For winter camping, I carry a Nalgene bottle and an old oversize wool sock. I put boiling water in the bottle, then the bottle in the sock. That goes in the bottom of my bag or the toe box of my quilt. I only need that on the coldest nights…

OK... you've GOT to try the water baby instead. I swear you'll never go back to a Nalgene.

1) Clothing draped over body, but under quilt/sleeping-bag is generally warmer than worn clothing. 2) Socks are an exception. Wear dry socks. 3) Keep head warm (hood, balaclava, etc.). 4) A bivy is warmer per weight than a sleeping-bag liner. 5) Eat before bed. Eat fat if possible (chips, pemican, etc.). 6) Sponge-bath or wet-cloth wash before bed. Clean is warmer than dirty/sweaty. 7) Wear gloves to bed if it's really cold. Most forget this important warmth-layer in bed. 8) Don't wear anything that could make you sweat in the middle of the night. No rain-gear, no tarps, no emergency mylar unless you plan to stay awake to prevent sweating.

@@WildernessGrandpa The algorithm is a weird deal, just keep it coming, especially gear oriented stuff and the viewers will build up. 👍

Thx so much for your vids & all the info. I’ve been wanting to get into backpacking as I really enjoy day hikes but I want to go about it safely and stay as comfortable as possible lol.

Your sleeping pad really should be insulated in some manner, not just a cushion of air.

That's what I like about mine. R4.7, so provides plenty of warmth
