I am a solo pastor at a small to medium size church. There are people who lead the "Call to Worship" and read the day's scripture lessons. However, when the service begins I am the one to welcome everyone there that day. If I know we have guests, I will introduce myself (your point 1) and then will proceed to introduce the sermon and its place in the series I am doing (your point 2). When it is time for the sermon, I may begin by repeating point 2 and then share a story (your point 3). Other times I will just begin with sharing the story. Anyway, thank you for sharing the tips you have found useful. I appreciate new ways of approaching the sermon. Blessings to you and your ministry.

Great video. Have you done a video on choosing sermon titles? Some pastors don’t give their sermons titles. Just the text. Why would you say it’s important and how do you choose them? I often mention the title at the end of my message intro as a bridge, “Which is why I’ve entitled this study ...” How do you use your title in your sermon intro? Do you mention it? TIA!

Great question! I have a video on topic, title and hook. It will probably answer your question. Thanks for watching and commenting, Angie!

Good video. I often like to open sermon messages with a question to build tension. What are your thoughts, in preaching through a sermon series, to do a quick recap of the journey of messages leading up?

Thanks for watching and commenting Nathan! Great question. Yes, very good approach to give the context needed so that your listeners understand how the message fits into the larger series. But, I still try to keep it brief.

The sermon concept was taken from Greek rhetorical schools in the 3rd century. Before that, Christians assembled and everyone had something to contribute because to each one was given a manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Mutual edification was the goal of the early church. In the 3rd century, clergy began to dominate all the functions of the body of Christ. The problem with the sermon is that it stunts true spiritual growth of every other member of the Body. One man does all the work, and the rest of the body in the assembly does nothing but sit passively. Since the church grows only when each and every member of the body exercises his or her gifts, the sermon deactivates practically the entire Body of Christ into a state of atrophy. The Body of Christ is currently weak. We have been weak for centuries but now we are in very bad shape. The solution is not more sermons. The solution is to back to the church gatherings Christians had in the first century.

Thank you for sharing this. I've never thought about this before, but it's true. The church according to Gods word should be a collaboration as you said. Imagine how much more engaging it would be to make the church members part of the service. It's sounds really interesting to me
