I would add biochar. Our sandy soil does not hold onto nutrients very long. But biochar does an exceptional job. Its easy and free to make. Just burn some logs until they are white, not ash, then add another layer. Repeat until many layers are done. Then add lots of water to extinguish the fire immediately. Once you have made the charcoal you can add it directly to the garden bed if you dont plan on planting in it until at least 3 months. Or you can charge it by placing it in a bucket of liquid fertilizer for 2 weeks.

Awesome! Thank Santiago for that screen of the recipe. He was like “you should put a shot of the recipe on one scene so folks don’t have to scroll through the video to write it down.” He deserves the credit there! Thanks for your support I’m glad this video made you feel super confident :)

This video was super informative. I have all of the weeds mentioned in the video. Or should I say, “had?” I personally used a tiller for my garden and so far so good, my garden is 25x25 and the soil is all fluffed up. Just waiting a few days to scrape up the few weeds that may spring up. Thank you for making this vid, will definitely be ordering the garden goodies from your store!

Daddy Dave watch out for the nutsedge. A tiller just breaks them into smaller pieces that will then Resprout and grow. Whenever we use cultivation equipment, we always wait a couple weeks to do weed flushes (and pluck nutsedge out of the ground with the digging fork). Makes wayyyy easier work after planting. 25x25 is a great size for a backyard. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment!

Hahaha! Weeding (no lie) is one of my favorite things to do. I get to shut off everything and just move through the gardening tightening up all the edges. When I’m done and I look back, it’s one of the greatest feelings of accomplishment for me. Some might say that’s sad, but for me, it brings me so much joy lol!

VERY COOL!!! Question: Would fermenting my own food scraps in a container or adding the probiotics from capsules have the same effect of the dried Bokashi??? I already ferment some of my veggies that I consume daily. I always have fermented liquids left over mostly from my beets and carrots from my ferments that I could use to get it going. Hmmmmm... Thanks for sharing.

The preparation video is great and I have done my share of preparation with my own compost but you didn't address my biggest issue - iguanas. Do you have any solution for these pests? My boxes are surrounded by a 36" wall of steel, so they can't set their nails into it. But that limits quite a bit of sun and prohibits some plants from expanding. Any suggestions?
@TreeAmigosGrowers
@TreeAmigosGrowers 4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, we did not go over iguanas in this video. Our goal is to create clear very focused videos so you can find what you want and hop off. Do you follow us on Instagram? We just went live Sunday May 17th talking about the easy ways we keep iguanas out (and in our experience you don’t have to build such a heavy duty wall). I’ll make a video about that in the future. Thanks for bringing that up!

Can you please approximate the cost per sq ft to prepare a garden area like this in the sandy florida soil. seems like it could be very expensive. Thanks.
@coryhyatt2035
@coryhyatt2035 7 ай бұрын
It can be. You could spend as much or as little as you want, with trade offs though. Just depends on how much up front work and time you have. I would guess with his method it would be about 60 bucks for a 4ftx8ft bed. But you could go and harvest a bunch of green manures and mulch heavily. Do that in the spring and let it break down all summer. Come fall your bed will have a huge jump start. Maybe plant some cow peas as a cover crop too. For a few bucks you can get a bag of them at the grocery store. I have done this many times.

Can you start planting immediately after applying all of these soil amendments? Or do you need to wait? Also I’d like to request a video covering soil maintenance!
@TreeAmigosGrowers
@TreeAmigosGrowers 4 жыл бұрын
You can plant immediately :) We recommend not waiting more than two weeks if you will wait. I didn’t show it, but I tried to share that after clearing it’s GREAT to let weeds sprout for the next one or two weeks before planting. Set yourself up so your gardening maintenance is soooo much easier.

It’s the end of our winter season, but the beginning of our summer growing season. Much different plants grow now than the rest of the year (think subtropical and tropical food plants). We have a link to monthly south Florida planting calendars on our channel page that we created while managing organic farms since 2010.

@@hoemendo3011 Im not sure whats good for central florida, but we have a link on our channel of what is good to plant here in South Florida every month. Right now some items include hot peppers, eggplants, snake gourd, luffah squash, walking onions, okra, pigeon pea, taro, malanga, and sooo much more for veggies. The calendar focuses on Vegetables, Culinary Herbs, Medicinal Herbs, and Multifunctional flowers. I dont think it would be super accurate for you. You'd have to use it as a reference to tweak since we are different here in 10b

No digging No soil prep ---- plant on hay. Try Ruth Stout no work method. or Build A Sunken Container Vegetable Garden to hold the nutrients in a small space. Soil nutrients leaching into the ground vs more for the plant soil intake.

As full time organic farmers, we’ve tried the Ruth Stout no work method on all different scales. Unfortunately, we deal with major persistent weeds that just rip right through hay bales, cardboard, and mulch. Once we beat the weeds for a few seasons by improving the soil microbiology, we go no dig
@imlew7853

@@TreeAmigosGrowers I hear you. Here in Central Florida, weeds forever even through my ground covered with 3" ht. - crushed #8 gravel rock over a geotextile fabric. Several Florida weeds can grow even in moist rocks. Wind distributes them around. We find sunken gardening so much easier to handle, more economical with satisfactory harvest. Air pruning pots vs fabric air bags is sooooo impressive. Such little pot of soil in relation to the plant size with healthy roots is witnessing a miracle. I spent more for air pruning pots but pays for itself. I placed it over a container with water for capillary action. It controls the moisture 24/7 vs shock from watering. No water wasted, easy plant feeding with least amount of work.
