I have to delete instagram, and stay off KZbin cuz sometimes, no matter what, my brain will still compare. Even while being inspired. I need to tune out all the people that are miles and miles ahead of me in there career and only focus on me. Which is still very very much a beginner. My mental health plays a huge role in staying productive with film. It’s sometimes super rough and I don’t make anything for months. I still work honestly for free on my own time trying to build up some sort of amount of good work. When your alone and not on a production as a PA or whatever, it gets tough. I admire the persistence KZbinrs like yourself have. Idk how to be still and calm , spending much of the day alone in a room, trying to convince urself it’s gonna work out. Something I’m still trying to break through, and finally upload some work.

I feel the same way. I haven’t created anything in months besides a few free projects I worked on. But no personal films. Sometimes it feels like my circumstances get in the way too where I can’t even create the ideas I have in mind. And being on social media and KZbin makes me judge myself and my productivity

Thank you for this. It’s very easy to look to the future and feel uncertain, while completely forgetting about all the milestones you’ve already surpassed. It’s a never ending battle

@@carlostigs I’d be interested in hearing your input regarding a formal college degree vs self taught. Currently in Film school but I didn’t begin school until I’ve already had 3 years of professional experience and it honestly feels like the things being taught in schools is like 20 years behind what’s actually taking place in the real world. Even with that, I’m hesitant to leave school as I feel like it’ll make many doors easier to open if i just have that piece of paper, but is the financial and opportunity cost of being in school truly worth it?

After sitting down for a minute and thinking about how I would feel about myself, I initially thought that I hadn't achieved anything. I am by far not in a position I thought I'd be, I haven't been able to put as much time as I wanted to in personal projects and I still keep saying "soon". But then I dug a little deeper. I asked myself "Why is it that I am not there yet? What is holding me up?" shortly after I realized. I finished my Bachelors degree. I started a Master's Degree. I got promoted. I literally work as a filmmaker part-time, employed at an agency. Sure, I may not be working on my private goals as much as I'd like to, yet I still make new and valuable experiences each and every day. This really put things into perspective and I think we are oftentimes blind to see just exactly where we are in life and what we have become. Too close to see the bigger picture. Thank you for helping people take a step back and realize just what they have become.

This is definitely a long journey-sometimes I get caught up thinking I’m still at the starting line every time I see other filmmakers and their success. But I am grateful I’ve had opportunities to create, learn from and grow as a cinematographer.

This video came at a good time, thanks Gian Carlo. Especially as someone that suffers from, chronic depression and adhd, it’s tough to avoid distractions, procrastination and negative self talk. It’s a daily struggle. It was great to finally meet you at Danny’s premiere on our road trip. Your growth on KZbin has been awesome. Cheers mate!

It's funny and relieving at the same time, that almost anyone who took this "path" face the same thoughts, struggles, anxieties, etc. even beyond their jobs.. Very grateful to have you pointing out some of these topics in addition to your cinematography videos :) Thank you and keep on going!

Bumped at your channel tonight and stayed for hours, even If I have A shooting tomorrow, your story is amazing! The things you accomplished, especially the part talking about comparing! When I compare myself from 2 year, or even last year to today, becoming one of the most wanted filmmakers in my country, its amazing! I will keep watching you. So inspiring! Thanks!

Hey man, thanks for this - was really inspiring. I'm currently at a level where I'm DP'ing a lot of short films and to be honest I wish I could do that full time, but basically none of them pay as there's little to no money in them as they're peoples passion projects. I'm wondering how you found a route to paid work, such as commercial shoots - as my portfolio is only narrative I find it hard to get agencies to look at me!
