Great video and advice. I used to live in Oakland CA so I’m well aware of all these tips already as they apply in most places. Still going to China was a very humbling experience for me.

Good suggestions. Most are quite practical and reasonable when traveling abroad, not only for China.
@davidalexanderarnavat3 ай бұрын
Generally good advice. Surprised that you have to avoid answering questions when directly asked. Except for the 3 T's at work, I'd answer honestly (not in a bad way) anything I was asked when I lived there. If you can't even do that now, then things have definitely gotten worse.

Much of your advice would also apply to Chinese or other foreigners visiting America
@chopsticksandtrains3 ай бұрын
Yes, and not only America, but most countries around the world. Some of these are very China-specific though.

A good summation of the advice I have gleaned from general travel tips in foreign countries. Political discussions have always been a top topic to avoid. The reactions to denigration of anything Chinese has gotten much, much stronger in recent years with the rise of nationalism. In general, I have found the Chinese very easy to get along with, but I always avoid those topics like the plague. Still, I have had an occasional case where a person blew up on me for referring to someone from the mainland as being from the mainland. Just out of curiosity, how would you phrase that?
@chopsticksandtrains3 ай бұрын
100%! I don't usually need to use that word but in situations where I do I just refer to the mainland as 大陆 (dà lù). But yeah, all it takes is one little bitty thing that you say totally innocently with zero malintent to spark an intense reaction.
@DancingShiva7883 ай бұрын
@chopsticksandtrains It's the wrong word to the wrong ear. I always back off because it's not critical to me, but I'm just interested in how I might be less controversial. I will try your alternative.
@chopsticksandtrains3 ай бұрын
@@DancingShiva788 Oh... I got ya. Yeah, I typically just leave that specification out, but hey, sometimes for communication's sake, you need it! I mean the fact is, the mainland is the mainland. But due to their sensitivity on the Taiwan issue they can easily think you're making a political statement when in fact you probably aren't. But yeah, I hear you. Can be tricky at times. I mean, if you say, "I traveled in Taiwan for a week and then came back to the mainland," they technically have no reason to get upset - but some surely still will, I suppose.
@DancingShiva7883 ай бұрын
@chopsticksandtrains Exactly my experience, they took my engagement to a Shanghai woman, and referring to her as a mainlander as a rousing endorsement of separatism which it wasn't.

Practical and useful tips, thanks for sharing. _Shirtless tattooed guys_ in several places in the world belong to an outlaw tribe/gang, the more tattoos they have, the more they did... E.g. a tear drop in US prisons often means they _dispatched_ someone for the gang 😅

Nothing really unique and specifically Chinese bar 8 and 9. Problem with 1 is the lack of people speaking/understanding English. The rest can apply to any country.
@chopsticksandtrains3 ай бұрын
Well, perhaps - but it varies in terms of degree. One example: Talking politics in many countries can land you in arguments, etc. So it's better avoided. However, talking politics in China can land you in a much worse situation than that. So, this list, while applicable to varying degrees to most places (because a lot of it is common sense stuff), it is designed to maximize usefulness and effectiveness in China.

Criticising about the road,traffic and stopping jumping in line is totally ok in china lol.The only top suggestion is avoiding political questions,just say something like "I didn't really considerate it so I can't answer".Every chinese knows China is a authority country,but some nationalists want to give you a hard time😂😂.

What about talking about the Bible in China? That's my question anyway.
@DavidisDawei3 ай бұрын
I've never had a problem talking about the Bible. I volunteered at the YMCA and Even attended Mass in Guangzhou. I have spoken about "sensitive" issues PRIVATELY, like Tiananmen Square, but this is very risky in public. My Chinese friends are my primary concern and will avoid putting them at risk. If you stood on the corner talking about the Bible (in China) and you attract a crowd, then you will probably find trouble.

@@williamedwardhackman4695 David's answer was spot on... just keep it low key and more on a one-on-one with people you know. I know one of the main responsibilities of Christians is to spread the word and proselytize, to be a 'fisher of men' - and you definitely don't want to try that in China.
