cells after germination between the germination and seedling stage? Norm
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
That is 100% the key! I've been there man, I know the frustration. And it might not be straight up water. it could be the growing medium itself and how it reacts to water. New video coming out tomorrow that really might help with everything. I'll tell you one thing...Once I set a tray up for planting, I don't water it again until like 2 weeks (or more) AFTER germination. If the soil is drying out that fast, there's a problem. And I'm in no way drowning the seedlings early on to avoid watering.

Thanks Coco, glad you liked! I am in Canada as well (Victoria). You can germinate, propagate, and grow ANYWHERE...the plants don't care. As long as the right parameters of heat, light, moisture, air motion, and nutrients are correct, it doesn't matter where you grow.

Sorry to hear that Jackie....to combat the mold, you need more airflow. The clear tops should only be on for about a week or so past germination.

I viewed your series of videos (wonderful job) and I have a few questions. The tomato seeds that I purchased have an expiration date of one year. Why?? In your experience, have you successfully germinated seeds after the expiration date?? I have fluorescent (F15) lights, for plant and aquarium, approximately 11 inches over the 72 cell seed starting trays with dome. I planted Jan. 4 and germination started Jan. 15. I followed your instructions carefully, thank you. Can I turn-off the lights at times; or should the lights be on all the time?? Please advise.

Hey Richard, great questions. I have sprouted seeds WELL past the expiration date. Years past. But the companies have to put them on their, and most certainly as time goes on, seed viability goes down. For lighting, I do a 16 hour on, 8 hour off cycle. Plants still need the dark part to carry out life processes. Cheers!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks for your immediate response. I've been gardening since 2007 and can't and won't stop. I've been saving seeds since then, keeping and saving seeds from the first plant that produces a tomato or chile because I feel that it is the strongest plant of the batch, then carry it forward to the next season. Then from that planting, I save the seeds from the first tomato or chile, then carry forward to the next season . . . and so on. I've meet other gardeners and a lady passed me some heirloom tomato seeds (Cherokee Purple and other heirloom) and she told me to keep them in a tight-fit jar in a dark dry place. This is my first season starting seeds indoors; I've always planted seeds directly into my garden with the rich compost that I use from my compost pile. Thanks again for your videos, knowledge and effort. Feed the World, man!

Question, How do you correct lighting problems? I have a corner with two large windows where I place my plants to grow on shelves, but over the years, I noticed long leggy plants. Someone said that I should add more calcium. It does help, but still not the best.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lori, I haven't heard of Calcium curing low light. Really, the only cure for low light is more light. For plants like peppers and tomatoes, you can plant them deeper when its time to move them on. Right up to the first leaf node is just fine!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms That's what I've been doing when it comes time to planting my tomato plants because they are so long. I see other people who have beautiful bushy tomato plants, but not mine. The suggestion to add calcium never mentioned low light, only the solution to long leggy plants. How do you give more light to plants that are in front of two corner windows measuring 3 feet by eight feet each and there's even a third one, same size, to the left of those windows. I don't know how to solve this problem.

So, I had no clue what I was doing and planted a bunch of seeds in peat pots (little ones, like your trays), but they can't be watered from the bottom, and it's only warm in the room they're in for 8-10 hours of the day, and somewhat cool the rest of the time. It's been 4 days and our pumpkin seeds are sprouting, but so far I don't see anything else, and I'm not sure how often I'm supposed to be watering them since I can't just put water under them once. Have I already messed this up and how often should I spray the soil with water? I've been doing it just whenever the soil starts to look dry. (And I'm in Florida, the seed packets all seemed to indicate that I could start the plants I picked between June and September?)
