For me it was a sublocation contract as I was a poor student and he did not have a lot of money, he rent a room to me so he can pay for his appartement and we shared the common room (and fridge). It was in Germany and there is nothing wrong nor even special about it. Also, it was the best roommate I ever had, he was nice, funny and teach me a lot of stuff in geology and electronic soooo... For triangle shaped sandwiches, I have experience so I know what to do.
