How To Stay Motivated to Produce Music

In this video I discuss what helps me stay motivated and I summarise it into 3 simple points. This video focuses on music production but can be applied to almost anything in life. What motivates you?
1) Find something or someone who motivates you, for me this is usually another artist or creator.
When I'm trying to motivate myself to practice guitar, I listen to John Mayer or go to "Paul Davids" on KZbin. Hearing the beautiful guitar work or seeing an inspiring personality helps me keep working to achieve my goals.
( Paul's Channel is linked here for anyone who is interested / @pauldavids )
2) Look back at your previous completed projects/videos/songs and look at the growth you are experiencing over time. Think about how much more you will know or achieve in the next year? In the last year I know that I have made a lot of progress as a musician, video creator, film maker etc but day to day I can feel like I'm not making a lot of progress at all. Remind yourself of how far you've come :)
3) Remind yourself why you are doing it. Make sure you have a clear reason behind what you are doing. When you remind yourself why you are doing something, it will help you stay focused and motivated.

Sry you don't have to tell me to make music. I do atleast 3 hours session every day and on weekend 8-10 hours straight. But I still suck after 2 years.I often hate myself for not having a mix like the professionals.I give everything to finish a project after 17 hours and then i dont even get 1 like. This can be destroying but i keep doing it because i love it!

Not everybody that likes a video/audio will click 'like'. I often don't when I'm browsing KZbin, and it's usually because 1. I don't think of it, and 2. there's another video I want to watch RIGHT NOW! The other side of that is I very rarely give a thumbs-down for much the same reasons. I'm an aging rocker, and much of the more 'modern' music just doesn't trip my trigger. That doesn't mean that I automatically don't like something simply because it's not what I call rock and roll. It just means that it's not my style. I still appreciate the skills necessary to create a piece, and the efforts that go into putting the various sounds together into a cohesive mix. Rhythm, rhyme and harmony are what do it for me, personally, even more than the genre. I visited your channel, and there is nothing there besides your motivational and reference tracks. Kinda hard to like what isn't there. Maybe put some of your work online so it can be experienced by others. Finally, keep this in mind: Fear of failure is super-common. However, if you don't even try, then you fail by default. What others think should never define you to yourself, but rather show you places where you might need to revise something, or perhaps need to learn something, or even show you where something might not fit just right. Most of all, keep trying.

Thanks for this. Some years back, I was diagnosed with reactive depression and so motivation for anything can be hard to find. I trained as a psychologist, so I decided to 'Premack' myself for one current project (writing some teaching text stuff for my old university)... but that didn't work. In the end, I had to go full on behavioural activation ... with a fixed ratio positive reinforcement schedule and immediate delivery of the actual reinforcer (one small glass of beer/cider per 150 sensible/relevant words written). In one evening and one afternoon, I got almost 1000 words into about 5000 to 7000 words of text aimed at teaching 2nd-year postgrads about mental health issues in the lives of autistic people (my main professional specialism). It was very important to have an _external_ motivator to start me off. I can rethink the FR value at some point and I can choose what subsection I work on to vary the focus of the content. I was very interested in watching this video and it was good to see someone advocating external motivators. Take care, man, and thanks for sharing what you do.

I can fully relate to this one as well. Idk if it's because of how my brain operates coupled w the mental illnesses I have, or if it's because I don't have enough experience to do it yet. But whatever it is, I hope to figure this out soon. I would really love to get started w this. Let me know if you've found anything that helps.

I think i've found a solution, its not music theory (you allready know all of that) its about music "emotion" theory if you may call it so.. also begin anew; 1. Mentality is important to not to stress yurself guys, listen to free audiobook in youtube "the art of not giving a F#ck" its gonna give you the patience to get through this. 2: make your own learning plan and in structure; begin anew learning music theory, but now for the purpose of just exercisin making melodies "unanbiguously". 3: make your own "emotional" chord book; where you play chords and write down your own emotions towards it, this is going to give you your own artistic perspective on music, and thus your own style 4: make the next learning plan when you feel you've acomplished making music unanbiguously (it means that the notes you play does'nt have multiple interpretations). also make deadlines to make sure you work on this... for example for each of theese points take 1 to 3 weeks to complete and engrain each point that i wrote down here. and now you'll be better att making music just how you wanted to translate it. Remember that music is not about doing things because its the popular genre... music is about expressing YOUR emootions (i call it mood because it is easier for me to notice the mood im in and go from there). Have a nice learning proces guys!

Playing/learning/making music etc, Is very beneficial. It forces you to use your frontal lobe, which will improve cognitive function over time, thus making you smarter. Able to solve problems. Try to keep things in perspective. It’s practice over perfection. For there is always something to learn, skills to improve. Levels to climbed. Keep climbing 🧗‍♂️. Open your soul. Thanks in the mix, you helped me realise ^ :)

I tend to be my own worst critique and either save it in that "Garbage" folder in the darkest corner of my hard drive to mess with at a later time, or I'll listen back to whatever it is that I've made and think, "Bro, nobody would listen to this." and delete the entire creation no matter how much time and effort I've already put into it. I've been bad about doing this since I first got FL Studio when I was 13. So, I'm sitting on gobs of stuff I'll most likely never let see the light of day.

Something that makes me fed up is to see these beatmakers boasting because they made a beat in 10 minutes and still getting success

My "why" is that I love to see and be able to create beautiful things and see how far I can go even if I'm creating something simple or more complex (for art in general, not only music), it's joyfull for me and brings happiness to my life and potentially to people who watchs my content and listens my music. It's something fun that I enjoy to do, to learn, to create, to be inspired and I think art saves lifes. ♥ For me it's like playing, for example, when I'm painting, I see the colors, the brushes, the paper and it amazes me alot! (Then FL Studio has a brush, LOL! I felt like a happy kid when I saw this! I know, silly). 😹

Mike, it's harder for me to grasp the concept having that A.D.D crap- I get irritated rather quickly but I just take breaks when that happens, because you're right-music is fun- I had this issue today where I am working on this beautiful melody and after getting everything sounding like I wanted-SPAN was telling me I was "clipping" I kept lowering volume all over trying to pinpoint where the "clipping" was located- wondering how it was even possible to clip at such a low volume level of all my instruments and overall volume- I was really mad- but after stepping away, I went into my master bus and went into my EQ and found the issues so I cut the freq's that were giving me the problems! Now i'm taking another break because there is another "issue" I want to overcome and that is the overall volume of my mix before I master it- which would benefit more? volume of -2 or -3? overall for the entire mix? Me I was leaning towards -2 before I master (hope i'm right!)
