Video Summary:
We all struggle to focus at times -- some from attention deficit, some from stimuli overload, or from fatigue or lack of sleep. Without focus, the body at work becomes mindless and careless, and sometimes dangerous.
Ideally, we experience periods where we are so fully focused and absorbed by the task that we're effortless transported into the enviable and highly productive state of "flow." This optimal state creates high engagement, challenge and happiness. While "flow" may sometimes happen serendipitously, we can learn to set the stage to summon it.
The easiest steps to create flow are to eliminate distractions and interruptions, and then to work in time blocks of 60 to 90 minutes. During these blocks, and as much as possible the rest of the day, do only one thing at a time.
Other techniques for improving focus and getting into flow require a little more preparation, such as getting enough sleep and practicing meditation while concentrating on breathing.
We've spent too many years living in an all-access, 24 x 7 nonstop world, chronically trying to "multi-task" -- an unnatural and detrimental state for the human mind. Fortunately, with practice, the human mind can un-learn its restless habits and return to its natural state of excellence.

***** I have the same problem, but I started to do exercises to improve my concentration, so every time I become conscious of the random thoughts, before I pay attention to whatever I was paying attetion before, I focus 2 minutes on a random object trying to describe everything possible in it. If you do that like 2 times a day, you'll see improvements. You'll find it hard at the beginning because 2 minutes seem like a lot to look at an object because you'll get easily distracted, but it will help you afterwards

@Louis Gallant-Talbot Try it and see. I think you'll find that you're creating excuses for why you can't focus. If you can't focus in a library, the problem isn't the library, the problem is your noisy mind. Focus is developed by training up your willpower. Stop trying to avoid the hard work.

I was trying to implement that system and it worked so well and then I was so happy that I managed to get focused that then I started to get distracted with happy thoughts. It is really difficult to concentrate when your main distractors are your own thoughts.

You should try meditation, it helps you focus on breathing and let’s you clear your mind. Focus can be translated to reading, or writing, whatever you want to focus on basically. Also, I use a distraction journal whenever I do a boring task like studying or research. Whenever I am distracted, I force my focus on the work after writing down the distracting thought. Think of it like a net that catches whatever comes to mind that isn’t on the task at hand. It’s a good focus tool.

i am bad at stay focus since i am kid. my mind will flow away once i look into textbooks, i can lost focus in few seconds. after all these years i know how it affect my life, i seldom have achievemenst and feel bad about myself, can't finish everything completely, missed many chances, i can't even focus in my thoughts too, this lead to bad decisions. Now i am a grown up and every decision counts.i need to be more focus and clear mind. so glad i saw your video. The method is easy to start up and follow. i will start everyday from 30mins focus as 60mins is a bit hard for me, hopefully i can keep it up bit by bit. Thank you so much Leo! so in order to stay focused you need to....stay focused? good advice..... Okay maybe that's a dick thing for me to say and I don't mean to be a troll. I'm just saying your general thesis here is not at all what your title implies. Your thesis is not "here is how to stay focused." Rather it's this: "being focused is very important and if you just focus you'll be surprised how important being focused is." It's kinda like giving a depressed person advice by telling them to try being happy within blocks of time and if they do they will see how important being happy is...

K dude. All I'm saying is you really don't seem to understand this is a real problem. Take offense to that if it helps you out, but think about it more when the ego-crush clears away. I'm not trying to be a dick just for the sake of steeling your thunder, there is actual purpose in my commenting here, and I'm trying to be tactful about it, but, being someone who's actually struggled hard with attention and learning disabilities most of my life, your simplistic views of this matter sorta rub me the wrong way honestly. take it or leave it. I don't know everything. That's fine,

Yeah, and I guess I appreciate the thought, trying to help people out n' shit... It's not like I think it's useless to try and focus when that's your problem, it's more that this particular advice felt surface and a little condescending. but oh well. dudes trying at least. I'm an effing dishwasher so it's not like I can claim superiority here. idk. haha.

