"If you're living the right life, you will be humbled by it." That's the key right there. When you aren't actually challenging yourself to get better, you're surrounded by ease, and you naturally decend into arrogance,

Just my 2 cents: if you want to learn real humility, do something hard and surround yourself with people who are way better at it than you. I used to act like I was the smartest person in the world; I was arrogant, condescending, and frankly just plain mean to people I judged to be less than me. That is until I studied physics. I learned otherwise real quick. I got my degree but I struggled for years and it really showed me just how complex nature is. It showed me how little I knew, and how ordinary and insignificant I actually am. I learned more than just physics, I learned my place in the world. The other thing that was humbling was being around people who were standouts in physics, who were just freakishly smart and talented. I had to learn how to rise to their level just so I could communicate with them and learn from them. Studying physics was a profoundly humbling experience because I had to work hard all the time to become good at it and I was constantly reminded that there were always people who were head and shoulders above me. Now that I know I’m not the smartest person ever, I treat people a lot differently these days, I act differently, and I have a lot more friends than I did before. That’s all I got, hope this helps someone.

Humility is a form of Grace. I know someone who is great at almost everything. If you tell him how great he is, he says, "I am just a regular guy" Clearly he is way more then just a regular guy, but he never judges himself against other people. He judges himself against himself. What are you working on? What can you improve? Plus people really respect humble people that are clearly exceptional. The truly exceptional people are always the most humble.

“…when pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2 I’ve been humbled before (pride)…and it was extremely humiliating. I couldn’t face anyone for a while and I wanted to hide, but I chose to face it. Eventually, I learned courage and to not think so highly of myself.

When you said you like to win (of course you do) but you don't get mad when you aren't the winner - that resonated with me. I've said to myself for years, "I don't have to win but I can't lose." And by that I mean by my very attempt to win (even if I lose) I still tried. I'm not mad the other person did better or "won" (good for them! Awesome!) - I made the attempt and I learned from the experience. That's what I mean when I say, "I can't lose." Thank you for the wisdom through your podcast. signed - US Submarine Veteran

I would love see Jocko Willink and David Goggins appear on a podcast together. I have seen the same suggestion made countless times on other KZbin videos and generally it is motivated by people wanting to see two ‘badasses’ join forces and create epic content. I for one would like to see the two men amicably communicate their differences in objectives, perspectives and experiences. Seeing such opposing members of the SEAL fraternity engaged in such a dialogue would be incredibly insightful and provide many lessons for all interested. I have followed both individuals closely and it is clear that similarity is not what will bring them together, but, after a few years of listening to them engaged in comfortable conversation with individuals who are already inclined to agree with them (whether it be because they are in awe of their very presence and accomplishments or because they are old friends or members of the same circles and/or schools of thought) I feel it would refreshing to see them hold their own against another military man whom they do not see eye to eye with on things. The snippet of Jocko and Leif describing BUDs made it very apparent how far apart one side is from the other. Whilst I do not see it as thinly veiled shot at Goggins as some have interpreted it to be, it is still a telling example of the chasm in attitudes between the two parties. It would be interesting for them to hear them explain and compare their attitudes towards Hell Week, the SEAL teams, combat, leadership and life itself. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIWtlmdmoaeYrpY - Jocko and Leif on BUDs

@chadnielsen2474
@chadnielsen2474 4 жыл бұрын
I thought about these points you mentioned and my impression is that the gap is less about attitude and more about their defining life experiences. Goggins did not have much war experience due to his heart surgery and recovery. He spent much of his Navy service as a recruiter. He discusses some of it in his book. Jocko’s defining experiences were in the Iraq War, which made BUD/S easy in comparison. Goggins reflects in his book and on the JRE podcast about his personality not fitting very well in the SEAL team fraternity since he’s so introverted and was not interested in the social dynamics of the team relationship building. This probably hurt his acceptance by some other SEALs.

It has something to do with your ego. The same reason you are chasing something in order to make you humble, is what is preventing you from being humble. We only know if we are good at something in comparison with someone. There has to be a reference in order to determine whether something is good or bad. And if you are comparing yourself with someone, that will prevent you from being humble. And the reason you want to be humble is to be better than someone. You would've being proud for being humble and that would send you to go around in a circle. It's not you who will determine whether you are humble or not. Because when you are humble, the "title" does not matter to you. Being humble is a consequence of having a "low ego". (If that makes sense)
