However, when a bout of self-doubt creeps in and we slow down on our productivity…
…The only way to truly stay motivated to make music is to find somebody who’s still surging with motivation.
How To Stay Motivated To Make Music: Hiking The Mountain
Imagine your musical development like a hiking a mountain.
The goal of reaching the mountain’s summit that you’ve been wanting to do for a long time and you view others who have achieved it with a healthy dose of respect.
At some point, you decide YOU’RE going to climb the mountain yourself, and prove once and for all you’re just as good as anyone else.
If you decide to do it alone, while the first hour or so might be enjoyable and you’re thankful you decided to not invite anyone…
…As the afternoon sun starts to get at its peak, you start sweating, you might get confused if you’re off the trail, and you might tell yourself it’s time to take a break.
Once you sit down you begin to feel like your leg aches, you’re thinking about your bed and air conditioning back home, and even though you’ve only been traveling for around a hour…
You’re already starting to convince yourself that this entire hike thing was a bad idea.
“Who hikes by themselves, anyway? Serial killers burying dead bodies in the woods, that’s who”
So you convince your self this was all a waste of time and start walking back down towards the rest of civilization.
Music Career Motivation With A Team
NOW on the flip side, if you take somebody with you… especially someone who’s equally motivated to climb the mountain…
That first hour will whiz by like it’s nothing, and as the morning sun starts hitting…
You might still take a break, but this time you have to agree with your hiking partner.
They might tell you, “I’m actually not that tired yet… let’s go for like another 30 minutes”.
In those situations, what do we all do?
We ALL say, “F it, alright okay let’s keep going”.
Truth be told, half of the time we just say that to protect our egos. We are JUST as tired and hot as we would have been on our own…
…But having somebody else hiking right there with you, you end up wanting to “save face” and you keep hiking.
Another 30 minutes passes, and it seems like your buddy isn’t even WINDED yet.
At first, you don’t say anything and just keep looking at this cat like, “Doesn’t he notice that’s been past 30 minutes? Does this dude ever get tired? WTF!”
But again, you keep walking because you don’t want to look stupid in front of this person…
…PLUS it was your idea to go to the summit of the mountain in the first place!
Another 30 minutes passes with your hiking homey rambling on about God knows what after TWO straight hours of walking…
Already TWICE of what you would’ve done on your own…
You can’t take it anymore.
“BRO! We gotta stop and take a break. It’s been like two hours non-stop, the sun is beating, I need some water. Don’t you ever get tired?”
Your homey stops.
He doesn’t say anything, just stares blankly.
You feel the tension in the air.
He turns his head and looks up to the right.
“WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?! Let’s sit DOWN!”
He raises an arm and points up to the summit of the mountain.
“Top of the mountain’s just five more minutes walk, man. We’re here. Chill out bro.”
You look up and sure enough it’s right there.
Damn.
You walk five more minutes and you’ve reached the destination you’ve been waiting for this whole time.

Drew, you hit this right on the head. Staying a homebody has been a BIG motivation killer for me. I find that I can be motivated af after getting a good night's rest, waking up in the morning (or middle of the night sometimes) to write multiple verses. As the day continues on, however, my motivation starts slipping, and I find myself writing more slowly, getting stifled, easily distracted by social media, etc. Getting out there and taking the journey with friends who have similar working patterns is something I must do more of.

Thanks for writing motivation. I felt lack of motivation for a month, because i researched and studied the topics i want to teach to listeners and it needs more hard work. Now i practiced my voice and flow by rapping to popular lyric videos and that made me joyful about music again seeing how great voice i have and how great beats are available, Thank God. I use NoFap Powers to have masculine and very energetic strong voice. I make one song about Workout which promotes Quitting porn and another one about Gossip and Slander which originate from the Bible too: "Guard your tongue from evil and lips from speaking deceit" And this topic goes very deep and needs lots of studying. I suffer from depression and PTSD so it’s hard to get out of bed some days as it is but a huge factor in what’s keeping me unmotivated is the feeling that I started rapping at age 8 and I’m now almost 32 years old and still trying to become a household name. I'll be honest I don't think in my whole year of writing and practicing I haven't not struggled. Every time I try to write something down it doesn't work when I sound it out and I get frustrated so I just quit now. It's really hard to find friends in my area that like to rap so I stick to myself like all the tims. I tried using online forums to see if anyone could give me feedback on my work but all I got was their own self-promotion of their finished work. I haven't even finished a song! I've been trying to make anything catchy or good enough to even record but I don't like how my voice sounds, I feel off-beat, flat, whatever, I need help. I struggle with every aspect of this but I can't find anyone that motivates me to continue. These videos are helpful, but most require solutions that just don't seem to work for me. If you could see my history you'd see I go back and forth to the same videos so I can write notes and go back to understand it all but maybe not everyone is cut out for this even if they try to work hard?

I was doing tours, shows, i was in the local news paper, i put out albums, soooo many professional music videos, radio interviews, i was rapping for 15 years, i came to the realization that the chances of making enough money to survive off of my music was very very slim, i was addicted to attention, likes and views and it controlled my life, i dropped out of highschool, i let myself get into debt, spent a lot of time in jail, and i invested every dollar i made for 10 years into my music. i completely broke myself and fucked my life up chasing a dream. At 31, i quit, deleted all my social media and focused on my REAL life, not this fantasy life i created. the biggest struggle for me right now is figuring out what career path to take, im a supervisor at a fast food chain. but on ONE YEAR i have got myself out of debt, bought my first car with cash. but im still LOST, i have no clue where to go from here and how to become successful in another field, all i have ever learned or focused on was rap. now i dont even enjoy writing. Dont waste time money and energy on a dream, its okay to dream and chase a dream but dont let it make life changing decisions that effect your real life. a dream is a dream.