What's interesting, I was an Air Traffic Controller for 20 years, and in the beginning I remember trying to everything at the same time and yet not being effective and not really getting the job done. Then someone told me that you have to do one thing at a time, get it done and then move on to the next thing. Set all that up in the context of what are your priorities and I was able to become quite effective and very focused. Of course ATC is an extreme example that most people can not relate to, but if you slow that fast pace down to what you're talking about it makes total sense. Now I'm a movie producer and taking what's most important, accomplishing that, and then moving on to the next priority is still what I find myself doing...ATC, but at a much slower pace. I do like the 60 - 90 minute time blocks, this really will make everything more manageable.

Some extra tips: - Whenever you aren't in a complete rush for time (e.g. test taking) complete more difficult and creatively challenging tasks first. Believe it or not, this will substantially reduce the amount of time you will procrastinate, and you should get more work done. - Find out which time you are most productive (maybe you are either a morning person or evening person) and complete your most important tasks during the time when you are most focused. - Check your emails once (twice a day at most) either at morning or at night. Studies show that people who check their emails at random points in the middle of the day are more likely to become distracted and get less done. - Set reasonable goals and SPECIFIC deadlines. Some people are completely against a rock solid schedule, and that is understandable; however, detailed schedules can help those who are distracted very easily. - Reward and punish yourself. This one is extremely difficult, but it works for some people. If you are working towards a prize (maybe an hour of your favorite TV show when you're done with your work) or trying to avoid a punishment (missing a deadline and not qualifying for that promotion) you are more likely to get work done. - Exercise. Neurotransmitters released when you exercise can help you focus and even sleep. Also, you'll get into shape. Knock out two birds with one stone. P.S. Proper dieting can produce the same results. - Most importantly, SLEEP. I don't care if you think you can function with only a few hours of sleep or several hours of sleep. 8 hours of sleep at least is essential for optimum cognition. Various studies support this. Hope these extra tips help. I know they have helped me.

I saw results and i am so happy now i can focus more better and fast and all works which i want them to done are being done before time :) I am so happy sir and respects u.. that u are putting such great efforts to make us educated and aware about those others aspects of life which here in India our parents didn't & not even close ones or elders. For me I've added a couple of life hacks that really allow me to get into a flow. I've added a ritual to the beginning of each focused time that seems to really hep. When I'm ready to sit down and start working on my project I first light a candle and set my timer... Then take a few deep breaths and start the timer. May sound silly but for me setting the atmosphere that says its "my time" really helps me. Try it.

we r creatures of fun and enjoyment, so here goes my advice: love what you do, or find ways, tricks even to do the thing u gotta do in a way that you like. if you hate smth so much that u cant do this, then you probably should do smth else, maybe it's life telling you it's not your way. maybe it's time to find out your likes and talents. and when you like smth but it's too much new things to tackle at once and you are getting overwhelmed, then always start with the smallest part you can do of it, and advance gradually

Everything he said is extremely helpful. Ultimately he gave us different techniques and formulas to help us with being focused. But staying focused is like exercising a muscle. You are going to suck at it if you aren't constantly PUSHING yourself to get tasks done. Staying focused is primarily an act of your WILL, plain and simple, techniques can help us but in the end what makes us focus is our CHOICE to stay focused. At first you are going to suck, it's just like working out, you aren't going to be able to do a marathon at first. Have grace on yourself and PATIENCE. And know that over time, the more you PERSIST, the more you will be successful at staying focused and getting things done.

This is so true. Focusing is a matter of practice and it is a big issue of our present. The problem is that distractions are everywhere , and sometimes a distraction is not a vibrating phone, but also an urge to check the social media although you know nothing new could be on. Recently I've started with those 70 minutes blocks(which is a working interval I personally take) and it has helped me a lot. First of all it's helped me track my "real effectiveness". Because I can stay whole day at home studying and call it a "studying day". But how much of time do I really spend focused on studying?! Those blocks helped me identify that. It was actually surprising. For 4.5 hours of pure focus I did so much work for which I'd thought that would take 8+ hours. Yeah, 8+ hours with distractions. If you master at staying focused you'll eventually end up happier, more productive and with more leisure time! Thanks for this video, it is amazing! Best regards.

really like the simplicity of the light rays analogy! Makes sense why people are more productive just because the deadline is upon them, forcing them to focus more intently on the task... on a side note - ironic as youtube is a big distracting enemy but those of us here are hopefully on the path back to the productivity track. Thanks for this!

