Sorry to hear about your experience.. My girlfriend (white french) and I (korean american) traveled to india/pakistan last year. We did everything ourselves with no tour and only ate and hang around local places. Surprisingly we weren't harassed much. I think you are right. If you are a white female solo traveling, you will probably get harassed more. We did get approached everyday but they leave us after we tell them to f*ck off. We don't really blame the individual people harassing us but the shit system and education these people grew up with. Because to be honest we went to wealthy areas in new delhi and it was the exact opposite. people were very kind and no one was bothering you. No one staring, no one trying to sell you stuff. It just tells you the significant discrepancies in a population. I just hope things improve in india so that future tourists don't deal with such pain. I also heavily blame your tour guides. I can't believe they took you too areas where you would get harassed more. That is a terrible red flag... Next time, check out northern india like srinagar and ladakh! It is very beautiful and people are kind. And pakistan! We loved it there so much. Although parts of lahore and karachi you might face similar issue. Thank you for sharing your experience and being honest! I think more people need to share their experience so they are prepared before going.

Unfortunately in Goa , there are so many domestic tourists , the local Goan men would not do this , this behavior would be Domestic Indian tourists , who tend to travel in packs . again im really impressed with this discussion as it needs to be addressed . i hope that you have taken time to decompress form this trip . we need to see the world for what it really is , and discussions need to be had and explored Kind regards Greta

Thank you for pointing this out as an outsider, as within India we are called "racists" for pointing this out. North West India has a terrible gender ratio, which is ultimately leading to these issues. Southern and Eastern states are noticeably safer. Yeah, not quite paradise like the West, but nowhere close to what happens in the North Western parts. And most of the rapey crowds in the South Eastern states are those from the North Western parts. North West India has a major socio-cultural problems and no government wants to address it as that is where majority of political power lies.

My heart raced when you said you have to make a run for it when the pack surrounded you ( which is when the groping starts). For anyone who wanted to visit India, please please do barricade you door at night. My friend visited India after college with 2 other guys. Her door was broken into by two men and she was terrified. She cried and screamed, luckily her friends heard it and chased those two away. We suspected the hotel is fully aware and even in collusion because those two men were clearly using a key and the hotel responded and said it's just a misunderstanding.

Our guide was fantastic but I stuck to him like glue as the 1 day I had on my own I felt very unsafe. Thankfully we had about 15 in our group so we were never really alone during the tour. The only reason I wanted to go India was to see the Taj Mahal but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Without any proof, without a small video clip, without any police complaint, this woman told some horrible things about India and people started believing them. Yes, I agree that women are not so safe in India but I don't think that such bad things happen to foreigners at tourist sites like goa, jaipur and udaipur. If it were so, then millions of tourists would not come to India from western countries. And despite such a horrible thing happening, this woman, her tourist guide, her tourist company did not even file a complaint with the police. This seems very strange. I agree that she is a good woman but it is very difficult to believe her these horrible words about india.

Thank you for sharing this as it will help other women. A girl from my city was r*ped when she visited India. While going to the hospital and while reporting it there were men taking selfies with her. And men even now found her and send her lots of dms with disgusting comments, so I do understand you, it is truly terrifying. I'm very sorry this happened to you, very disgusted, and, thank you for sharing for other women to see they are not alone. Also, I heard many horror stories especially during holi festivity, but in general every girl going there had a horrible time and had terrifying experiences with drivers and hotel people even. Thanks for sharing this Phoebe, so glad you are okay. I am British - half Indian, half English. I refuse to travel to India. The harassment I've gotten in the UK from Indian men alone since I was a literal child is enough to put me off. Sure, I sound dramatic and self obsessed but my experience of it has been no joke and I can't bear to romanticise a country that generally has such poor respect for women's safety. My grandparents had homes in Mumbai and Goa and they'd spend half the year out there, the only way you could tempt me to visit my heritage is if I were with an army of male family members! I was away in a completely different destination recently when some men harassed me for photos whilst I was watching the sunset. Ruined an otherwise totally perfect moment. The touching, and the way NO is not enough is just unbearable and my skin crawls for you. Love your solo travel content which is always awe-inspiring. 💛

While guys in India, and traveling in India in general, can be intense, it sounds like you had really bad luck! I solo traveled all over India for 3 months (booked my own trains, buses, hotels/hostels) and I didn't really have any issues. I also met lots of other girls who solo traveled India and loved it! Also whenever I had guys be annoying, other random guys on the street would get them to leave me alone. So yes - India is intense, but not every solo female traveler has a bad experience there. I'll definitely return to India again (even solo) to explore more places. And hopefully if you go back you'll have a better experience! ❤

Even as a man, I have had multiple experiences in other countries trying to rip me off and take advantage of my lack of knowledge of their language and/or legal system, especially when they thought I was alone. In general this seemed to get worse in smaller cities. FYI I saw a woman Korean KZbinr being sexually harassed overseas and she started an instagram livestream, which seemed to help her and discourage the perpetrators. Please don’t let them stop you from posting your videos. They’re awesome. When my sister and niece came to visit from America, I took them to Bukchon The Art and we bought some pastels like you did. They loved them. Got them signed too. 🙂

Sorry for your experience Phoebe. I am an Indian guy living in Australia. I am really upset and sad with the experiences you had in India but happy that you met people like Anand. I always felt that certain percentage of us Indian men are a big problem for the reputation of our country and it is our sole responsibility to fix that. l always liked your content. Your NZ videos were amazing and helped me a lot to plan a trip to NZ with my lovely wife. I really liked your Kerala videos and I hope you liked Kerala. It is one state in India that gives India a Very Good reputation. But I hope you will visit India again and have a good experience.

Phoebe I am so sorry to hear about your bad experience in India. Glad at the end you are ok. The most important. If you’re thinking of travelling to Asia again, you can consider visiting China. Rich in culture/ history as well as friendly/nice people. It’s very safe too as a solo traveler no matter if it’s day or night. Anyway, have a good rest back home and you take care. Cheers from Macau, China.

So Indian men haven’t changed, I see 😢 It sounds similar to what I went through in 1984 when I was in my 20s. I was actually on a group tour, so I had Aussies and NZers around me. However, Indian men still tried to invite themselves into my room, and stared at me everywhere I went. No mobile phone cameras in those days, thankfully.

As an Indian, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this video. As someone who comes from the Himalayan part of India, which is much more civilized and peaceful than any part of mainland India, I find it extremely suffocating to travel to places like Delhi. Not only are the people extremely dishonest, but the place is equally disgusting and filthy. You can't trust anyone here. Even the people you've paid will be dishonest and always want more money. A woman from the US was scammed in Jaipur for fake jewelry, and when she came back, they refused to even recognize her. The same filth is being imposed on the good parts of India, like mine. At least you have the option to leave, but unfortunately, I'm not so lucky. Most foreign KZbinrs who come to India try to paint a very false and rosy picture of this hellhole just for views and subscribers, misleading people in many ways. Don't focus on negative comments. The truth can't be hidden in this age of social media, so make sure that your message is received by the public the way you intend.

Hi I'm andon from Sydney, I've heard about woman travelling alone in India being harrassed. I wish the Indian government would educate the men on how to treat tourists with respect. I mean were talking about tourism dollars, if the Indian government spent more time educating men and protecting tourists, India would be in much financial better shape, plus more importantly safety for tourists. Unfortunately the Indian government don't care about international tourism especially the safety aspect