joey ruiz Check out Leo's video on procrastination. It sounds like you're procrastinating your attempt to focus by day-dreaming. When your thoughts begin to stray, put in some effort on bringing yourself back to center on what you are trying to focus on...if the thoughts keep straying, just keep bringing yourself back to center of your focus. Even if you don't feel like making the attempt, just try it half-ass to get started, as I think Leo mentioned in his procrastination video. I got a new job recently & every 30 minutes at work, I ask myself a question: Is what I'm doing right now going to make me a better employee, help me learn the work & the environment, increase my skills, teamwork, etc? If the answer is no, then I put myself back at center, realizing I've strayed from my focus & start focusing on the primary task from that question again. It's an uphill battle but in the long run, it'll pay dividends. One new co-worker was telling me he didn't know how I kept all these details packed in my head the way I do. I figure focusing on skill sets in my past helped with me doing that, because I used to have shitty memory!

Max En Lorenzo I used to play games in the morning before School. The problem isn't call of Duty. Its something with the school that isn't driving him to learn. I did just fine. Now a gamer can be considered a addiction, but then again it also is a hobby. You need to figure out how to balance it.

I'm definitely going to try this. Unfortunately I work in an environment where I have an enormous workload, have to answer all people at the door and phone calls, and all the staff come to me with their most random questions. Which is not an issue, I'm there to help them but it interrupts what you're doing. I noticed having one iPod earphone in helps a lot, I can still hear what's going on but get less distracted by conversations of people around me.

It's worth the watch however students I understand the struggle.. tip from video: break up your day into 60-90 minute blocks with no distractions and take 15 minute breaks in between, you'd be surprised how much you get done.

so true, turn off notifications and you don't need to answer your phone every time it rings, the important thing is to return the call not instantly take the call! The other thing about emails is to use a 20-30 second rule, respond if it's only going to take a few seconds, if it requires a longer response then schedule it in it's own block otherwise you'll get to the end of the 60 mins and have checked 1 or 2 emails!

I'm a medical student and my only job when I'm home is to study. I just can't these days. It's like an obsession.. I keep on getting the feeling that Im not allowed to study or make progress. TL;DR: How to stay focused? 1. Eliminate distractions. Ask yourself, what are the distractions right now that are keeping you from staying focused? Enlist 5 (hunger? your boss who comes in every 15 minutes? is it emails? is it twitter? is it your phone vibrating? is it your own thoughts? etc.) and then try to eliminate as many as you can. 2. Practice doing one task at the time (multitasking is the opposite of focus). It does not matter what task you choose, just set a small time frame where you will do just that one task and nothing else. For instance, washing dishes for (let's say) 10 minutes. Just for 10 minutes you don't do anything else but the task at hand (you don't check the phone, you don't walk away, you don't stop - for just 10 minutes [or whatever time frame you have chosen] you are simply and *only* washing dishes [or whatever it is you choose to do]. Maybe you choose to check facebook for 10 minutes, that's the task at hand. Maybe you choose to listen to a song, etc. Whatever it is, choose one task and a small time frame. After those 10 minutes are gone (or whatever time frame you chose), you can now stop doing the task and go ahead and do whatever it is you want to do now, whatever you were thinking about when performing the task (like grabbing a bite, or drinking some water, checking your phone, taking a piss, etc). Then repeat: choose another task (or go back to the same), set a small time frame and do that *one thing* for a little while, and nothing else. If a compulsive thought keeps coming back during your execution of the task, just tell yourself "I'll do that very very soon, in just a few minutes, but right now I'm washing dishes (or whatever it is you're doing)". Soon, you will be able to increase the time frame that you are able to stay focus on a single task. At last, just try to get quiet time and start a meditation practice. Keep repeating these 2 steps and sooner or later you will develop the ability to focus on whatever you want for as long as you want to without interruptions.

For me the way I'm focusing more is by thinking in the present and looking in the present. It's like a first person video game: skyrim, call of duty, etc. it's helping me a lot by thinking in the present and I'm getting better at focusing, plus everything doesn't seem overwhelming once you focus and think in the present.
